Back at it with full steam –Rippetoe style

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I have only hit legs once in the last two weeks the night I scored a leg press/hack squat machine for fifty bucks. Had to try it out. I threw my back out a few days later standing up and have been nursing it back to health with rest. I am not fully back though impatient to wait any longer. I have decided to try and add some more mass and decided to try Rippetoe for a change up. I did workout A with squats, BP and deads and dips tonight. Loved it. Went ATG!!!!!!!!!! tonight deeper than ever and really felt it. The knees are just fine. I love it.  Fun to get back at it. New stereo in the garage (old one from inside- though beats what I had). The weather is cooler so not an oven. I am happy as can be to have been able to hit it tonight. Bummer is lecture to 90 people on thurs and call friday so if not able to workout wednesday secondary to preparing for lecture, may have to wait until thurs afternoon after my lecture or Sat. Oh well each workout is a gift. Take care.

HIT Cardio with weights

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

I was post call today and took one of my sons to tennis. Did the trade off with my wife for the other two boys to have their tennis lessons and then went home and snuck in a workout. Second time doing this HIT cardio with weights  from M and F. I did two cycles a minute on each set- push ups 40 and then 31, walking DB lunges with 15s for 28 lunges each set, 10 lb plate choppers 15 each side each set, and then clean and press 55 lbs for 18 then 15 on the second set. Wow! Felt great. Added to everything a little this time.

Off to Colorado Springs tomorrow for a four day conference. Hope the resort has a gym so that I don’t miss the time away. Hate to leave the family after 4 out of 7 nights on call this last week. I hit 130 hrs this week and still worked out four times full body ( except on the weekend call I split the body into two days for time). I am feeling great. Hope to not lose the consistency. The t shirt I am wearing may need to retire for it is a little snug as of late. Bummer!

worked out both days on call!!!!

Sunday, September 7th, 2008

I stole another one today. I finished the second have of the full body workout that I could not finish yesterday for time constraints. I did clean and press, BB curls and narrow bench. Then finished right lat triceps with decline dumbbell extensions to bring up the lateral head. I had a great workout with only one interruption from the ER, though did not have to go in. It felt great to chance it and hit it while on call. Only 14 hrs and 45 minutes left until I have Mon half day.  Will see what I have left tomorrow. Maybe abs, maybe cardio. On call again Tues so need to pace myself. Take care .

Snuck one in on call

Saturday, September 6th, 2008

I got home from making rounds this afternoon and had a 1 1/2 hr window before our kids had a birthday party to go to. I am on the full body workout wagon right now and loving it but could not get the whole body in, in the short time I had. But I hit it anyway. ATG squats for 6 sets and then BP for 5 sets and Vbar pulldowns for 4 sets. Felt good. I lowered the safety catches one more on my squat rack and it felt great to go low.  I quickly showered, and was able to make  most of the party with my kids and wife.  I got a few calls though did not have to go in.  34 1/2 hrs left to go.  Yeah!!  I am trying to make the best of it. When I finish the 3 out of 4 nights I am on call right now I do not have call for over a week. I am trying to look at the bright side. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. Take care.

Unconventional cardio

Monday, September 1st, 2008

The Oct M and F had an article, Iron Clad Cardio.  It was written for me. I do not do a ton of cardio as I lose weight pretty quick if i do- very fast metabolism.  It caught my eye when it spoke of "As far as you’re concerned any time not spent waging war against some kind of resistance is futile."  I did the starter workout consisting of 1 min at each of four exercises for two cycles continuous cycles. Seems easy enough-a toddler way to start. Yikes. I did pushups, then walking lunges, plate woodchop and then clean and jerk. Wow, what a workout. I was still a little sore from my Saturday full body compound workout. I hope to throw this in when I am stressed for time. Tons of call and work and a trip out of town. I do not want to miss a chance at working out. It gave me some ideas for a workout on the road as many of the exercises require little or no equipment which is most hotel gyms.  Take care to all.
