Have you ever watched ESPN and seen how they basically salivate over certain athletes? They do profiles on their past and what adversity they have overcome to get where they are. They talk about how dedicated they must be to be a professional athlete and to excel in their sport of choice.
I watched one of these and got to thinking. For every one of those "special" people, there are a thousand people who show much more dedication and overcome much more adversity in order to accomplish their goals. They don’t have agents kissing their butt everyday to get their 15%. They don’t have nutritionists and trainers who can monitor every move and ensure they are meeting their goals.
Oooooh. So and so made it in a small college and got a scholarship to Super Big University and got drafted in the 3rd round of the draft. Now he is about to start his first game in the pros. He is such an inspiration.
You know what is inspiring to me? A mom of 6 and grandmother of at least one who gets up at 5 a.m. to make sure the kids are off to school. She goes to a full time job and busts her ass at that job. She cooks, cleans, and run errands every damn day and STILL gets an hour of cardio in and trains legs after that. Where is her feature on SportsCenter?
How about the soldier on a 15 month leave in Iraq? He gets up every morning with three objectives.
1. Get home to see the family again.
2. Defend my country so it remains free.
3. I got to do shoulders today.
Let’s put that guy on CNN instead of hours of coverage on OJ going to prison.
How about someone on the verge of uncertain death because of being overweight and eating horribly. He turns his entire life around and loses pounds upon pounds of weight and gets into the best shape of his life. He goes on to inspire hundreds and possibly thousands of people to do the same. That is more inspiring to me than some pampered quarterback finally making it to the big game.
Here is to the TRUE champions. Those stories are right here on BodySpace. Not on ESPN, not on FOX, but they are friends to many of us. You are my inspiration. And as God as my witness, someday these stories will be told to the masses. They need to be heard and recognized. Rock on and Rock strong.
ROCK
P.S. None of the stories above are mine. They are on my friends list. One story applies to two people.
