Supplements and My Diabetes

November 1, 2009

Like anything new introduced in the body I am adding one supplement at a time to note any positive or negative reactions. what works for one person may not work for another.

Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA): Studies show this antioxident, made in the Liver may help muscles utilize glucose more efficiently and assist to lesson pain from diabetic nerve damage.

Chromium: A trace mineral that the body needs to maintain normal blood glucose levels. It helps lower blood glucose levels and improve blood lipids.

Cinnamon: Assists in balancing blood glucose levels.

Fenugreek: Has been used as a natural remedy for high glucose levels. It is high in fiber and may slow the rate at which carbs are broken down. It also helps the body utilize glucose better.

Garlic: Lowers blood sugar by increasing the release of insulin. It is also great antioxident, lowers blood pressure and imroves blood lipids.

American Ginseng: Lowers blood glucose levels by slowing the breakdown of carbs.

Magnesium: This mineral is involved in the proper breakdown of carbs and the action of insulin in the body.

Getting Well Again

October 20, 2009

After a battle with pneumonia, my immune system has been in the toilet! All supplements stopped, workouts stopped and I took a big loss in strength and muscle. The pneumonia led to an internal infection which threw off my sugar levels which led to a kidney infection blah blah blah. After lots of meds and a new med ID bracelet I am finally getting to workout again! As soon as meds are gone it is a body cleanse then full speed ahead! My lungs are not at full capacity yet so I switched my running for the bike. I put in 5 miles yesterday and 8 today. I am also learning how to balance my sugar levels, not something just diabetics should do!! I always thought it was just overweight people who got type 2, FYI it could be you!
