A question for the ladies…
Fellas you might want to avert your eyes from this one as we will be discussing monthly water weight gain….
Ladies, you know what I am talking about…those 2-7 pounds of water weight we all put on right before and during our period….the weight that hides those pretty muscles we have been working so hard to get to SHOW!! This kills me…I on average put on at least 5-6 pounds of water right before my period…any of you ladies out there got a secret for prevention?? If ya do….send it my way because I’m going out of my mind with it!! Or if you know of something that makes a girl shed that water faster…I’m all over it…share the love…until then just call me Squishy…

I don’t have that problem, thank God. I do have the tendency to kill anyone that works on my nerves though.
I have backpains and my breasts get sore(guys will LOVE this post I tell you) When I eat certain foods it get worse. So I avoid them the week before my period.
You should try eating natural diuretic foods. Celery, parsley, asparagus… and drink extra water. Ohh and try to use less salt/condiments in your food.

LoL.. I know what your talking about! I typically ALSO gain about 5-6 lbs the day before or first day of my cycle.. I know its so annoying.. but I think its inevitable though. When I jump on the scale that morning and am shocked to wonder how I gained so much over night, it makes me that much quicker to get outside and run it off. Thats my only suggestion, but I also think that when I workout hard during this week, I find it easier to lose even more than just the water weight easier .. and it alleviates the cramps alot!

That definitely gets on my LAST nerves!! I drink herbal teas like fennel or dandelion which are mild diuretics they help a little and are good for digestion too.

wow.. funny.. I mentioned this in my "Dark tales from atop the scale" blog a few weeks ago.. you can manipulate water weight in many ways…but this one is hormonal.. so, i guess you just deal with it and know it goes away in a few days.
Did u ever try doing protein days during this "special" period?… lol, no pun intended
I wonder if increasing lean protein by 25% while trying to get your carbs from only fibrous carbs can offset this water gain…
do u know?

drink black tea!!! it works wonders, and plenty of water

I think we tend to crave carbs right before, which can explain, in part, why we hold more water during that time…avoid giving into cravings, drink more water~

I get majorly bloated and hold lots of water as well..my naturopath suggested herbal teas + drinking lots of water…not sure black tea will help thou [def won’t if you add milk]…I think caffeine can increase some symptoms associated with your period.

Oh yeah I totally agree with you TRazz about the cravings for carbs!! I hate that! hmmm… actually I think it’s cravings for just about everything! Drinking more water doesn’t help me much thou:(

I too gain anywhere from 2-5 lbs for pretty much the whole week before my period…but a friend of mine get REALLY bloated all over (like her fingers even swell). She takes water pills to get back down to normal. Maybe it would help you too.

In Russia they use a natural diuretic, cider vinegar. I think you can find it in regular grocery stores under the name Apple Cider Vinegar. Use 2 Tbs in 1 cup of water. It’s really nasty, but effective.

There are a lot of "have you tried" type of advice, but you are treating the symptom. Why not treat the cause. With the exception of wanting to get pregnant there is really no need to ovulate and therefore mensturate. Swap your birth control to one that ceases ovulation. Then the cause has been treated and there are no more symptoms, easy hey.

I have started taking dandelion root as a diuretic. I take the pills, but some drink the tea… I also take the evening primrose, to help with the moodiness… It hasn’t really helped in the tenderness area… OUCH…

my fiancee is always complaining about this. but aside from holding water and not being as thin for a week, is there anything really bad about it or is it mainly that ladies would prefer to fit into ALL their jeans ALL the time?
November 9, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Ok it’s definitely NOT about fitting in the damn jeans everyday it’s about how we are feeling during this time and can I say it ladies? WE FEEL LIKE CRAP!!! I know that at that time of the month I feel like a big fat beached whale and Oh by the way i believe in reincarnation, I’m coming back as a man and all men in this life will be coming back as women! Ha! Then they can find out what it’s really like to bleed and bitch! Thanks for letting me rant!:)

I have the same problem and I find that eating lots of strawberries before my period and taking an epsom salt bath every night during my period really helps. I am not sure if there is any scientific back-up to these methods, but its worth a try.
