An Unexpected Tragedy

November 11, 2009

I wondered who had lost their mind to try and call me at 7am on a Saturday morning. It was the 7th. I was still trying to get out of bed.

I picked up my cell and had 6 missed calls and the red flags went up. The first text I saw was from my sister "Call dad *ASAP*". Alarms were going off in my head. Then a text from my dad: We’ll be heading your way in the morning. Please call me.

They live 5 hours away. Why were they coming here? What was wrong?

With shaky hands I called my dad, still in bed, but now wide awake. I started hoping my husband would come in the room so he could be there with me, but I didn’t have the voice to call him.

My father was telling me that my uncle, his brother, had been in a motorcycle accident the night before.

He was dead.

God, no! Of my father’s 11 brothers and sisters, his was the only number I had in my cell. Because I didn’t need any of the others. He checked up on my family constantly. He visited all the time. He brought us tomatoes from his vines and in the summer we had a cookout and swam in his pool.

This was not happening.

But the chain of events were taking place and as much as I didn’t want them to occur, they already had.

My husband was in shock. The kids haven’t quite grasped it yet.

A couple of cool things to note about my uncle:
- He was a veteran of the first Gulf War. With that, he’s receiving a full military sendoff tomorrow at the Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetary. His funeral is also today, Veteran’s Day.

The Defenders LEMC- My uncle was an avid motorcyclist and member of The Defenders, a local motorcycle club comprised of former military and police enthusiasts. After his burial tomorrow, The Defenders will ride to his accident site, be joined by several other motorcycle clubs from surrounding states, and they will finish his ride. That’s the most awesome thing I’ve ever heard.

(As an aside, his club members have been holding a vigil at his house since his death. They’ve chopped enough firewood that his widow, my aunt, won’t have to worry about it for the full winter. They’ve cleaned her carpets, brought food, and made sure she’s wanted for absolutely nothing. It’s truly been awesome to see, in every sense of the word.)Cleaning

- He was also an avid hunter, and had land across the street from my house. He’d come over in the early mornings after he got off work and sit in a tree stand, watching for deer. We never saw any. The day after we learned of his death, my Defenders Standing for a Great Manhusband saw a buck and two doe. It was his way of letting us know he’s alright.

Your prayers and thoughts are so appreciated. He was a great friend, uncle, and veteran and his loss has had a great impact on my family. We miss him so much.

Rest in peace, Uncle Raymond. We love you.

Too Little Fat? You can do that?

September 14, 2009

So for the umpteenth night in a row, I finish dinner…and 45 minutes later I’m starving. Not like "I could eat". I mean ravenous. Like I missed dinner or something.

My dh and I started the Paleo Diet, kinda like a caveman diet. We’re looking at it from a scientific angle and apparently, the cave dwellers didn’t eat grains, legumes, or tubers (potatoes).

So my daily diet consists of:

Morning:
5oz fresh fruit
3oz chicken

Mid-morning:
5oz fruit
10 almonds

Lunch:
2 cups spinach
5 cherry tomatoes
half a cucumber
2-3 oz chicken

Post workout shake:
30g EAS protein
8oz water

Dinner:
3oz chicken
10 asparagus spears
5 cherry tomatoes

See? Very little fat. That’s what’s leading to my hunger pangs. I didn’t realize you could do that to yourself.

All that to say, I gotta add some fat to my diet or the rest of this weight isn’t gonna come off. And since I wanna be Transformation of the Month so bad I can taste it, that means I got a LOT of work ahead of me.

Who knew eating could be so complicated?

Getting Off the Island

June 17, 2009

I’ve been "stuck at a plateau" for almost a year in my weight and measurements.

I use the quotation marks because that’s the excuse most folks use when they stop losing the easy-to-get-to fat they’ve put on over the years.

I complained to anyone who’d listen about how I was working out so hard, eating clean, and yet still wasn’t losing weight - not even inches off the tape measure!

Mind you, I wasn’t writing down what I was eating. Just knew it was clean and I was keeping my portions small enough so that I wasn’t hungry when I finished a meal, but also wasn’t pushing away from the table with my jeans button loosened, ya know?

So a couple o weeks ago, I start actually logging what I eat in a day. (I know, I know - why’d it take me a year, right?)

Day 1 - 800+ calories
Day 2 - barely 900 calories
Day 3 - 840 calories (Holy crap!)

You get the picture. This went on for about a week. Me realizing that I wasn’t even breaking a thousand calories in a day. Holy crap. No wonder I was hanging on to my fat like an Overeaters Anonymous group fighting over the last Sweet Sixteen donut (I love those).

At any rate, I kept away from the scale and the tape measure and ate more often and larger portions for a week. I logged (most of) them and have been averaging about 1300 calories. Still not ideal, but geez, better than 800!

The results? Two pounds down on the scale and an inch off my waist. Woohoo!

As far as my body knew, I’d been trapped on a deserted island and it wasn’t letting go of the stuff I was eating til I could prove we were "off the island"!

I’m happy to say that my ship has come in and we’re headed someplace nice - maybe a new swimsuit will be in order???

Banana Nut Pancakes

May 28, 2009
I posted this on a thread in a forum, but thought it was worth putting on here too!
My dh got a recipe from Reps mag that I’ve been swearing by for about 3 weeks now! It’s for oatmeal pancakes - they’re SUPER easy and yummy! I modified it a bit:

3/4 cup egg whites
1 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup finely chopped walnuts
dash o’ cinnamon
splash o’ vanilla
2Tbsp organic sugar (original recipe called for artificial sweetner)
2/3 cup chopped pineapple
1 scoop vanilla protein powder

*note: the original recipe called for raisins. But I didn’t like the consistency in the pancakes so I opted for sliced banana on top as a ‘garnish’.

**note: I also add a 1/2 cup of vanilla soymilk to the batter so it isn’t so dry.

Heat your pan to medium and lightly coat with cooking spray. I make 2 medium sized pancakes per morning (about 1/4 cup per pancake). This mix lasts me 3 mornings.

The recipe (and I agree) suggested this can be made the night before. Its so much easier to wake up and just plop them in the pan! Just make sure to smooth the mixture out when you first put it in the pan to make it pancake-like. Otherwise it sits in a ball in the middle of the pan and doesn’t cook evenly.

With the banana on top and the walnuts in the mix, it tastes like banana nut bread! Yum.

Why Michael Phelps is Still My Hero

March 16, 2009

OK, admittedly, the guy’s pretty cute. But that’s not why he’s my hero.

It goes back to the Beijing Olympics. Yes, I’m addicted to the Olympics and watched them just about every second they were on the air (except basketball. Just never been a fan.)

Swimming and gymnastics. Those are my things.

So I’m watching Mike Phelps. He’s going for yet another gold and yet another world record. And about halfway through the race, I realize something’s wrong. His form is off. He’s not blowing the competition outta the water like he normally does. In fact, he barely makes it into the first place slot. WTF?

Is he tired? Has he lost his touch?

He comes outta the water, throws his goggles, and has an angry look on his face. Yes, something’s definitely wrong with my Mikey.

A later interview revealed that when he dove into the water, his goggles began to fill up with water. Halfway through the race he couldn’t even see anymore.

So how did he win? How did he take yet another gold medal?

(This still amazes me) He knew exactly how many strokes he needed to take to get from one end of the pool to the other. He was counting. He couldn’t see, didn’t know if he was swimming straight or not. He was just counting.

He practiced so hard and for so long that when he couldn’t see how much more he needed to do in order to win, he just counted until he knew when to reach out and touch the wall.

I wanna be that determined and driven that I practice so hard that I know exactly how many steps I need to go to finish the next 5k I race in, how many reps to complete the set that creates the muscle which leads to the body I want to achieve.

I wanna be like Mike.

A Day in the Life

March 14, 2009

I filled out a survey recently to test a new fat burner and had to give a ’snapshot’ of my daily life. I thought it’d be fun to post here too:

Let’s start with nutrition (since that’s the key to 80% of your weight loss right there!):

Breakfast -
1 whole, free range organic egg, lightly fried over whole wheat toast
1 large cup of coffee with organic, soy milk instead of creamer (its my only vice)

Mid-morning snack -
Either a Berry Soyjoy bar, or a Banana Manna Pure Organic Fruit and Nut Bar (by Dr. Andrew Weil), or a large banana

Lunch -
1 Morning Star Asian Veggie Patty, 1 sheet dried seaweed, 1 cup cooked brown rice

Mid-afternoon snack -
1 apple or any of the snacks previously listed

(Typical) Dinner -
Homemade organic white bean chili with chicken and tomatoes, onions, and garlic

Mid-evening snack -
1 seedless organic orange

Other than the 1 cup of coffee in the morning, I drink nothing but water the rest of the day, no exceptions. Ten 8oz glasses, approximately.

Now, for the workout:

Monday:

Weights - Legs, Triceps, and Shoulders - approx 1 hr in length, with dumbells (never more than 10lbs lifted per dumbell)

Cardio - Briskly walk 30 minutes

Tuesday:

Weights - Arms, chest, and back - approx 1 hr in length, with dumbells (again, never more than 10lbs each)

Cardio - Briskly walk for 30 minutes

Wednesday - Run 5k, no weight training (personal best time: 25 minutes)

Thursday - Repeat Monday’s routine

Friday - Repeat Tuesday’s routine

Saturday and Sunday - rest.

Supplements:

Morning -
Creatine
Fish Oil (half dose)
Milk Thistle (half dose)
Stinging Nettles (I have seasonal allergies) (half dose)
Daily multi (with no iron!) (half dose)
L-Glutimine (half dose)
Vitamin C (half dose)
Rhodiola
St. John’s Wort (half dose)

Evening (so I don’t pee them all out during the course of the day)
Fish Oil (half dose)
Milk Thistle (half dose)
Stinging Nettles (I have seasonal allergies) (half dose)
Daily multi (with no iron!) (half dose)
L-Glutimine (half dose)
Vitamin C (half dose)
L-Tryptophan
St. John’s Wort (half dose)

I am about a week away from taking my PFT exam via NESTA to become a certified personal trainer, so nutrition and fitness are a MUST in my future line of work.

I am 34 years old, live in Tennessee, eat organic as often as possible, and have 3 children. I am a copywriter, so I write for a living.

I weigh 144 pounds and according to the scale in the bathroom, am at 30% BF. However, when chosen I will have my BF professionally measured to ensure accuracy.

Considering I lost the first 60+ pounds on my own, getting rid of the last 14lbs would be fantastic! I would love to attribute the final pounds of weight loss to "Lean-Rescue"!

Fat burners I have used in the past (but have not taken in at least 6 months):
Six Star Rapid Lean
EFA Lean Gold
Hydroxycut
24hr Hollywood Diet
SlimQuick
Well? Whatdya think?

5 more days

March 9, 2009

Five days til my first 5k in quite some time.

The last time I ran a 5k was October 13, 2007. I finished the race, came home, and found out that my best friend (a 35 year old male) had a brain aneurysm and had stroked out in the emergency room lobby at Crawford Long in Atlanta.

I dropped every single thing I was doing for 4 months, shut down my business, and stayed by his side. He was originally given a 10% chance of recovery when they brought him into Emory. To this day, he has the mental capacity of a 15 year old and will never get beyond that.

At one point, I wore the t-shirt I’d gotten from running (ok, walking too - admittedly) in that race. It had the date of the race on the front of the shirt. He was still so disoriented that he couldn’t remember from one second to the next (literally) what the date or time was, where he was, or who most of the folks in the room were - including his own father. But he remembered me.

At one point, he looked at the shirt and asked me why it had October 13, 2007 on it if it was only October 11th. He became very upset, confused, and aggitated. I haven’t worn that shirt or thought about racing since.

That race was the 3rd one I’d run in 60 days.

This Saturday, I do this for me. I will give it my best, my 100%. Wish me luck!
