More sleep for better workouts

Friday, May 15th, 2009

I was able to sleep more in the last week and that has helped a lot. By the end of last week I was so exhausted from 4-6 hours/night of sleep that I left work early on Friday, went home, and crashed. I slept for 3 hours, got up for dinner, then went to bed for the night. Must have been 10 or 11 hours altogether. And I got about 8 hours Sat night. From Sunday on I got about seven hours a night, which helped make my workouts more productive than they have been in a while. Last night I did shoulders and got the 110s up for *two* sets this time, 8 reps and 9 reps. Last week it was just one set of about 5 reps. So I’m really happy to have broken out of the see-saw pattern that had cursed my gym life.

See-saw workouts

Friday, May 1st, 2009

See my last blog post to understand just how bad my shoulder workout was last week. Two weeks ago I had a great shoulder workout. And I had another great one last night. Good…bad…good…I hate this see-saw ride.

Last night I got the 100s up for DB shoulder presses no problem. I whipped out 10 reps like they were 80s. So I moved up to the 110s for the first time ever. It’s so weird. Last week I couldn’t even get the 100s up into place to start a set.

Crappy workout again

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Workouts have been inconsistent. Some good ones, some bad. Today was bad. Jeremy and I drove out to the Gold’s in Kirkland, just to see what it is like (had never been there). It was a delt and trap workout. Well, it was for Jeremy at least. I barely got in a few reps with the 100s on one set and couldn’t even get them up into position to start the next set. The we moved on to rear-delts, and again it was a struggle. I decided I was just forcing a bad workout out of myself so I stopped. Jeremy finished his workout.

I had an awesome delt/trap workout a week ago, getting the 100s up for three full sets. (Jeremy thinks they were the 105s, but I disagree.) So what gives? Could it be the 4-to-5 hours of sleep per night I got last Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday? Could it be continued work stress?

I really needa different job. I mean, here I am writing this blog entry on a Saturday while taking a break from work. That’s right: I cam home from the non-workout and started working. It’s just not the kind of work-life balance that’s conducive to fitness, let alone balls-to-walls sessions with the iron.

New PR on flat bench DB presses

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Quick post. I slept about 5 hours last night, was exhausted much of the day, and left work with more work to do tonight. But I had committed to a workout with my training partner, Jeremy, so I picked him up and we drove to Gold’s.

Thanks to Jeremy, I went for the 140s a couple of times tonight. I’d only done the 125s at our other gym, Allstar Fitness, because that’s as high as they go there.  But I got the 140s up twice tonight–not huge sets, but good enough.

Now I just need to focus on getting my work done and hope I get more than 5 hours of sleep.
