My First Blog

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

Well, I’m rather new to this site and if it wasn’t for my boyfriend I wouldn’t be here at all.  To be quite honest, I am rather new to this whole bodybuildling thing in general.  Before last August I never went to the gym on my own, aside from workouts for soccer.  I know the basic jist of the workout regimine and how to use all of the machines but at first I was a little intimidated by all of the equiptment and the people so I sort of tagged along with my boyfriend, which I know he thought of as a nuisence.  Now I am much more confident in myself at the gym and I have no problem going to the gym alone or doing my own thing when we go together.

Let’s start back at the beginning.  Last August my boyfriend and I were house/dog-sitting for his sister down in San Diego.  We started to do some running at the dog park when we took the little guy for his playtime.  It was difficult because I hardly exercised for quite some time before that.  When we returned home for the beginning of school, we kept up the marathon training.  We completed 12 miles but we had to terminate the training due to some injuries.  Instead of running we started going to the gym, but due to some occasions (weddings, funerals, work, school, etc.) we quickly fell out of the routine.  Around the beginning of January we started going to the gym full-time (usually everyday, with the exception of Sunday as the relaxing day).  Being a biology major finishing my senior year of college it was sometimes difficult for me to find time in my schedule to keep up going to the gym.  At the end of this past March I had surgery to remove half of my thyroid.  I think part of my weight gain could be attributable to my lowered BMR due to having an underactive thyroid.

I had my surgery at the end of March and just started getting back into the routine about 2 weeks ago.  Now we go about 4-7 times per week and because of my work/school schedule we are usually out of sync as far as our workouts go.  My boyfriend typically goes to the gym for an hour in the morning to do cardio, and depending on my class schedule (whether or not I decide to actually go to class) I join him.  At first doing an hour was really tough for me, mostly because I get really bored doing the elliptical when there is nothing interesting on TV.  I try to read but sometimes that is difficult, too.  We have been doing long runs in preparation for the start of our marathon training on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday for the past 2 weeks.  Those days I typically do not go to the gym to workout but as the training continues and I feel that my body can take it (and my schedule permits), I intend to.

I graduate from college in less than a month (May 19) and we are thinking about moving to Las Vegas.  I think it will be difficult for us to continue the training through the move, especially with the summer heat we will be facing in the desert.  With the encouragement though, I think I could do it.  I still have pain in my knee during the long runs, but I have just attributed that to runner’s knee, try to push through it and then ice it and take two Tylenol after the run.  Hopefully it will subside soon enough.

I have also started adjusting my diet.  On this website they have the 8 week program to get the summer body and we started this week.  That means: no refined carbs.  This was a very diffucult thing to get used to for me.  I am the pickiest eater in the entire world and what I do eat is definately not healthy, by any sense of the word.  This week I have adjusted my diet to cut out all refined carbs and to increase my protein intake.  I have started eating every three hours, which is sort of difficult to do with my schedule, but once I do it for a few weeks I should be used to it.  Tomorrow starts week 2: more water.  I am not a drinker.  I can carry around a bottle of water with me all day long and take 3 sips from it so this one is going to be difficult at first as well.  Also, it is going to make me have to use the restroom quite frequently, and I have a problem using public restrooms so I will have to get over that phobia as well.  Sheesh.  Who knew I’d have to do all of this just to get looking sexy? Haha.

My boyfriend calls me his Lumpy girl, and rightly so.  I have a lot of lumps all over and I want to get rid of them…most of them.  I happen to like my tush but I just want to get it looking more sexified and not so flubbery.  Before he knows it hes going to have to call me Muscle girl. Haha.

Anyhow, it’s time for dinner and today is Sunday so I get to cheat all I want!  Surprisingly, I haven’t been eating much off my newly acquired diet, except for some pizza last night (but it was after midnight so technically it was today! :]).  I better go…dinnertime is quality time spent with my boyfriend on the couch. :]
