Rest between sets?

I have been experimenting with rest between sets and yesterday I completed the 55 min. workout for chest, shoulders and triceps in 35 minutes - it was brutal! Since the total reps I was able to perform went down significantly, I wonder which method is best for muscle growth, short rest periods 30-45 sec. and fewer total reps or longer 1-2 minutes breaks and more reps?
