A Heart Healthy Christmas Idea
It's the time of year when I am often asked by guys in the gym for Christmas ideas for their significant others. A suggestion I like to offer is one that is heart healthy and keeps track of the heart all in one. A Heart Rate Monitor. There are all kinds, some quite techno that not only track heart rate but calories, can monitor exercise progress, and more. Most consist of two parts; a transmission belt stapped around the chest, some training bras have a pocket that holds the transmission piece, and a receiver on the wrist, namely a watch. The belt uses an electromagnetic field to relay the heart rate signal to the watch which then displays the heart rate in beats per minute. Heart rate Monitors are lightweight, most all are waterproof, and provide a feeling of accomplishment. The price range can be from $25 to $200 but a good one that can do everything most people want runs around $100. Now to find the time to get out and do some shopping, that can be difficult to do for busy people and is a good reason to begin early.    Â
I've had the one with the strap. Its advantage IMO was the average HR over the length of the workout. I didn't care for the feeling of the strap, although that was a minor inconvenience. However, somehow the electronics of my treadmill interfered with it.
I have a strapless one now which I like very much. Even though I have to take point in time readings, there is no electronic glitch with it, and because I do interval trainng, I strive to increase the reading during the workout.
