I got Scammed into a Gym Membership. How do I CANCEL it?

I used to work for a top national gym, and there are a few ways to cancel contracted memberships.  The gym’s rules I used to work for are pretty standard across most all gyms, partly because of state and federal laws.  The cancellation policies I’m about to outline also apply to personal training memberships.

Here’s the run down:

1) Move somewhere that is 25 miles away from the health club.  You will have to submit proof.  I hate to be a bad boy, but if moving is not an option, submit false documentation.  If you do this, don’t feel bad.  Remember, they lied to you and screwed you into a membership.  If they figure out that your documentation is false, don’t worry, they can’t do anything.
2) You have a medical condition in which a doctor will not allow you to work out for at least 6 months.  In this scenario, you can easily talk to your doc, and get him to sign-off on something.  "Severe Migraines" really seem to do the trick.  Plus you’re doctor will like giving you prescriptions because he gets commission over-rides.

3) Start a problem at the gym.  This tactic works the absolute best!  If you piss off the club bad enough, they will kick you out.  In this case, they can not legally obligate you to the agreement.  If they keep billing you, then get an attorney, and they will begin paying you in court case earnings for their illegal billing procedure.

Don’t do the Following:

- Try to cancel your credit card.  Since gym memberships are legally binding contracts, cancelling your credit card to get out of paying will not work because, they have the legal right to collect on their money.  And that’s exactly what they will do.  Bally’s was very well known for doing this back in the ninety’s.  This means a lower credit score.  Ouch!

I hope this helps.
