Back and Calves….

Wednesday, January 30th, 2008

I was suppose to train back this morning so I did that but I decided to add calves in too. My calves are probably my weakest body part. I have small calves that just dont seem to want to grow.  I have to admit that I have not made calves a priority in my training.  So I am going to change that. I decided to give calves a training session all to themselves just as I do for arms or chest etc….What do you think?  Are you training calves enough?

Usually we think about biceps or pecs as impressive body parts but good calves are also attention getters….take a look at this training session !

Well today starts my big kick off….oh did I already say that yesterday?  Well officially, as of today I have no excuse not to train my butt off because I just got a new (well not exactly new) car yesterday evening.  This means I can be at the gym on time for a full cardio and weight training session twice a day without having to rely on public transport.

Oh guess what, I am trying some new supplements too.  My new job has my trial all kinds of supplements so not to worry I will keep you posted as to what is good.  So far I have tried SAN Fierice and BSN NO Xplode.  Today I am going to try Universal Storm which is more for pump than energy in that it appears not to contain caffiene.

Speaking of caffiene:

The new Snickers Charge candy bar, spiked with caffeine to add a jolt to weary afternoons.

Mars Snackfoods U.S.  is giving a jolt to its candy offerings with something new: Caffeine.

The company has launched a new product, called Snickers Charged, which is being marketed as a mid afternoon energy booster. In addition to the peanuts, nougat, caramel and chocolate, the candy bar contains 60 milligrams of caffeine, taurine and B-vitamins.

In comparison, an 8-ounce soft drink contains 20 to 40 milligrams of caffeine, an 8-ounce coffee contains 65-120 milligrams of the stimulant and an 8-ounce energy drink contains 72-80 milligrams of caffeine.

“Being that Snickers has a history as a satisfactory snack, this was a great opportunity for us to add caffeine, taurine and B-vitamins to the recipe,” Ryan Bowling Mars Snackfoods U.S. spokesperson, said.

The packaging features an image of a Rhino, which is meant to signify “energy,” he said.

The company is trying to appeal to people who are looking for an energy boost, mostly between the hours of 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., which it calls the “Snickers Charged Re-Power Hour.” A recent survey found that 64% of people said they need their energy recharged in the afternoon at least three to four times a week.

Snickers Charged is part of a growing new initiative by companies to incorporate caffeine into candy products. But despite the appeal of candy for children, Mars said it isn’t targeting kids.

To promote the product, Mars Snackfoods is hitting college campuses to hand out about 500,000 samples at basketball games. It has teamed up with AntiGravity, an entertainment theatrical company, to distribute the bar at halftime shows.

“This is all geared to a mature audience,” Bowling said. “Mars made a pact last year that it would not be marketing anything to kids under the age of 12. We are very sensitive of that.”

Radio spots on sports programs, in-store advertising, displays and online marketing at www.Snickers. com support the launch.

Snickers Charged will be available in food, mass merchant, club, convenience and drug stores through March. The limited-time offering helps Mars Snackfoods’ gauge consumer interest in the product.

“It tested well internally,” Bowling. “We feel strongly the product will do well.”

Mars Snackfoods this month also launched a new limited edition flavor of its Twix candy bar designed to give people a jolt. Twix Java is made with espresso beans and coffee-flavored caramel and will be available in stores through February.

Other companies that have infused sweets with caffeine include, Schuster Marketing, the maker of Blitz power Mints, which launched Blitz Energy Gum, a sugarfree gum, with 55 mg of caffeine per piece; Best Sweet, Inc., launched the XLR8 Energy Chew, a soft chew/supplement that includes caffeine, guarana, and ginseng and Dakota Valley Products Inc. last year launched Sunseeds, sunflower seeds infused with caffeine and other energy boosters.

Just what we need…fatty food for fatty people…but at least they will be awake !  LOL

So when do you officially start contest prep?

Monday, January 28th, 2008

So when do you officially start your contest prep?  I am making today my official day because now I am "officially" settling into my new place and getting a car so I can get to my new job easily and of course…the gym.  This morning so far I have had coffee and my vitamins now I am off for a short blasting cardio session. After that I have my first big meeting on my new job (so I will rush the cardio so I wont be late!).  My job is with a nutritional supplement company. I am a food technologist so I help with product quality and formulations. I also ensure that the facility meets government manufacturing standards (FSANZ & TGA in Australian and New Zealand).

The IFBB NPFC Australia is April 27th….that gives me how many days?

How often do you do cardio?

Sunday, January 27th, 2008
Well, I was going once a day.  Mainly in the morning before breakfast of couse, but based on this research it would seem going and breaking cardio up into several shorter session would be better than doing one long session.  There are questions that this research does not answer such as…how long do we rest between cardio sessions for optimal effect and is doing one session in the morning and the other in the evening the same as splitting the session by 20 min?
Anyway it does give us hope that maybe the long cardio session is becoming out dated…unless of course you are going to do a marathon or triathlon.

Enhancement of fat metabolism by repeated bouts of moderate endurance exercise.

Department of Life Sciences, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo, 3-8-1 Komaba, Meguro-ku, Tokyo 153-8902, Japan, and Institute of Sports Medicine, Bispebjerg Hospital, Copenhagen, Denmark. kagotoh@mac.com

This study compared the fat metabolism between “a single bout of prolonged exercise” and “repeated bouts of exercise” of equivalent exercise intensity and total exercise duration. Seven men performed three trials: 1) a single bout of 60-min exercise (Single); 2) two bouts of 30-min exercise, separated by a 20-min rest between exercise bouts (Repeated); and 3) rest. Each exercise was performed with a cycle ergometer at 60% of maximal oxygen uptake. In the Single and Repeated trials, serum glycerol, growth hormone, plasma epinephrine, and norepinephrine concentrations increased significantly (P<0.05) during the first 30-min exercise bout. In the Repeated trial, serum free fatty acids (FFA), acetoacetate, and 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations showed rapid increases (P<0.05) during a subsequent 20-min rest period. During the second 30-min exercise bout, FFA and epinephrine responses were significantly greater in the Repeated trial than in the Single trial (P<0.05). Moreover, the Repeated trial showed significantly lower values of insulin and glucose than the Single trial. During the 60-min recovery period after the exercise, FFA, glycerol, and 3-hydroxybutyrate concentrations were significantly higher in the Repeated trial than in the Single trial (P<0.05). The relative contribution of fat oxidation to the energy expenditure showed significantly higher values (P<0.05) in the Repeated trial than in the Single trial during the recovery period. These results indicate that repeated bouts of exercise cause enhanced fat metabolism compared with a single bout of prolonged exercise of equivalent total exercise duration.
