So I am still at it. Almost to six months of training. I feel like I am making decent progress. I am able to put more weight on the bars and getting some good development. I have a new daughter, she is two months old now, I was worried that I wouldn’t get enough sleep when she was born but that has worked out fine.
I did six weeks of HIIT workouts, aka the Tabata workout. That worked well for me I was trying to cut weight and I went from 199lbs to 178 lbs, and I seemed to maintain muscle while at it. Now I have been working out with heavier weights doing pyramids with 3-4 sets of 4-12 reps. I am not sure what type of work out I will do next. I am thinking about doing a 5×5 or just concentrating on compound heavy lifts. I am still trying to figure out what and how much to eat. I want to try to put on some size but I don’t want to over do it and add a lot of fat to my body. I am back to about 185 lbs now.
The main thing for me now is to keep at training and not get hurt. My lower back doesn’t bother me like it was so I am not wasting money at the chiropractor’s office any more. My left shoulder is still hurting but it mainly bothers me when I am sleeping. I don’t know what I will do to fix that. I don’t want to go to the doctor because I am sure he will tell me lay off the weights for a while, so o-well.

Where to start? I have always liked lifting weights. I remember when I got my first weight bench at a yard sale when I was in middle school. I wanted to get stronger so I could be better at football. Then when I started playing high school football the team would meet 3 nights a week in the off season to lift. I always thought I was strong for being 5′9 and 150 lbs, I can’t remember how much I was lifting, only that it was more than most of the linemen. Then my senior year I really got into body building. At least I thought I was into it. I went to FLEX gym 5-6 days a week and learned a lot more exercises than we ever did for strength training at school. I started reading FLEX magazine and Muscle & Fitness. That was back in 1999. That was probably the longest consecutive time I trained. I didn’t know anything about eating right. My pre-workout meal was creatine and The Beast Spray. Then I got a “real job” as a furniture deliveryman after graduation and that pretty much stopped my training for a good year.
When I got back to training I joined another small gym called “Fitness Zone”. I had changed jobs and was working at the local GIANT food grocery store, I worked nights and weekend so that left me plenty of time to hit the gym during the day. I was doing well for about 6 months, gaining size and strength, learning more about eating right, and taking supps. Then I got a hernia. That sucked. I was out of commission again for at least 6 weeks. I don’t think I got back into the gym after that for another year. That same story keeps repeating itself for the last 10 years. I get in a gym and start to make progress, meet a goal, or get hurt and stop for a year or so before I realize I am totally out of shape. I am trying to stay focused an motivated but there is always an excuse. Now my shoulder and lower back stay sore most of the time but I have made up my mind to work through it. My goal is to keep going for the whole year and see what I can do. I am 1/4 of the way there. God help me!
