Just an update…

July 25, 2009

If you guys remember, I started the low carb "thing" the day right after Memorial Day.  Since then I’ve lost about 8 lbs and a total of 14 lbs since I decided to get serious back in March.  It’s amazing but I’m feeling sexy and confident again! I’m now able to fit back into my size 14 uniform pants. And the best part of it all is that I have no fear of them ripping on me lol!

Its not an easy road but its well worth it. When you start to see the weight melting off, it just fuels your desire to keep on going. Unfortunately I’m not working out as much as I would love too.  My 2 grandkids (2) live at home with me with their mom and I do most of the work when it comes to them. My daughter wasn’t ready to be a mom and it seems like she will never be ready so now I find myself raising 2 more, on my own.  So by the time that I’m finished with the grandkids, in the morning, its time for me to start to get ready for work.

Regardless, I’ve been able to squeeze 3 days of workouts in a week and sometimes even 4!  I’m not complaining though, cause it’s better than nothing and I think that its somewhat consistent.  I’ve still managed to keep the carbs to a minimum of 20gms a day and some weekends I take a break and treat myself.

Let’s see what August brings!

Consistency ; )

June 19, 2009

Yes…Now I finally get it! So many years of yo-yo dieting and sissy workouts! You gotta stay focused, eat clean and workout…..on a regular basis. If you fall off the wagon, dust da bootie off and jump back on track!

I was back at the gym this morning cause I was feeling better from a cold that I had. Did upperbody and a pathetic 15 minutes of cardio, on the eliptical (I KNOW) I need to work on cardio!!  3 weeks, so far, of No simple carbs at all!!!  I really don’t miss them because thats whats keeping me from dropping the weight.

The plan is to get down to an acceptable size then start adding complex carbs in 5gms. increments.  This will be done I can determine exactly how much carbs my body needs to stay lean and not gain bodyfat.  I will post progress pics the 28 of June. This months goal is to reach 174 lbs. by July 1st.

God bless and stay healthy!

:D WHEW!!!

May 28, 2009

Dear Lord!  Finally, a 2 pound loss!  Does anyone have any idea how long it has taken for me to lose anything at all? Don’t get me wrong now…I mean, I know that I have lost some body fat. It is obvious by looking at the first pics that I posted in March.  It’s not much but I’m not complaining. I just felt that I was doing something wrong or not pushing myself enough.

I just finished reading an article about body types. I have known that I am an endomorph.  I have actually read quite a few articles on this particular body type and the only difference between the article that I read today and the others is this….we endomorphs DO have to watch how much carbs we eat!  I’ve been eating complex carbs…brown rice, low glycemic fruits etc….working out hard, 4x a week along with cardio.  Nothing!!  Very little progress since March.  Even though the lean muscles are packing on, the pounds should be coming off as well.

So, I had decided this Memorial Day weekend that I was going to change things up and see what happens.  No carbs at all, except for veggies.  This, along with heavy lifting, is working for me!  I had decided to take this approach after reading about the C.H.A. diet by Scivation.  It’s a bit strict but I’ve modified it to fit me and my needs.  I will follow this for about 2 weeks then start cycling my carbs.

I also changed up my routine, went from 1 body part a day to working out upper body 2 days and lower body another 2 days of the week.  Cardio will be done the 3 days I have off from lifting.  I was beginning to lose my motivation and hope but was trying hard not to lose focus by giving hope and motivation to others. I’m sooo glad that I did not falter too far and am trying to walk the line.

Lets see what the month of June will bring!

Hectic week for me!

May 21, 2009

This week was a very busy one for me. I had company staying with me in the beginning of this week and I had to work not one but two 16 hr. shifts.  As you all can imagine, I’m pooped! I couldn’t get any cardio in at all but was able to workout with the weights that I do have at home. It was only 2 days out of the week: Upper body and then lower body, but I feel good that I was able to do something instead of nothing.  Saturday all should be back to normal and it’s back to the grind. :)

It’s Grillin’ Time! :)

May 20, 2009

Lime-Honey Glazed Chicken:

6 tablespoons honey
6 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce
2 teaspoons freshly grated lime zest
6 tablespoons lime juice
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
4 6-ounce bone-in chicken thighs, skin and excess fat removed
2 12-ounce bone-in chicken breasts, skin and excess fat removed, cut in half crosswise

1. Mix honey, soy sauce, lime zest, lime juice and crushed red pepper in a large bowl. Add chicken pieces; stir to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
2. About 20 minutes before you are ready to grill, preheat a gas grill (with all burners lit)
to 400°F or build a fire in a charcoal grill and let it burn down to medium heat (about 400°F).
3. If using a gas grill, turn off one burner (leaving 1 to 2 burners lit, depending on your grill). If using a charcoal grill, move the coals to one side. Remove the chicken pieces from the marinade (reserve marinade) and place bone-side down (with the thick part of the meat facing up) on the unheated side of the grill rack. Close the lid and roast undisturbed for 25 minutes.
4. Meanwhile, place the marinade in a small saucepan over medium-high heat and boil until reduced by about half and thickened to a glaze, 8 to 10 minutes.
5. Rotate the chicken to other spots on the unheated portion of the grill to ensure even cooking and lightly brush with some of the glaze. Cover and continue roasting, basting once more about halfway through cooking, until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the meat without touching bone registers 165°F, 10 to 20 minutes more.

Even though the serving size is 2 pancakes, I personally think that 1 pancake is perfect if trying to shed some pounds. I’m just wondering if I can find the buttermilk powder and egg white powder at the market. Anyways, here it is:

HEALTHLY PANCAKES

2 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour

1 cup buttermilk powder (see Note)

5 tablespoons dried egg whites, such as Just Whites (see Note)

1/4 cup sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder

2 teaspoons baking soda

1 teaspoon salt 1 cup flaxseed meal (see Note)

1 cup nonfat dry milk

1/2 cup wheat bran or oat bran

1 1/2 cups nonfat milk

1/4 cup canola oil

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Whisk flour, buttermilk powder, dried egg whites, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Stir in flaxseed meal, dry milk and bran. (Makes 6 cups dry mix.)

2. Combine milk, oil and vanilla in a glass measuring cup.

 3. Place 2 cups pancake mix in a large bowl. (Refrigerate the remaining pancake mix in an airtight container for up to 1 month or freeze for up to 3 months.) Make a well in the center of the pancake mix. Whisk in the milk mixture until just blended; do not overmix. (The batter will seem quite thin, but will thicken up as it stands.) Let stand for 5 minutes.

4. Coat a nonstick skillet or griddle with cooking spray and place over medium heat. Whisk the batter. Using 1/4 cup batter for each pancake, cook pancakes until the edges are dry and bubbles begin to form, about 2 minutes. Turn over and cook until golden brown, about 2 minutes longer. Adjust heat as necessary for even browning.

NUTRITION INFORMATION: Per serving: 272 calories; 13 g fat (2 g sat, 6 g mono); 8 mg cholesterol; 27 g carbohydrate; 12 g protein; 5 g fiber; 471 mg sodium; 336 mg potassium. Nutrition bonus: Calcium (24% daily value), Fiber (20% dv). 1 1/2 Carbohydrate Servings Exchanges: 2 starch, 1 very lean meat, 2 fat (mono)

TIP: Notes: Buttermilk powder, such as Saco Buttermilk Blend, is a useful substitute for fresh buttermilk. Look in the baking section or with the powdered milk in most markets. Dried egg whites are convenient in recipes calling for egg whites because there is no waste. Look for brands like Just Whites in the baking or natural-foods section of most supermarkets or online at bakerscatalogue.com. You can find flaxseed meal in the natural-foods section of large supermarkets. You can also start with whole flaxseeds: Grind 2/3 cup whole flaxseeds to yield 1 cup.

Sooooo Disappointed! :(

May 11, 2009

When I got up this morning, I was procrastinating!  It was progress pics day and I knew, deep down, that I wasn’t going to be happy with what I was about to see.  The reason being is that I have been slacking…slacking in my workouts and most importantly..my diet. I have been eating clean and even taking all meals to work with me. But, my problem is always when I’m home after work or on my days off. I tend to have a cookie here and maybe a piece of pie there. We all know, that eventually we will pay the price of eating stuff we are not suppose to. At least eating them more than once a week, instead of on the day that we chose to make our cheat day! I went from going to the gym faithfully 4x a week to just going 2x a week. Even though I know that this is due to the fact that I have been working long hours at work, I’m just so disappointed in myself! I know that I shouldn’t be so hard on myself but I can’t help it.  In order for me to do what I made up my mind to do, in order for me to transform my body the way that I would like,…there is no room for laziness, there is no time to be wasted with eating the junk that I already know is going to create a roadblock for me to get to the body of my dreams.

Even though my disappointment weighs heavily on me today, it in no way means that I’am giving up and going to continue to stuff my face with pastries! I decided to change my routine and I started this morning…did upper body  and tomorrow is abs and cardio. Stepping up the cardio from 30 minutes to 45 minutes at least 3x a week. No more excuses! I’m also considering cycling my complex carbs. Alternating between low carb days and high carb days.

I know that I have come a long way. I use to turn to food whenever I felt down about anything in my life, but today, instead I was fueled by my disappointment! I refuse to let food get the best of me and continue to be out of shape! So I’m taking the same advice that I give to my many bodyspace friends-just taking it one day at a time, I’m not giving up and I will be ready for my next set of pics. :)

Now, I’m just praying, that when I get home, I will just drink my multivatimin along with my psyllium husk and call it a night!! No snacks……PLEASE!  LOL…will keep you all posted tomorrow!

Good Night! :)

What A Dilemna!

May 6, 2009

Ok….I’ve been going to the gym since March of this year and I’m quite happy with the progress that I’m seeing! But—I have a dilemna and it goes like this:  I remember reading somewhere, not quite sure if it was in "Body for Life", that the only way for one to transform their body is, of course, by eating "clean" and working out with free weights. Not the machines/equipment that I have been using, but FREE WEIGHTS! Now, you probably thinking, well why don’t I just start using free weights, if I know that this is what I need to do?!

Everytime that I go to the gym, I go alone. I have no workout buddy. The free weight section at the gym that I go to is strictly males! No females ever wander into that territory. I know, I know….what is wrong with me!  lol.  I’m extrememly shy and feel weird about venturing into this all-manland by myself.  So instead, I just go real heavy on the weight machines, doing about 4 exercises per body part then finish off with the cardio. I know I need to work on this and try to get over this childishness, but for now, I’m wondering if anyone out there has made a big difference, transformation wise, by just doing machine workouts.

So, my goal for this coming winter (I know it seems far away) is to move into that territory. I’m hoping that I will feel more confident by losing some more weight. If that doesn’t work, then I really don’t know what I’m going to do! Time will tell!! :O

Nothing New.

May 1, 2009

Today, I found out that one of the many supplements that I poison my body with, on a regular basis may cause liver damage. Though I was upset of this fact, it was not a total surprise to me! I mean, most of the ingredients listed on almost every supplement are stuff that we have never heard off. But knowing this fully, I must admit, that I am more upset of the fact that I really don’t know if I can do this without some kind of stimulant! Sounds crazy, might even sound a bit ignorant, I know!  I have always, since the beginning of time, used something, anything that would make me feel energized. I associated the energized feeling with the notion that this meant that the fat was being melted off of my body. I know that this is not the case.  This supplements are meant for energy which in turn help us to remain focused along with appetite control. So now, this is the moment of truth!! To find a somewhat safe supplement that will show results OR just do it all without a fat burner. Maybe they don’t work or maybe its all mental!! I don’t know but I guess I’m about to find out.  I’m going to take a rest from supplements except in the form of natural vitamins and protein powders. At least for a while, until I do some research and see what I find!! :)
