Gym Rebel

Friday, August 24th, 2007

I find it really difficult to understand or trust the so-called medical ‘authorities’. Earlier this week (monday) I had a double epileptic seizure in the gym. It was confusing, really - if anything was going to finish me off I’d have thought it’d be dead lifting or squats. I was using a selectorized seated row machine - that’s all.
Oh well, after I’d been scraped up off the floor (and then had a second seizure) and all the first aid stuff, I was taken home. I saw my doctor the next day who finally (after 7 years) agreed that I seem to have seizures more during the late afternoon, while exercising. His recommendation was for me to stop exercising altogether.

Hang on - aren’t we supposed to be encouraging people to be more active? Aren’t there loads of national (and international) campaigns to get people to exercise more, to reduce the chances of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, depression etc etc. If I followed the most recent medical advice given to me, I’d stay sat at this computer - for the rest of my life. Luckily I have no intention of ‘not exercising’. I will continue to use the gym, despite the risk of epilepsy. I’m not prepared to go through life, petrified to do anything, based on the occasional risks that epilepsy presents. I’ll just deal with it. I wish others would!
