changing old habits

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

partied a little too much last night for the man’s birthday, taste testing the ice cream cake i bought him and drinking three shots of tequila (casa nobel… drool).  the good thing is that he loved his present (a paella kit since he loves to cook and i love to eat his cooking!  and of course, me ;) ), the bad is that i’m super groggy today.  plus, i admittedly gorged myself at the breakfast potluck at work today… bad pixi, bad!

but, instead of gorging for the rest of the day and ’starting over’ tomorrow, which is a typical excuse/routine i get into, i decided that i still have a good half-day to make it up with eating better and cleaner.  so, i’m gonna do that.

rest day today, though - i hate going to the gym in the afternoons since it’s too crowded, plus my ankle is getting all creaky again which i’m guessing is from the bike and spin classes?  so i think for the next couple of days i’ll mostly do weights and non-weight-bearing cardio like biking on a low resistance.  it’s frustrating because i love the types of cardio where it feels like my heart’s going to explode (i.e. running, revolving stairs, etc.), but i also want this ankle injury to friggin heal already.

2nd week went decidedly better

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

so though 2nd week had a slow start, it went decidedly better and i lost 2-3 pounds (since my weight fluctuates a bit).  sweet!

i definitely think a lot of it had to do with my diet since, apparently, eating 500-600 extra empty calories will make you gain weight. ;)   deep down, i obviously know this, but when i ran, i could just… run it off.  and though it took getting to my "unacceptable top off" weight (125), i realize that a lot of this is 70% diet.  so even though i’m the biggest cookie monster this side of the mississippi, i just really have to make a more conscious, deliberate effort to control my sweet tooth.  it’s challenging, but i can do it.

i also made (small) gains at the gym.  though i still haven’t meandered to the intimidating free weights section yet, i have challenged myself with the stationary machines.  i usually do around 4 sets of 12 hitting each main body part, but instead of doing 30 for biceps i’d try to do 35, instead of 65 for the lat pulldowns i’d try 70, instead of 40 for the butt kickback machines i’d do 50, etc.  surprising, i was okay when i tried it out (geminijedi’s routine definitely inspired me, thanks chick!), so at least i have another thing to preoccupy me (besides biking) while my stupid ankle heals.  i couldn’t do a set of 12 with heavier weights (more like 2 sets of 10 and then 2 sets of 12 with my "normal" weights), but it’s a good thing to work up to (and build up to more and more weights).  honestly, i’ve never been a big fan of weights - cardio comes way more easily to me since i wake up thinking, "yes, i GET to run now!"  but knowing that some chicks out there aren’t a big fan either but do it because they’re dedicated and disciplined, makes it a little more bearable.

for next week, i think i might start logging all my exercises/weights/reps/etc.  the only real temptation i have diet-wise is tomorrow night since it’s the man’s birthday.  i’ll try to stay away from the cake, but when it comes to the tequila… i often succumb to his peer pressure. :)

and hey, i figured out how to change the colors of my blog!  it’s a tad streetwalker, but i love red.

Weekend prep

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

so i’ve been reading the other blogs around here (men and women) and i am just completely blown away…. everyone is so tough!  i picked up a few mental strategies about sacrifice and dedication (my biggest being sweets since i’m such a freakin cookie monster… it was great when i was logging 40 or so miles a week, not so much these days), i’ve gone to the groceries and picked up cleaner foods (more tuna and egg whites since i don’t eat chicken, pork, or beef), and i’m going to ask my boy-toy (who used to be a personal trainer) to give me specific weight workouts on what to do each day for the next few weeks.  he’s been getting on me about doing more upper body, strengthening my legs and ankles so my injury will heal up quicker, etc., so i’m sure he’ll be stoked to help me.

i’m wondering what to do cardio-wise, since i LOVE cardio and usually go at it anywhere from 1-4 hours (running and otherwise).  i can’t help it - after that 1-2 hour mark, i feel all tough and powerful (like when your blood, brain, and nerves just feel all explosive and pounding inside you in a good way)…. so i guess i just have to transfer those feelings into weight training.  i’m also wondering what to do supplements-wise… a lot of women use that no-explode stuff, so i guess i have to look into it more.

today i did upper body weights and then spin class… i felt kind of tired because i went to a friend’s gathering last night (oh yeah!  tequila and newcastles - gotta sacrifice those, too… argh), but at least i did something today.  enough babbling - time to read more blogs and articles.

So… not really sure how to get started with working out with weights.  I plan on checking out what other chicks are doing and hopefully learning a lot of new things!
