The power of rest days

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

So yesterday I took the morning off because I had a late date night on Tuesday.  That rest day is pure magic, because I had so much incredible energy throughout this morning (well, maybe it was the Cytolean and SuperPump combo, but I’d rather attribute it to my awesomeness)!  I did a double workout of torture tempo tricep/back and legs since the likelihood of camping tomorrow and Saturday are high (*insert anti-rain dance here*), followed by some hillwork on the stationary bike where I had a ‘deep’ conversation with my friend on what would I rather be, a ninja or a pirate (Eh?  Is that something that’s even debate-able?  Who wouldn’t choose ninja?!).

I’m definitely on A.D.D. overdrive since I can’t wait for this weekend’s festivities of camping and skydiving!  I’m leaving tonight (and no, VTDad, I will not commit camping blasphemy and bring my laptop! ;) ), but I’ll try to write as soon as I get back from sky diving!  And if I don’t, uh, DanicaX, you can inherit all my SuperPump. :)

Train hard and behave, everyone, I’ll miss you!! xo

I can lift (a wee bit) more!!

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

I bumped up weights doing torture tempo bicep/chest!!  Well, okay, it still sorta stayed the same doing Trixter’s plan (though I DID the last two sets at higher weights!), but I also stepped outside of his plan and ‘tried out’ a set of previous exercises (regular tempo) I did and I was able to bump weights with those exercises (i.e., hammer curls, chest press, etc) from the pre-plan era!!  I was very excited-like, thanks Coach! :)   I should really start tracking this stuff on the workout tracker since charts and graphs dazzle me, but then I get so A.D.D. about it… like I’ll start the template and then think, "oh, I haven’t caught up with this friend’s blog!" or something.  I do that with TV shows, too… I’ll watch something then when it’s commercial I’ll flip somewhere else and remember the previous show 20 minutes later (that, or I’ll "rest my eyes" and conk out), thus missing the ending… argh!  Ah, senility and narcolepsy…

I’m also starting to get ‘props’ in the weight room from the regulars since they pretty much know me as a cardio junkie.  I admit that I did talk a bit too much in between sets today because I’m so goshdarn congenial ;) , but I can’t help it - I don’t think I could ever look hardcore since I smile at everyone, even the equipment.  Damn my sunny disposition!

Diet was pretty good yesterday - cottage cheese/egg whites/a dash of sunflower seeds for meal 1, a protein shake and apple for meal 2, tilapia and veggies with a tiny bit of whole wheat couscous and sunflower seeds for meal 3, protein bar and apple for meal 4, egg white omelette with veggies for meal 5, and a protein shake for meal 6.  I would someday like to wean myself off protein bars (Promax Cookies and Cream… yums), but I figured it was at least better than my usual 2:30 p.m. Snickers and/or Kit Kat (Oh man, I have the funniest Kit Kat story, but even I have my limits on what I post).  Baby steps, baby steps… I’m going to try this diet for the whole week in order to get myself accustomed to eating like that, and will attempt to juggle in new meals next week.

You can’t even MAKE this up!

So for about a month, one of my friends had this bump on his forehead that, over time, turned into this disgusting boil the size of the nurse’s fetus on ‘South Park.’  This boil got so disgustingly huge that he had to go to the doc’s to get it removed/deflated and they took the contents to examine it.  Well, he got the results and it seems like there was just a bunch of pus and an insect leg.

My friend thought, "WTF?  Did something bite me and get trapped in my skin or something?"  So my friend marinated on it, and it finally occurred to him what happened.  See, my friend is an avid motorcyclist who doesn’t like to keep his helmet face thingy on - he leaves it up and uses sunglasses because he "likes to feel the breeze on his face."  Well on one of his jaunts, he was going super fast when SPLAT! - this bug totally got smashed on his sunglasses.  He wiped off this heinous green goop of a corpse off of him, but he was going SO fast and the bug hit him SO forcefully that when the bug splatted - the bug’s leg got lodged into his skin!!  Since he didn’t think much about it, the leg just sat there in his skin and over time it got so infected that the boil formed!!

I, of course, expressed my condolences by laughing maniacally, because seriously - what are the freakin odds?!?  Hee, forget Train X goes at 30 mph while Car Y goes 20 mph… teach THAT equation to third graders in order to make those concepts stick! ;)

Had a pretty sluggish workout today (run/bike day with light legs weights) because I stayed up late watching my babydaddy Dane Cook’s stand up special.  That man is HI-larious… now that is true laughterbation in its highest form… such a turn-on!    Plus, all the laughing is a great ab workout!

Updated pics and planning

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

So I was getting ready for my morning workout today when I caught a glimpse in the mirror and thought, "Oh my goodness, my bra strap squish isn’t as noticeable in the back (one of the reasons why I won’t wear a tank top at the gym)!"  So, I took some updated pics… I don’t see a whole lot of changes since 1/7, but I figured this could be cool down the line to see the progression… kinda like a flip book. :)

Tricep/back regular tempo workout today, followed by a 5 mile run.  I’m also going to the store right after to pick up some clean foods and plan out not only my workouts (which I love), but also my meals (which is a definite chore).  Let’s see if this action helps troubleshoot the diet aspect.  And, thanks again, for the uplifting messages I received when I was definitely all mopey-pants about the diet thing.  You guys absolutely rock and I definitely couldn’t do this without you!

Okay, enough typing, time to do.  Have a great Sunday, peeps!

Milkshake!

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Hee, so why did Trixter’s latest post stating that my writing amuses him remind me of this Family Guy episode? :)

Speaking of, he challenged me to a 180 lb. leg press using the 6-0-6 tempo and I met it last night!!  Granted, it was the second set and I’m pretty sure the phrase ‘devil spawn’ slipped through my mouth, but it was done nonetheless. :)   I also did the regular tempo for chest/bi/shoulders today, and thought, "oh, my legs are still on fire from last night, why don’t I go for a run?!"  Yeah… that lasted all of 2 miles before it felt as if my calves were being ripped off my bones.  So, I hobbled away and called it a session.

It’s been around 3 weeks since I’ve become more diligent with this whole process (2 using the torture tempo method), and I will ashamedly admit - my eating is still pretty whack.  I could bring up work stress or the fact that dating increases alcohol consumption, but overall - a lot of it is my weak will power and impulsive behavior to ‘just eat it.’  I read somewhere (grr, I wish I remembered the guy’s blog, it was really good!), that you have to master the diet aspect in order to truly see results.  And sure, I’m starting to see a difference in my arms, but I know a lot of the layer of fat is because I’m not hitting my goals of clean eating.  I’ll definitely tell you, though - seeing the visual progression of BryanGee, DaretoSoar, and Maddi are truly inspiring!  So… argh, I just gotta freakin do it already and put my money where my mouth is (instead of junkie food!).

Thanks the Gods It’s Friday!

Friday, January 25th, 2008

Hee, I used to have a German boss that used to say that as soon as she stepped in on Fridays… she was a stern woman, but definitely had her cute moments.

So yesterday’s torture tempo back/tricep workout was awesome, though I’m not feeling as sore as I did the first week… maybe I need to step it up?   My arms were definitely shaking by the 10th-12th rep, but sometimes, I don’t know if I’m pushing myself enough.  What are some good indicators?  What did drag was my 5 mile run afterwards, probably because it was the treadmill and because all I had the night before was a salad (usually if I know I’m gonna run, I eat some brown rice or whole wheat couscous for the previous dinner).  So, I gotta put some DaretoSoar action into it and plan for the week (seriously, this blew me away - so meticulous!).

Kind of a mellow day - I’m all sorts of congested, and not much is planned for this weekend since Mother Nature is not putting out (i.e., it’s gonna rain).  I’m definitely psyched about next weekend, though, since I’m most likely going camping at Joshua Tree or Death Valley with this one guy I’ve been seeing (trying not to jinx it, but things are going well) and then sky diving Sunday!!  So I’m like a little kid waiting for Christmas to come. :)

Tonight is tempo torture leg day - because nothing screams hip and cool like working out on a Friday night! :)

GJ and Trixter speak the truth!

Wednesday, January 23rd, 2008

So the power couple is right - the second round of ‘tempo torture’ was easier than the first… okay, not easier, but less traumatic!  I was going to make today my rest day but decided to go to the gym, anyway (waits by the mailbox for my gold star) since working out in the morning always "sedates" me for the day, making me a calm and amicable co-worker and employee rather than psychob!tchfromhell ™.

So today I did the chest/bicep/shoulder routine and I didn’t shake as much by the 12th rep!  I even managed to upgrade weights for all the exercises (well, like a 5 pound increase… total…), and I’m pretty sure I did full tempo counts for everything (especially the 6-0-6 count for the flies… brutal!).  Perhaps it was also the SP, but regardless - I was stoked!!

I mean, my bod is still in perpetual pain and soreness, but still… awesome!!  I will admit, though, there is a strong possibility that I might drop down my leg workouts to one day (sorry, Trixter)… I still want to keep the tempo torture workout, but replace the regular tempo legs day for an additional run day.  I’m friends with a lot of running peeps and with all the spring events popping up, I’m fiending to do some.  Plus, with the days getting longer, this chickie needs her outdoor runs… it’s a very calm, introspective, spiritual time for me.  So with that, Namaste mofo’s! ;)

Indirect CW Time!

Monday, January 21st, 2008
Okay, so other than being anointed a Bond Girl by BodyAuditor and the great messages on the new avi (awesome, thanks everyone!), I had a great CW moment today that wasn’t even all about me.  My friend met this guy a couple of weeks ago, and though she has expressed her disinterest, he still calls her incessantly.  Most notable of calls was when he left a message early morn to let her know that there’s frost on her car window, so to be sure to wipe it down before she drives to work.  Now, I don’t have the credentials of a forensic psychologist, per se, but I’m confident I’ve logged at least 300 hours of field study (i.e., avidly watch Forensic Files/Most Evil/New Detectives, dated psychopaths, etc.) to recognize deviant behavior and this creepo was definitely a bit off.

So, I accompanied her today for a bit at her pad because she’s starting to feel a little creeped out (I’m like a chihuahua - feisty!  And, I shiver a lot lol).  She opened the door and - WOW!!  She had lost a LOT of weight and looked uber-fit!!  I coo’ed very excitedly about how phenomenal she looked before slapping that booty of hers.  Anyway, she was beaming and - CW moment - she said I motivated her to pick up running and the lifting class at her gym, so she owed a lot of her success to me!  Needless to say, I, in turn, beamed, and it was a pretty glorious moment.  I absolutely love what this lifestyle has done for me, and I’m thrilled that I was not only able to convey this to someone else, but that she loves it equally as much, too!

I’m still a little worried for her, but she’s confident that he’ll eventually get the hint (hello, like she said she no longer wants to see him and he says, “well, I’ll give you two weeks to think about it…” - WTF!?).  I hope so! :/

New lover!

Monday, January 21st, 2008

What up, home skillets… so I have a new lover!  His name is SuperPump, and he’s awesome :)   A bunch of people on here that I admire have praised it, and I gotta agree with them - it gave me tons of energy and focus yesterday (Day 2 (tri/shoulders/back) workout, no torture tempo but still controlled counts) and today (supposed to be Day 3 leg day but did abs/core and an extra bonus cardio day… doing legs tomorrow, and resting Wednesday due to a long workday).  So - awesome!

Not much else to report - I definitely still hear faint Trixter taunting laughter in the background whenever I try to move my arms (especially my triceps, which is exciting because it’s never felt this sore before… I definitely love the skull crusher/pullover combo :) ).  I’ve also stayed pretty mellow and by my lonesome this past weekend, so I’m pretty sure I overcame getting sick.  Here’s hoping!

Dodging the flu/cold

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

So, you know the achiness isn’t good when you fear going to sleep/taking a nap… why?  Because you get so stiff and sore when you first wake up!  Whatever, even though I b!tch, I like it. ;)   Today’s workout was the same as Day 1 though no torture tempos, and most weights increased slightly (i.e., barbell for biceps was 30 rather than 25).  It admittedly sucked today since I think I think I’m coming down with the flu/cold (no, Disturbed, I’m not down with this sickness!) that’s going around my work, so I didn’t even do cardio afterwards (not like I could because my legs feel like they’ve been hit by a two by four, especially in the calves and buttock region, but that’s beside the point).  Looks like the weekend will consist of work out, troll this site, try to sleep off the cold/flu, grumble about waking up and walking around, contemplate getting Depends to avoid walking to the bathroom from all the fluids I’m consuming, rinse, repeat.

On a brighter note, I put my deposit down for sky diving!  The girl on the phone was really hyper in the crackhead sense (even for a spaz like me), so I hope I’m not jumping tandem with her. :)
