Setback #1

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

Well, not even a full week in and I get my first setback.  Had to move some furniture from my brother in law’s and managed to get a hernia.  Its my second in 3 yrs, and at least managed to get it on the side that I didn’t have it on before.  At this rate, I won’t be getting much of anywhere towards my goals.

I’m gonna have to revise the plan for now.  Two doctors visits, one a consult and the other a referal for the consult, in the next week or so.  That means, at least I can work off the weight, even if there won’t be much lifting for me.  For all of you that haven’t had a hernia and subsequent surgery before, thats approximately 5-6 weeks of no significant lifting, ie-5lbs or less.  If you haven’t had a hernia before, mine have both been slow progressing.  Get a good workout in, some tightness and discomfort prolong after your usual tightness from lifting subsides.  Almost feels like some cramping in your lower abs, like you pulled something.  If it doesn’t go away, try pressing on the tightness, and coughing a few times, one at a time, and if you feel something loose that pops in and out, you got yourself a hernia.

Current plan now is to cardio twice a day.  One being biking, the other running.  In about 3-4 weeks, that is going to have to move from 20min intervals to 30-40min and go from biking to running as they do in most triathalons.  I figure, if I can’t lift, at least I’ll lose some weight and stay in cardio shape. Damn hernia.

3 days in…

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Dang.  Gotta say I’m sore.  I tried the morning cardio and afternoon lifting, and after 1 day noticed my body isn’t up for that just yet. I did manage to at least get the lifting in, just no cardio to this point. Tomorrow being Thanksgiving, I’m pulling a two a day cardio session to maintain where I’m at fat count wise.  Friday will be a circuit train with high reps, low weight and saturday cardio with Sunday off.  So far so good.

Just started on the V12 from SAN.  Does give you some pretty good workout energy.  I’ve also cut back meal portion sizes and upped the frequency to about 5 a day.  Its taking some getting used to, but I’ve tried supplimenting the hungry times with Slim Fast Optima bars.  1 at a time, mind you, but they’ve been holding off most hunger cravings.  I wouldn’t be suprised that if after 2-3 weeks like this, I can finally get my stomach shrunken back smaller than my eyes.  Should help out a lot with cutting fat.  Still have a vice with some chips and salsa that I’ve been giving into over the past three days after work, so I’ve got to try and ween off it, otherwise this is gonna backfire on me.

The beginning…

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

At some time soon, I should get a body fat test done to have a baseline set with which to work with.  Having just returned from vacation to sunny San Diego though, it’s as good a time as any to begin my way towards my fitness goals.  I honestly think my lift stats aren’t accurate, but I’ll find out tomorrow.  My main idea is to have a 30min cardio workout first thing in the morning each day this week, then follow up with a mid or late day lift starting with back/bi tomorrow, chest/tri on Tuesday, and legs/abs on Wed with a Thursday workout wherever I feel that I’m a little lacking.  Friday would be two cardio (run/bike), Saturday cardio morning with a little circuit training for full body in the afternoon.  Sunday would be off.  If I don’t feel burned out after that, I’ll continue on the same routine, if not, I’ll cut back to lifting and just make Fridays/Saturdays cardio with Sunday off.

I know the two-a-days may be a bit sadistic to start off with, but its in my personality that if I tell myself I want to do it and let myself come up with excuses not to, then I’ll slowly whittle it back to maybe a workout or two a week.  This shouldn’t be a problem because I’ve done this in the past with CrossCounty in high school where we’d run before school, then usually a 7mi run in the afternoon or on Tues/Thur we had a short 4mi run with some lifting afterwards.  Besides, I’d like to see some descernable results before Christmas and stay ahead of all those with the new years 2 week resolution.
