Contest Preparation SECRETS: Taking Scheduled Physique Assessment Photos During Your Contest Preparation
Although It May Be Painful At Times To See the Way You Really Look During Your Journey, You Must Take Assessment Photos Every Step Along the Way.
Be sure to take pictures to document the changes and improvements your body experiences during your contest preparation journey. You should take pictures on a regular basis. Weekly physique assessment photos during your last 12 to 20 weeks prior to your show will be tremendously helpful tools as you strive to become your very best.
Sometimes you’ll like what you see in the pictures—and sometimes you will not. These photos will sometimes be rewarding, motivating, constructively critical, a boost to your ego, fun, and mementos that you’ll cherish in the future.
But let me warn you that weekly physique assessment photos can sometimes be depressing, mentally taxing, emotionally draining, inconvenient, and challenge your desire to continue as well. It’s up to you to use the photos and the positive and/or negative feedback to your advantage. The chances are great that you will not always be satisfied with the progress (or lack of progress) your physique assessment photos demonstrate.
It will be very common for you to think that your progress is actually much better than the photos reveal. Pictures, however, do NOT lie. That’s how you really look. It’s your perception that lies. Remember that it’s a lot better to find out what you need to work on 20 weeks before a contest when you can actually do something about it than 20 minutes after your contest when you can’t.
No matter how much of an inconvenience physique assessment photos may be to take, invest the time to follow through and take them anyway. No matter how painful or disappointing they may be to look at, be sure you take them anyway.
Physique assessment photos will help you become the very best you can be when your contest date arrives. And, when you look at the photos a few months after your show, you’ll realize then that you were much too hard on yourself at the time the photos were taken.
Displaying your hard-earned development in the most complimentary manner is very important when you step on stage in front of the judges at contest time. Physique assessment photos are also a good opportunity for you to practice your mandatory poses and show off your physique properly.
Invest in a digital camera with a self-timer. You should also buy a tripod. That way, you will not need to depend on anyone else to take your pictures. Believe me, it will be tough enough to stay motivated to take you own physique assessment shots on a weekly basis. Don’t complicate the process even more by creating the need to coordinate with another person.
Set the camera on the tripod at the same position the judges will be doing their work: Looking up at your physique about 15 to 20 feet away.
You should also take the photos in as close to the exact same setting every time. That way, you can make fair comparisons and better evaluate your progress. If you take your pictures outside, try to take them at the same time of day. How the sun casts shadows on your body will be important to the quality and usefulness of the physique assessment photos.

Just How Mentally and Emotionally Tough Are You?
The difference between a champion and a runner-up competitor is oftentimes the standards they hold themselves to when preparing for a show.
All competitive bodybuilders train with weights but there are many different levels of effort and execution one can produce. Most bodybuilders will do some cardiovascular training when they get ready for a contest but how intensely, effectively, and consistently they do that cardiovascular training will make a huge difference in the quality of their physiques. Every bodybuilder will cut their calories as they strive to get shredded for a show but how much pain they are willing to endure and for how long will vary greatly.
The “wildcard” factor, so to speak, that will determine how good you will be on contest day is how well you align all of the mental and emotional variables in your life. I’m not referring to what you do in the gym, on the recumbent bike, or at the dinner table to get ready for a contest.
The “wildcard” factor I’m referring to is getting your head on straight and thinking clearly throughout the entire contest preparation journey. I call this critical aspect of becoming the very best you can be on contest day “getting your house in order.”

You Must Have Faith In Your Plan!
Don’t try to gauge the quality of your body’s development or level of conditioning too often. Have confidence in the plan-of-attack that you’ve adopted. You must have a sense of certainty that if you eat properly, train hard, and meet most (if not all) of the small daily goals that you’ve set, you’ll be your very best at the end.
If you try and gauge how you look too often, you’ll drive yourself crazy. Your perspective will probably change about 100 times during the course of your contest preparation season.
You are NOT in the right mindset due to the strict dieting needed and the stress preparing for your contest to make objective evaluations on a day-to-day basis.
More importantly, you can’t make rational adjustments to your plan on a day-to-day basis.No one can.

Dieting Correctly for Your Contest Is A Lot More Than Just Cutting Your Calories and Not Eating Pizza
It should go without saying thatur diet is an extremely important part of contest preparation. The way you eat during your journey will have the greatest impact–bar none–on the quality of the physique you’ll ultimately present on stage.
Here are the two definitions I use for the word “diet” as they refer to your contest preparation nutritional program:
One definition for the word “diet” is to eliminate (or drastically reduce) the amount of non-healthy “junk” food meals that you eat. All of your meals (or the great majority of them) should include only the standard bodybuilding foods such as lean meats, egg whites, unprocessed starchy carbohydrates; vegetables, protein powders and meal replacements .
In addition to eliminating certain foods while you are dieting, eating properly at this time means eating enough of the right foods at the most efficient times during the day in order to build muscle mass and lose body fat.
The other definition I use for the word “diet” would still include the elimination of non-healthy foods but, in this particular definition, this type of dieting also means that you eat in a calorie-deprived manner. In other words, you intentionally eat fewer calories than your body will burn every day.
It’s important to understand that, just because you refrain from eating delicious, non-healthy foods, you will not necessarily shed your body fat and get shredded for a contest–no matter how long you cut out those foods from your nutritional program. You must gradually and subtly “starve” yourself a little in order to drop your body fat levels.
The first step of your contest diet is conditioning your metabolism to run faster and more efficiently. But don’t reduce your calories too much too far out from your contest. You should eat as much “clean” food as possible when you start your diet. That way, you have more room to gradually reduce your daily caloric intake. As long as you are losing weight with food you are eating and have allowed plenty of time to get yourself ready for your contest, don’t worry about how much food you are eating.
To speed up your metabolism, you also need to start cleaning up your diet. By “cleaning up” I mean that you should greatly reduce (if not totally eliminate) unhealthy, non-bodybuilding, or “junk” meals. You must start eating all of your meals at well-planned, specifically-scheduled times throughout the day. That will get your metabolism running smoothly, efficiently, and like “clockwork.”

Contest Preparation SECRETS: Which Protein Source Is Better for Contest Preparation? Beef, Chicken, Tuna, or Egg Whites?
Make Your Decision as to Which Protein You’ll Eat–And Then Execute with Confidence!<strong />
Many competitive bodybuilders debate as to which form of “real” food protein sources are the very best when preparing for a show. Beef, chicken, tuna, and egg whites seem to be the most popular protein sources.
So, what EXACTLY is the very best source of real food protein? Many bodybuilders feel that beef gives their muscles a fuller appearance. Some people choose chicken because they believe their body processes it more efficiently than other proteins. Others choose tuna because it has a lower caloric content per ounce and is more convenient. And, why egg whites? Could it be because they are more of a “breakfast food” or our bodybuilding forefathers all ate egg whites? Personally, I don’t believe it matters what type of real food protein you eat—as long as the grams of protein and/or the calories it contains fits within your strategically-planned contest preparation diet.
I understand, however, every bodybuilder has his personal preference and his reasons behind it. Some bodybuilders believe that certain proteins make their muscle appear fuller. As far as a type of protein makes your muscles appear fuller, that’s probably a particular bodybuilder’s personal preference or opinion based on emotion. And, if you’ve been though the mental and emotional roller coaster ride that comes with contest preparation, you can’t always trust the bodybuilder’s (who currently going through the process) opinion anyway. His mind just isn’t totally objective—no matter what he tries to tell you.
Besides, who really cares how full your muscles look until the minute you step on stage, anyway? That’s the only time fuller muscles really count. That really shouldn’t be a determining factor if you are getting increasingly leaner for a contest while preserving as much muscle mass as possible. When you look at the big picture of contest preparation that spans over 12 to 20 weeks, executing your structured nutritional plan on a consistent basis is what’s most important–not the particular type of protein you eat.
You shouldn’t think that you are doing yourself a huge favor by choosing one over another. At the same time, you shouldn’t let any uncertainty distract you or creep into your psyche because you might not have picked the “magic” protein source.

They Got You Looking This Good, Didn’t They? And, They Will Make You Look Even Better!
Here’s a question for you. If you believed that the foods you were eating during your contest preparation were contributing greatly to the quality of your physique, why in the world would you ever stop eating those foods? You wouldn’t, would you?
For some reason, many bodybuilders mistakenly believe that they must eliminate protein powders and meal replacements from their diets when they are many weeks away from their show. This is a big mistake!
I certainly believe there is a tremendous value in real food. But, if you think the human body can function just as effectively and efficiently with real food alone, you are kidding yourself. Your muscle-building and fat-loss efforts will be greatly enhanced if you support them with high-quality, state-of-the-art sports supplementation. Athletes today are getting bigger, stronger, leaner, and faster as the advancements in sports nutrition evolve.
If I were to guess, the strategy that advises you to eliminate protein powder and meal replacements from your contest preparation diet stems from the belief that these supplements contain too much sodium. The amount of sodium in these products is a non-factor during your contest journey except for at the very last few days. Maybe you should severely limit their intake during the last several days before a contest–but several weeks before then is totally unnecessary.
The other rational that I’ve heard is the “the body will work much harder digesting real food and you will burn more calories.” Oh really? How many more calories do you think you really burn? And, even if you did burn a few more, is it worth the difficulty that you are adding to an already challenging process? I certainly do not think so!
In fact, cutting VP2 and Muscle XGF from your contest preparation diet is plain old foolish. In your calorie-deprived state while contest dieting, you’ll need these high-performance “super foods” more than ever!

Conditioning, the visible degree of leanness and muscularity, is an extremely important factor that determines the quality of the physique you’ll present of stage. NOW is the time to work hard to reduce your body fat levels. You must make certain to use all of the time ahead of you. Don’t wait until the final weeks and be forced to take drastic measures in ordered to be prepared for your show in time.
Continual and honest assessment of your progress is essential to your success. Many competitive bodybuilders make the mistake of “falling in love” with the way they are looking far too early in the contest preparation process. “I’m already in the shape of my life!” or “I’m way ahead of schedule” are some comments you’ll often hear them say. When you look at yourself in the mirror during your contest preparation journey, turn around. Evaluate how well your hamstrings and glutes are coming in. Keeping your eye on achieving the “gold standard” in conditioning will keep you humble and working hard. Trust me!

You’ve Done Everything It Takes to Build a Great Body So Do Yourself A Big Favor and Do Everything It takes to Present It Well On Stage
Practicing your posing is very important. There’s absolutely no doubt about it! If you are going to go through all the time and effort of dieting, weight training, cardiovascular training, and sacrificing a lot of the more enjoyable things in life to enter a bodybuilding contest, you should take a just a little bit more time and effort to make sure you present what you’ve created in the best possible manner.
I urged bodybuilders not to worry too much about posing on contest day until the it is the right time. Instead, I recommend that you put all of your focus and energy toward creating the outstanding big, full, muscular, and lean physique that you want to present on the special day. I suggest that competitive bodybuilders should not start posing until about six or so weeks out from their show.
At the six-week point, it’s now time to start practicing your posing.
When you begin your posing practice, it’s extremely important that you make sure you are hitting each of the poses correctly. I don’t care how many hours of posing practice you put into the presentation of your physique if you do not poses correctly when the day of your show arrives.
That’s why you must get off to a good start when you begin your posing practice. Hire a posing coach who lives nearby for personal instruction if possible. A posing coach can be any current or former competitive bodybuilder in your local area who you feel is experienced, qualified, and willing to help. You should also invest in instructional posing videos.
Take control of the quality of your posing yourself by taking still digital camera images and video footage. Before you get too far along into the practicing process, you should break down the pictures and video footage–just as a coach would break down his team’s play execution from game films. The couple of hours you spend critique your presentation at the beginning will save you a significant amount of wasted time posing incorrectly without even realizing you are doing so.
When you start to practice, schedule your sessions at a certain time each day just as you would your meals, weight training workouts, or cardiovascular training sessions. Start out by doing three or four 30 minutes sessions a week and build from there as needed. During the last three weeks, I would recommend that you practice posing every single day.
Be structured in your approach to posing practice. Have a consistent and systematic plan during every practice session. You should start with the relaxed quarter turns, move on to the mandatory posing, then to your 60-second routine (without music), and finish off with your 90-second routine set to music. Practice your posing in this orderly fashion every single time you work on the proper presentation of your physique.
Although you’ll only need to hold each pose for about five seconds during your contest, I would recommend that you hit each pose for 15 seconds as you practice. This way, you’ll build up the physical and mental endurance you’ll need to do the very best job of displaying the body you’ve worked so hard to create the very best when the pressure is on.

Don’t Assume That You’ll Look Your Best Without Some Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Psychological Adjustments Along the Way)
No matter how well you may think you are doing at preparing for your upcoming contest, you can never let up. You must continue working diligently and intelligently all the way up until the time you step off stage after the evening show.
You simply can’t take anything for granted. Nothing! You just can’t let up until the very end—and not a minute before it’s completely finished. You can’t waste valuable time due to complacency. You can never get back the time you’ve wasted.
There’s always more you can do. There’s always a higher level to achieve. When you consider staying focused, eliminating distractions, keeping the proper level of motivation, commitment, and perspective, weight training, dieting, cardiovascular training, posing practice, tanning, staying in stock with everything you need, preparing what you need for the actual show, making sure your “regular” life doesn’t get too of out whack, and somehow getting your mind right so can enjoy the journey (without enjoying it too much, if you know what I mean), there are simply too many aspects to the contest preparation process for you to let yourself become complacent.
I like to compare contest preparation to flying an airplane. Who cares how well you are flying the plane halfway through your trip if you make a crash-landing at the end of it?

The Competitor Who Has the Highest Standards for What He Expects from Himself for the Longest Period of Time Will Win (All Other Factors Being Equal)
One of the toughest challenges of contest preparation is to keep driving yourself to a higher level throughout the entire journey. It’s easy to become a little complacent when you know you are already working extremely hard and looking really good. This is especially true when you are clearly head and shoulders above the rest of your friends and acquaintances (both inside and outside of the gym) in terms of dedication, discipline, and physical development.
“You are looking great! You are going to do really well!” or “Wow! You must be pretty close to being ready for your contest, aren’t you? How much longer do you have to go?” are probably just a fraction of the positive feedback being said to you at this time. Although their words are encouraging and make you feel good, you can’t buy into the hype. I willing to bet that every competitor who will step onstage with you at your upcoming contest is being showered with those very same complimentary comments as you read this paragraph.
As Bill Bradley, the former New York Knicks basketball star and New Jersey state senator, used to say, “There is always someone out there working harder than you are.” Those words prevented him from getting too full of himself and kept him always striving for a higher level of dedication. I have reflected upon his words as I’ve prepared for my bodybuilding contests over the years.
No matter how hard you are working to prepare for your contest, there’s always a higher level of work, dedication, discipline, and follow through that you can execute. There’s always one more rep you can pump out; five more pounds you can lift; one more calorie you can burn or one-tenth of a mile more you can travel during your cardiovascular training session; at least another meal you can eat exactly on time; or a few more minutes you can spend perfecting your posing.
But you will not strive for that higher level until you first do two things. The first thing you must do is realize that you can indeed work even harder and secondly, you must specifically identify exactly what is the higher level you are shooting for.
Look, it’s no threat to your ego having to admit that you can become even better at preparing for your show. Doing so doesn’t take away from anything you have already done up until this point in time. You just want to build upon what you’ve been doing until this point-in-time. As the saying goes “The tougher you are on yourself now, the easier life will become in the future.” You might as well be extremely tough on yourself now when you have time to make adjustments. That’s a heck of a lot better than wishing you would have done more the day after your contest, isn’t it? The pain you put yourself through now will lead to more pleasure for you to enjoy later.
Identify exactly what you must do to take yourself to the next level. This is where setting goals at the beginning of your day and week–and then assessing what you have and have not accomplished at the end of each day and week really augment your efforts.
How has your weight training been going–really? Have you missed any cardio sessions lately? Are you following through with your “Daily Disciplines” or are you rationalizing your lack of follow through by telling yourself “I’m ahead of schedule” or “I have plenty of time left to get ready for my show”? Be honest with yourself. This is not the time to tell yourself stories to avoid short-term pain or disappointment.
Believe me, the gut-wrenching pain of falling short of being your best after your contest is over is far more painful than the benign pain of admitting to yourself now that your efforts can be tightened up a little.
