I had bad news last night that my mom had a head CT for headaches and has a brain aneurysm. The news was pretty tough though I was on call so could not absorb it all last night. I did not sleep well though the pager was quiet. I had a half day and it all hit at the end. I used that energy to workout. I still have sore legs though tried deads at 135 to see how they felt and the next thing I knew I was on the fifth set at 225 and decided to add 5 lbs and hit it just fine. I had contemplated skipping deads for the legs. Hope to be able to walk tomorrow. I did pullups, seated rows and DB rows and then narrow bench and db overhead ext for tris. Felt great and feel very pumped. I had an intense workout I suspect on the energy from bad news. I will know more on monday after she has an MRA. Bummer is I am 1100 miles away and on call again monday. Prayers please if you will. Take care.

I did chest and biceps tonight. Jumped to 200 for bench press after hitting 195, 5 by 5 last week. I did 3 sets of 5 and one set of 4 and then 197.5 by 4 to end. Next week, 200 for 5 by 5!!!! Then Incline DB bench with 55 by12, 60 by 10 and 62 1/2 by 10. Then Incline DB FLyes 40 by 12, 42 1/2 by 10 twice. Felt great. Then 6 sets of biceps and can barely type.
On call tomorrow but will hit back and triceps on friday if the hammies will allow after leg day yesterday. DOMS made me walk like a 90 year old man the first half of the day. I hope call does not kill the legs tomorrow. The second day post workout is normally the worst for DOMS for me. Oh well, I had a blast last night. Take care to all and good luck.

I had a hell of a day and then stressful evening with the kids. Yikes not good style. Almost bagged working out and then my wife knowing how much I needed it basically pushed me into the garage to hit it. I did legs/calves. Squats were great. I have missed legs for about 9 days so was leary though the negative energy prompted me to add to my last 5 by 5 ATG squats at 190 and went to 195 5 by 5 relatively easily. I wonder, was it the negative energy channelled right, the new training shoes, (Nike Edge Trainers 08- awesome), the fact that I ditched the squat pad after reading the post on this subject, or just plain old stubborn determination. Hmm? Whatever the case I had a great workout despite a late start of 9:20. I followed squats after two warmup sets and then the 5 by5 with leg curls for three sets and then leg press on the smith machine I went 300 for 12, 320 for 10 and 330 for 12. It felt great. I cannot walk and feel like throwing up so I call it a success. Followed legs with some quick calves as they are already cramping from the 48 hr call weekend.
I hope to be able to walk again by thurs when I am on call again. Take care to all. Thanks to those who read this tired post workout rant.

We had a family get together that I was able to attend despite being on call and some of the family have not seen me for a while. The topic of some of their friends and how much they ate came up and one of my uncles said," if anyone ate like that all the time they’d be as big as Tom". This is the first time any of the family has made comment. Nothing else was said though I was psyched. It was nice to have reference made to my size and for now it is not that I am skinny as it has been most of my life. Happy happy until the pager took me back to the hospital. I cannot wait to hit legs tomorrow. Take care to all.

I am so psyched. I had a pretty easy day so far on call. I took the time this afternoon and risked a workout. I have been called in stat and dripping wet before so a little gun shy. I did shoulders and forearms and had a great time. Feels good.
The other bright spot is that I have figured out the pull up bar. I have shelves just above my head that go around my garage that are rated at 1000 lbs per linear foot. There is a gap for the exterior door in a corner with 45 degree angles on either shelf on each side of the door. It is perfect to put either of my ez curl bars up and do pull ups. I am going to come up with some way to fasten and unfasten the bar for pullups. It was awesome. Very stable and I can do them with the legs straight and not be bothered by the tag on the lat pull down storage hooks on my Smith machine that read "do not use for pull ups’". Thannks to Bando who wrote that he used an old barbell for pull ups. It works great and was free.
Take care to all. Still on call through mon am so may just do some cardio tomorrow. Depends on if the night is a wild one or night. I can never guess. Typically if the day is mellow, when my head hits the pillow the pager starts to go off and off and off.

Had a great afternoon with the family post call. We went and all the boys and I got haircuts and then shopping at a new Sports store in town. I got new Nike Edge Trainers 08 and the boys all got new crocs for summer. Weights are 79 cents per pound right now. I just bought 55, 60, and 65 pound dbs for the same on special. I resisted the urge to get the 70’s though was nice to see they had them in stock to 75#.
I had a late start at 8:45 though did 15 sets of chest and 6 of biceps. I hit 195# 5 by 5 today. The fourth set was tough but I used the mind and did the 5th set to just before failure. May stick here for one more week. Depends on the mood next time. I was post call and tired so was pretty excited. The back is still pretty sore from Tuesday but seems to be resolving without any injury. The DOMS was so intenset that I was worried I had hurt something. The pull ups were great. Tried to find a door way pull up bar tonight though was not satisfied. All the stores had the same everlast one that looked limited on grip variations. I will still search.
Thanks for reading. Long winded post call, can’t believe I still worked out mood. Chewing (no joke) on a size up pwo shake right now. Yikes they are thick. Take care.

I have had a tough stretch with work and my four year olds birthday bringing family into town. I took today off for his birthday and stole some time while he napped to workout Inspired by the pull up thread in the O 35 forum I did back including 3sets of 5 pull ups after not having done them forever. I did deads 224 5 by 5 and then 4 sets of BB rows and 3 sets of seated rows. Felt great. Back is definitely tight tonight. I then did narrow bench for 3 sets and wobble bar pressdowns for 3 sets. Triceps after back seems like a good fit, I was fresh for tricep work whereas I don’t think I could have done near as much justice to biceps. It was a blast and good to feel the shirt tighten up again. I have hated this time where inconsistency has been the rule. I have three of the next 5 nights on call so will be somewhat spotty this week as well though after today I don’t think I could do much tomorrow anyway. I will have a half day thursday so hope to hit chest and bis.

Yikes how time flies. I said around 11 days ago, no foreseeable detours. That is the last time I say that. Work, home and a back sprain popped up and the next thing I knew was 10 days without working out left me grumpy. I had a busy day and late night. Was debating crashing versus workout and ended up doing 12 sets of chest and 6 sets of biceps starting at 9:40 pm. I had a great workout. Resumed 5 by 5 on bench and did 192.5, 4sets of 5 and one set of 3. Bummed but there is next time. I last did 190 5 by 5 and maybe should have started there but said what the heck. I feel pretty pumped up about now and glad to be back just in time for family coming into town for my little ones 4th birthday. I hope to get back to consistent.

I had a great workout tonight after having a rough 29 hr day. I got in at 1:30 last night and called again at 2:30 and then a 7 am meeting so I was pretty wiped. I got to have lunch with my youngest and wife and then picked up my two oldest from school and went to Great Grandpa’s to mow his lawn as he just had knee surgery. The boys had a blast visiting with their grandparents and I got some sun and exercise mowing a pretty good size lawn. Gma baked a pumpkin pie for my efforts, didn’t have the heart to tell her I would likely not have any. If I am going to cheat it needs to be caramel.
I did 9 sets of bis and 9 of tris and 6 of forearms. It felt great. I got my new dumbells so was nice to do DB overhead extensions without having to smack plate mates all over my 50’s. I now have up to 65 pound pairs and cannot wait for chest day to push the IDB bench further. I will likely soon go to the plate mates on the 65s though will order a few more pair soon. I am having a great time with 5 by 5 making steady progress. Almost felt like I was overtraining this week and probably was with three nights on call out of the last 7. I am pretty wiped. Off this weekend and cannot wait to not have a pager attached to the hip.
