Why do we fail to accomplish our weight-loss goals

September 22, 2009

Why do we fail to accomplish our weight-loss and fitness goals?

We live in a fantasy world full of infomercials telling us if you buy our product you will accomplish all your goals in 6 weeks, the Oprah Winfrey show where you see people with miraculous changes to their body, and my favorite the Biggest Loser where contestants are pushed to their limit day after day to win the contest.

The sad fact is that we live in the real world and what you don’t see on TV is that a lot more people fail than succeed when they go on these weight-loss endeavors. The average person doesn’t have a personal trainer at their house, a dietitian, and a chef to prepare all of our meals. So why do we usually fail?

1.       Unrealistic expectations; So often we think that we can lose ridicules amounts of weight in a very short period of time and when it doesn’t happen people get discouraged and end up quitting. To lose 1 pound of body fat you have to burn 3500 calories in the negative which takes time to do.

2.       Short term fix: another reason people fail is they decide they are going to starve themselves just to try to lose a certain amount of weight by a certain date. This is very unhealthy and can cause lots of mental and physical problems.

3.       Intimidation; so many people are very self conscious about going to a gym for many obvious reasons. Your best chance for success if you have this problem is to either hire a personal trainer or chose a gym that is of high quality that prides its self on customer service,  and helping you to feel comfortable in your exercise environment.

4.       No accountability: One of the reasons that hiring a personal trainer is so important is that you are going to be held accountable to exercise on a regular basis. Inconsistency is a huge factor in the failure of accomplishing our weight-loss and fitness goals. The other reason that having a personal trainer is so important is to make sure that you are doing the right exercise program to accomplish your goals. Nothing is more demoralizing than going to the gym for 3 months and not getting your desired results. A good personal trainer should lay out a blueprint too take you where your at now too where you want to be in 3 to 6 months.

There are many other reasons people don’t accomplish their weight-loss and fitness goals but the key is to look to make a lifestyle change that you can live with the rest of your life. Living a healthy lifestyle is doing a combination of things including exercise, proper diet, drinking plenty of water, learning to deal with stress, and getting plenty of rest. If you do these simple things you can accomplish all your goals.

Welcome!
