A Strength Athlete Approach to Training

As my adventure into weight training has progressed my goals have begun to shift from asthetics to developing a better level of strength on core powerlifts. Training with a focus more on strength means taking a different approach from the standard bodybuilders style of weight training, the 4-6 day a week lifting no longer becomes feasible.
I did quite a bit of reading on the subject. One of the best books I came across was "Practical Programming for Strength Training" by Mark Rippetoe and Lon Kilgore, the authors of Starting Strength. It is very thurough in describing different programs for various levels and goals. From this I began to create my new 3 day split which includes a Squat, Pull, and Press each workout.

Good luck with it! I started a strength program, too. I started it hoping it’ll help me get stronger so that I can focus on changing the shape of my muscles in a few weeks, but I’ve been getting great shaping results with it besides gaining strength!
