Being more than a recreational athlete is a three sided tier. You have training on one tier, diet on the second, and rest/recovery on the third. That being said, if one of these tiers is in adequate, you run the risk of having the whole structure topple over.

Now, let's assume that you are still trying to reduce your over all weight, by losing fat. In following the K-I-S-S philosophy, that means that your Calorie intake is less than you Calorie expendature every day. Where you get creative, is in the type of calories you consume. Again I am assuming that you are staying away from most fats in general. Leaving Protein and Carbs as the majority of you calorie intake. Following the K-I-S-S philosophy, Protein are the parts of you engine, and carbs are the fuel/nuts and bolts. The idea is to time your eating so that you are only putting 1/4 tank or so at a time, which will force your body to go to your fat stores when you run out of gas before the next feeding. Also you need to remember that it takes more for your body to process fat for fuel than carbs. (Another reason why you maybe feeling slugish)

The second part of the tier is rest and recovery. If you are not getting adequate or enough sleep, it is going to drag you down. I cannot over emphasize rest enough. We don't build our bodies in the gym, we do in the bed.

The third part of the equation is training. You must be consistant in training. Anytype of training on a consistant basis has shown to be a mood elevator, and well as increasing all over body peformance. Even on the days that you do not feel like training, suck it up and go in anyways. 90% of the time 20 minutes after you get there, you will feel better. If this happens to a 10% day where you are just not into it; gut it out. Do what is absolutely necessary for the day, and get the hell out of there.

I hope this helps you somewhat. Anything I can help with; let me know.

See, I'm lucky in that when my mom visits for days at a time, I don't get off track with my diet since she doesn't cook.
