2008 NPC Masters Nationals Report!

I placed 3rd and am very happy. I’m grateful for the support I had there and here on this site. I’m already planning for next year.

There was no dought I had the best condition and symmetry in the group, yet it takes more then that to win. I lacked the size I needed to seal the deal. Several of the winners, that placed above me and below me said I placed too low, yet, I’m grateful and pleased as hell for the placement and the experience.

I had many fiends there to compete and one placed first in his weight class and the others all placed! It was great!

As usual, Judy was the perfect spouse and support to and for me. Thank God for that woman! THANK GOD! She was diagnosed with Breast cancer 3 yrs and 2 mths ago. I had just chose to compete. During her trial, she still encouraged me to train and compete. How AMAZING is that! Blessed man I am!

My posing routine killed the audience, and several of the judges HIGH FIVED each other after my performance. It was fun and the judges will never forget me! As I was going to my room, many come up to me to tell me how great I was, and at dinner I had many people come up to me and say I was the high light of the night! Icon_redfaceThat was fun for sure. Just as soon as I get the DVD I will post it on youtube.

According To Statistics, 97% Of You Will Fail! Will You!

In the sport of Bodybuilding, it is said that 70% is genetics when it comes to having the kind of body to compete successfully. One can have size, definition, stratified and vascular muscles, have personality and the classic looks of a leading movie star, and yet if you lack “symmetry”, you will always struggle to succeed in the sport of competitive bodybuilding. What is symmetry? It means “BALANCE.” 

So, if you lack the “symmetry” or “Balance,” do you give up and stand at the sideline, and let your dreams fade away like “Dust in the Wind”?

NO! You humble yourself! Let go of pride! You train hard developing hard sinewy muscle. You study the masters that have gone before. You practice posing for hours and hours perfecting every move. One posing trainer told me that “posing is mostly smoke and mirrors.” It’s like a magician doing “slight of hand” expressing the positive and doing suttle moves to make the weak parts of the body appear better then they are.

You need to be humble so you can be teachable and learn or you will be humbled, and then it is a matter of choice! Do you humble yourself and continue to strive and improve? Or quit!

When you look at my slogan it says, “Consistency with intensity brings DENSITY!”

When you first look at my mantra, you most likely think that I’m talking about the “physical” part of the body, yet actually that is the last part of what I mean. That mantra starts with the “Spiritual,” part of our life, then “Mental,” then “Emotional,” and finally the “Physical body,” in that order.

The Spiritual body is the “foundation” of our life, then we educate ourselves by mentally working and studying, taking in as much knowledge as possible. Then we ask ourselves, “How does that feel? Does it work for me?” Then we act on it, and DO IT all with, “Consistency and Intensity, and that will give us the, Density we are striving for Spiritually, Mentally, Emotionally, and finally Physically.

I compete mostly because I’m an obsessive compulsive. I am driven in every aspect of my life by OCD. It that a bad thing? Not if I keep balanced by keeping my mantra balanced with keeping the Spiritual balanced with the Mental, and the Mental balanced with the Emotional, and finally I can go at it Physically and train like hell. If I get one of the four parts of my body outta balanced, then the physical part will fail.

OK, the “Smoke and Mirrors?” That is acting as if, Faith if you will! You create the dream and live it, weather it materializes is up to you. If you believe you will succeed, then you will. If you believe you will fail…. then that will be you destiny.

The reason why I’m giving this little sermon, is because people ask me all the time, “What can I to to change?” “I want to look more like you!” The key to change isn’t just changing physical habits! One must change all aspects of their lives starting with the foundation, not the roof!

You are miserably fat and, or outta shape not because you’re doing something physically wrong creating bad habits! That is just the symptom of an inner struggle that needs to change first before you change the Physical body. That is why 97% of all people who go on diets and or exercise programs fail. They attack the symptom, not the problem. Start with the foundation first then work yourself up to the roof.

Where is your Consistency? Where is your Intensity? If you are outta balanced, and you have put the Physical before the Mental, Emotional, and most important, the Spiritual part of you life, then you are doomed to be one of the 97% who will fail to change your physical body. ed

A Bodybuilder Is Like a Pregnant Worman!

While Ron, another master BB friend, and I were in an elevator at the Shilo Inn Hotel, leaving after registration and weigh ins at for the Oregon BB Comp. A man and two ladies about my age, stepped into the elevator from another floor.

The 3 of them started to ask questions about BB and working out! “How many hours a day would I have to spend in the gym to look like you,” one lady asked? “Oh bout 40 to 60 mins, 4 to 6 days a week,” I said.

“Is that all” the other lady said, and just then I felt two hands going up and down my left shoulder and then squeezing my biceps!

I guess my face went into wide eyed shock and the elevator doors opened and they got out!

I guess I looked a little out of sorts, cause Ron burst out laughing and said the look on my face was priceless! He has been telling everyone we know the “elevator story” for the last 3 days!

I asked Ron what she looked like as she was stroking my shoulder and arm? He said, “She looked like she was loving it! LOL LOL LOL!!!”

OOOOooooooo! I want a shower!

Just a few days before that I was in the WinCo shopping for sweet potato’s and rice cakes. They were for the carb bulking to come for the competition. When at the check out stand the checker lady was staring at me, BTW I was in one of my superman string tanks, and shorts fresh from the gym, when she said,

“My husband would look just like you if he lifted weights!” “That’s right he would!” said the gal that was helping her check the groceries.

Just then the checker gal reached across and rubbled her hand across my chest and said, “Wow that’s so big!”, and just then the other gal started squeezing my biceps and said, “So how big are those arms?” in an inquisitive voice.

PEOPLE! I’M A FIFTYTHREE YEAR OLD MAN! OLD ENOUGH TO BE THESE GIRLS DADDY! I’VE NEVER EVER SPOKE TO AND MET THESE GALS!

Well after telling my sweetheart Mrs. Oldsup bout these gals, she said, “Well that’s what happens when you’re pregnant! When your tummy is sticking out their are people, and yes some are total strangers, feel perfectly justified to reach out, rub and pat your tummy, then start talking to you as if your were best of friends! Sounds like the same thing to me!” she said!

I knew it wasn’t them coming on to me cause it wasn’t that sort of thing, and even tho I’m in shape, the beard and hair is white, and the face is sagging just a bit! Besides, I may be up there, yet I still know what coming onto feels like! This wasn’t it!

Mrs Oldsup just smiled and said, “It could be worse? They could be rubbing and patting your TUMMY! LOL!!!! ed

Do You Train, or Just Work Out?

You may or my not have noticed, I never say, "I workout"…..What I do is, "TRAIN!"

When most people go to the gym, what almost everyone says they are doing is, "working out". Yet, most, 97% to be exact, will fail at in their exercise and diet program in one year or less.

When you talk to someone who "trains" they have a goal in mind, like to "hit a lift" to improve in strength and virility. Some to get those Brad Pitt abs. Some to compete in BBing or power lifting competitions. There are many other pursuits that are rewarding and challenging for the BBer, like cycling, triathlons, marathons, even a better golf game and etc..

My goal now, for example, it to compete in 2008 NPC Masters Nationals BBing competition and win my class! There are many sub goals in place to reach that goal by a certain time to get to my ultimate goal. Therefore, "I’m in training." I have "trainers" that "trains" me. I have a "training" partner with similar goals!

What I have noticed over the years as I attend many of the same gyms from Oregon, Washington, Alaska, and other major cities foreign and domestic, that I frequent, I see many of the same people, some have improved, some maintained, yet most are newbies that will be gone the next time I visit, never to return again.

At least twice a week or more, someone will come up to me and ask, "How can I lose weight" or "I want to look like you!" Or "get more muscles, but not big like you! Just toned up." or "I wanna lose my belly, get fit, bla, bla, bla…" They are almost always short term lifters. Why? IMO, they come to "just work out." No goals, no vision of what that means. It is more than "just working out," it is a goal, and vision of what you want to accomplish. Therefore, they fail.

I rarely give them advice anymore to the people that approach me because when I do, 98% of them will not put forth the "intensity", or "consistency" or diet to succeed. They come to the gym to "just work out." They lack "intensity and consistency," with no idea of how to achieve the goals they seek. They come to "workout" and "train" for nothing.

Does a runner talk about his or her "working out" for a race, or do the "train" for a race. Do skiers "work out" or train? Do ball players go to "workout" camps or "training" camps? They have coaches and trainers, that train them.

Now, I’m not saying anything is wrong with "working out." I just feel to me, it means two different things, one has a strong commitment to a goal, a vision, and the other terminology rarely does. It just hangs there. To me, it is more than semantics!

So, the question is….. "Do you train?" Or, "Just work out?" ed

Genetics YES! YET, hard work really pays off!

The other day, and this has happened many times before mind you, I was in the gym dressing room stripping down to train, when a couple of 40ish out of shape guys were getting dressed to leave. Now they weren’t big fat slobs mind you, just the average otta shape Joes. 

They were obviously friends by the way their conversation was going. Anyway, one of them eye balled me in my skivvies and said jokingly, yet with some sarcasm to his voice, “They shouldn’t let guys like that show off like that! It make the rest of us feel inferior! LOL”

Of course with a smile on my face and a subdued voice I said, ” it took a lot of time and work to get this body boys.”

“I think genetics played a big part in the way you are!” and here came the best part! “You probably don’t even have an idea what it’s like to be like us.” He said.

As most of you know, if you look at my progress pics on my bodyspace, you can see the before pic of me April 2002 at age 47. Well I carry that pic with me in my wallet to remind me where I came from. (and for moments like this, I must admit! lol.)

So I took out my wallet and said, ” How old are you guys?” “44 and 43″ then I said pulling out the pic from my wallet, ” this is me, almost 5 yrs ago at 47.”

“NO WAY! That’s your dad or older brother. That’s not you!” Then they looked closer and “DAMN! That is you!”

Then I said with a smile, “Genetics fellas, had nothing to do with this” as I pointed to my six pack!

The point friends, you can make all the excuses you want, yet it is the commitment to the work, the discipline to the diet, and the education, good training that changes lives.

Oh yes there are those genetic GODS that are blessed with amazing bodies, yet most of us will forever have to train with, Consistency, Intensity to get Density. ed

Gotta Train Like Hell!

I get asked almost everyday one of these questions:

“What supplements should I take?” or “What kind of diet” or “What can I do” or, and this is one I get a lot, “should I take whey” ?

Then I say:

“First, YOU ‘VE GOTTA TRAIN LIKE HELL! You gotta show up to getter done. Push and pull like your life depended on it! 5 days a week.”

It doesn’t matter much what you eat or what you take if you don’t train with intensity!

Do sups give you an edge? Will a good diet fuel the body to its potential? You bet!

YET! It all ends up in the toilet WASTED, unless you train like hell!

Who is Ol Supe? What Makes Him Tick?

I am defined as an obsessive compulsive. I just don’t do anything halfway or casually. It has been a wonderful trait that has given me the will to do amazing things in my life that others have not the will or desire to do. I have traveled, I have made money, a wall full of awards and acclimation’s because of it. It has also….. been my trial and burden. Is it genetic or socially conditioned? I think some of both. 

It took me 40 yrs to grow up. What does that mean? It means to bring balance into my life. It means to accept my OC in a way I can use to keep me more open the the concerns and desires of others and less on myself. Have I made it there? LOL! No, yet at least I’m aware of it and strive to “do” better! Still at it!

I lived my life in extremes and was very unhappy most of the time. I was critical and fearful of others, and mostly myself.

When I chose to change the direction of my life and move to the future, I had to reflect upon the past. It was not an easy thing to do as my childhood was rot with daily beatings and the stealing of innocence of a child by nightly abuse from those that should have know better. The purging was excruciating, yet necessary to move into the future. It was a rebirth of my life mentally, emotionally, physically and mostly spiritually. The healing then began.

Those days are long gone. The amazing thing about my new perspective of myself is, now that I love myself, it has given me the capacity to love others! I hate or despise no one anymore, not even the perpetrators of my childhood.

It has been an emotionally wonderful experience to finely see others without fear of them. As a result, I fell in love with my wife all over again. I have made true friends that mean the world to me. Something that I am truly thankful for is, I became the dad I wanted to be and love all my kids more than the world and they love me. I thank God for all these things.

I’m bodybuilding and competing in the Masters division in the fall of my life. IT HAS A WONDERFUL SPORT that has taught me so much about myself!

I have wonderful friendships because of BBing, and it helps to keep me focused in many other levels of my life besides my body as well. My trainers mean so much to me. I could never thank them enough!

My dreams are coming true because of their trust an confidence in me. Thanks Sean. Mostly though, Brandon, a young man with a heart unusually kind and as big as his chest, and that’s effen huge 56″, has made all the difference! I don’t understand quite how or why he tolerates me, yet he has for more than 3yrs, and I love him like a son.

My goal this year is to go to Pittsburgh PA and give notice to the NPC Masters Nationals the I am here! My time has come!

OK my friends, what is this all bout. Well a little bearing of my soul. A little of who I am, and a little of what I’m becoming.
