Bodybuilding and subjectiveness

How many times have you gone to a show and said: WTF are the judges looking at? Obviously not the same stage I am. I recently read in someones journal where people wrote about this guy they saw compete this past weekend, they said:

He looked much better conditioned than the other people in his class but took a lower placing.

After reading this and falling victim to it myself in the past, I wonder if I should bust my ass and set foot on stage again. My wife says "Think positive and give it your all for next year as planned. You never know it could be your best year yet."

Most likely I will go through with it and do the Northern Kentucky as planned in 2009.

You wrote "He looked much better conditioned than the other people in his class but took a lower placing."

That can be crazy-making on the face of it, but this is why bodybuilding is such a subjective sport. It’s like any art from my perspective - there’s no right or wrong. It’s all opinion.

I’d rather see someone win a contest who looks good than a skinny un-muscled type win based on the fact that he can diet harder than the next guy.

Fortunately for you, you have a bodybuilder’s physique and belong on the stage.

Lenda Murray said that bodybuilding *chose* her. She had the big quads and delts and took it to another level.

Eddie Robinson said that he became a bodybuilder because he already looked like a bodybuilder.

Ronnie Coleman was given a free gym membership to Metro because he was a beast already.

Some people have it automatically while others have to work for it. And yet others fall in between. I’d say you have what it takes to do well in most any competition (you’re not Mr. Olympia level yet, sorry ;) ).

But should you base your actions on some judges? On how they might subjectively whatever? No. It’s just their opinion.

Step on that stage to show what you’ve accomplished. Get up their to make your family and friends proud, of course, but do it for you and without any question about any judge.

Judges can be great people, but they’ll always be human. Prone to making mistakes or more likely just having a different opinion than others.

Anyway, long-winded here, but to answer your question: Yeah, been there done that. What was that judge thinking? Who does that competitor know or who’s he or she related to? You never know. It’s mind boggling at times.

Regardless, I’m encouraging you to kick some at the Northern Kentucky, Carl.
