ALS

Monday, February 11th, 2008

If we did the things we are capable of, we would astound ourselves.
“Thomas Edison”
How many of us take our bodies for granted? How many can say that they have used theirs to its full potential? How many people say, “I’ll start exercising tomorrow”, but never get around to it?
I was guilty of this as well. Then I became more aware of a disease called ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). I was inspired by the fact that my body has the capability to have voluntary movement. So I registered for an event that is put on by a local non profit group. This event is a 20 km race that consists of trail running, mountain biking and kayaking. www.alsadventure.com
All these things I had little or no experience doing. I hadn’t really ran since high school gym class, hadn’t ridden a bike since I was 12 and don’t remember the last time I tried to paddle a boat. But with all the support and help from everyone I was able to complete my training and raise enough money to participate in this event. The people whom I met by doing this were a great inspiration to life. Many of them had been personally touched by ALS, whether it was a family member or a friend. It is much more common than I knew.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s disease,” is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
I have registered again to participate in the ALS Adventure Race. This is my 2nd year, and plan on using last years experience to my advantage. I am starting my training and fund raising early. I am going to better last years time of 2hours 36min., by at least 10minutes. All the support I you can give, both motivational and financial is needed and appreciated.
I have set up a page to keep you all informed of all my training and fund raising progress.

I hope this is able to inspire you to get out there and be active.
Thank you.
Morgan.

Dodgeball

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

The move went increadibly well! I am now a proud resident of Squamish B.C.

It is the outdoor recreation capital of western Canada. That should help keep me motivated on my transformation. We woke up on Saturday morning looking out our bedroom window at the Squamish Chief (google it), with 2 bald eagles soaring all around. It doesn’t get any better. Tonight I have my first Dodgeball game. I am so pumped!

Happy Thanks giving to all my Yankee friends!!! Today I had my first group Martial Arts class. Wow, I felt like the fat clumsy guy. Then I got my ass kicked by some old guy. It was awesome (very humbling). 5 min in I felt like I was gonna vomit. It was an increadible work out. I always order Tia food from the place right next door to it. So I decided to stop in and talk to them the other day, He said I could have 2 weeks free trial, private lessons and everthing. I was sold, I never turn dow a good deal. I have had 1 private lesson and 1 group lesson. I now realize that I need to continue with it, good deal or not. I can definetly see the advantages to this kind of training. Balance, cooridination, agility!

1 YEAR NO SMOKING! Man, does it feel good!

Blog Entry

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

It has been way to long since my last entry. I have been holding true to my diet and have been keeping up my activity level. I have not dropped any wieght, but am feeling tighter over all. I think my main problem is the lack of activity during work hours. (damn office job). However I accured a total gym for the office. Like the on Chuck Norris endorsess. I hope that will help me out.

Does anyone have much experience on these machines? I would love to hear any feed back or advice about them.

As of Sunday Sept 16, I have gone 11 months of no smoking. I owe this great success to the decision to change my life style. I know that if I start smoking again, that it will hinder my performance, and set me back from all of my progress and fitness goals.

Thank you all for your inspiration and encouragement!

I have taken a week off doe to sickness. I am feeling well enought o get back on track. It is a good thing that my diet didn’t change while I was sick, That shows some good discipline. ;-)

I have purchased a new heart rate monitor, and have assesed that my resting heart rate is around 70bpm. I should be keeping it between 160-173bpm today during my work out with my trainer.
