Big injury = Big set back….

sparkie

So after having the worst cold of my life(over 2 months) and taking time off the gym to get better+eat, I am finally back at the gym full-force when…it happen…my back…. I’ve been injured before, but this one was so bad I am really surprised I didn’t throw up. It happened at work when I was helping this(quite annoying) but quite faint person who had an asthma followed by a panic attack. I called 911 and gave her ventolin and tried to lift her up off the ground and then…… MAJOR TEAR!!!!!! I have given birth before but never experienced a back burn like this.
After 3 days in bed on painkillers, I was worse than ever and went to see a chiropractor. It turns out my injury is much worse than I thought. I was shocked to see how badly my spine shifted, not to mention the muscle tear which doesn’t show on an xray, but the inflammation is quite real.
So, begins 3 months of intensive therapy(3x wk) and NO lower waist workouts(not that I could even if I wanted to) and of course light NO impact cardio. Thank God the clinic I go to specializes in sports therapy and rehab, so I feel I’m in good hands.
I was hoping to begin an intense 8 week transformation plan, but instead, it’s gonna be easy for sparkie-put on the brakes! I must say the hardest part of this is the mental feeling you get from undertraining and from losing muscle, gaining weight, not having the satisfaction of that awesome workout. I mean, I’m using 5lb dumbells for heaven’s sakes!
I hope that I will make it through this with much success and that maybe I will be able to inspire and motivate somebody. In the meantime, I’ll take ANY encouragement from you that I can get!!! Thanks!!!
SAD, SAD, Sparkie!!!!

I’m sorry to hear that! Good luck on your recovery.

I’ve had that back pain, and I know exactly what you are going through. TRUST ME!!!! YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT EASY!!!!!. I was on my back for one week and went absolutely insane during this time but I let myself heal and worked on it slowly. In doing this It had healed faster than it ever had before. So just relax. It may be a week or two out of the gym, but don’t forget you have the rest of the year to work out in the gym.

Ouch. That x-ray makes my back hurt. The recovery will take months but since you were into fitness before the accident your body should be in good shape to heal well. I know setbacks are frustrating.

Sorry to hear about your injury. Back is nothing to take lightly, but some encouragement: Many people have deviated spines (scoliosis) and live with it perfectly fine. In fact over 70% have a little bit of deviation in the spine. So if you had the deviation from before your muscleinjury, it shouldn’t affect you in the long run. The muscle tear can cause you to force your spine in deviation, but with proper rehab you can make a full recovery. Make sure you stay somewhat active, use the elliptical or stairmachine for cardio. Follow your rehab schedual, but don’t just lay on the couch the rest of the time. The back needs movement and gradually "normalization" of your movementpattern. Good luck with your rehab, I have faith in you to do it properly and getting back at an even better level than before! Feel free to ask, and maybe I can help :)

Dam! That’s awful news! Remember though you have to take it easy and not try and get back into action too quick. Not being able to train just stinks but as long as you keep your diet in check you should be alright for a while as far as losing muscle. Rehab and you’ll be back in no time!

  6. Mike Duffy Says:

Sorry to hear about your injury, wishing you all the best with your recovery.

It it makes any difference. I herniated 3 disks in my back in 2005 and had to have surgery. I am now stronger than I have ever been and in better shape than ever. So what I am trying to say is this might be the startng point to get you in the best shape ever. wishing you a speedy recovery and best of luck.

Wow… good luck on the rehab. You will be back in no time. Just take it easy and take it slow. No sense in rushing the whole thing only to go back. Take care and keep us updated.

Sparkie! WTF? Injury is sometimes a part of fitness. Luckily your fitness level will get you back in the game sooner!!! Looks like you have a muscle imbalance right now. That will change soon. Follow your plans strictly and it will come…maybe slowly, but it will be great!!!

  19. chickeneater Says:

go to the library and get "Healing Back Pain" by Dr. John E. Sarno. Your obsession w/ your spine will keep you in pain.

  20. aloha_izzie Says:

Hang in there!! I ha ve experienced some lower back pain from a bulging disk. It’s very scary when you can barely walk. The pain will go away and you will be back in the gym. Stick to your diet and what the doctors tell you to do. Don’t try to do more than your suppose to, it will only hinder your progress.

    Best wishes,
    Isabel

  22. ibrown84 Says:

I’m really sorry to hear this however I know how you feel. I have 3 bulged discs in my lower back and when a chiropractor told me I would never recover at 20 years old I was devastated but with proper forum and intelligence in the gym you’ll work through it. I have to remind myself sometimes not to go too heavy or I’ll really twist myself up. Hang in there!!!

  23. brittafoster Says:

  24. dthiele233 Says:
