I don't go to the gym right now I am just doing what I can with the little equipment that I have. I figure that doing something is better than nothing. I do use pushups, squats and things like that because I do need real life strength. I used to fix mobile offices and I would workout with the axles from the trailers because they were so thick you needed a good grip to grab them. You couldn't wrap your fingers around them like a barbell. I would do military standing presses, curls and other things. I would lift cinder blocks anything I could get a hold of. Right now I am also doing what I can tolerate with a broken rib. I broke it about 2 and a half weeks ago. I am finally getting through a day relatively pain free. I still have to be a little careful though. That is why I am doing my bike riding for cardio. Running is too high impact and hurts my rib. Riding the bike doesn't hurt unless I hit a bump and I try to steer away from those. Thanks for the motivation.

I will let you in on a little secret I have learned that really should not be a secret. I used to workout the same way as you, go to the gym and you end up doing your favorite workouts.... The problem with this is that most gym workouts are pretty much useless on their own. As most exercises are for targeting a specific muscle, then if you try and use your new found strength in a real life situation you will be in the same place you were before. Therefore I would say keep doing sit ups they are very good. Also add in squats, and push ups. these few bodyweight workouts are the basis of most strength. If you are at the gym throw in dips and pull ups also very good bodyweight exercises.
