40 years old

When i wrote that i wanted to be in my best shape when i reached 40 its true. It doesnt mean i think i am old or out of shape. By any means. I actually think i am in better shape now than i was when i was 20. Its harder. I can still spare with the young ones, BUT it takes me more time to heal. When i wake up every morning either from doing mma or weights it takes me longer and i ache more.  My feet hurt for a while. My friends ask me why i still do it when i am almost 40. They will never understand. I have been doing this since im 8 years old. I had my first boxing fight when i was 8 1/2. And so forth until i broke my shin in atlantic city in 1998.  And i had to stop.  I have broken my fingers, toes, shins, knee, elbows and ribs. It s addicting and i love it. So i am happy to have found this website where people have the same passion as i do. They hurt and they still go to the gym. It can be raining, snowing or lightning nothing stops them. They will be there everyday. So when i say i want to be in the best shape of my life, i really mean it. i want to prove all my friends how wrong they are saying that you cant be in shape at that age. I actually think that is when you really start live. So that is why i am writing this post because i know that most people on this site will understand where i am coming from. matt

This has to be one of the best written statements on not just age mile markers but overall statement of intents on living a healthy yet challenging lifestyle. Gave me something to think about as i am looking down the pipe at 40 myself. It takes the onus away from the number and back to where it belongs, full body/heart dedication to your own goals and being a strong person with an iron will.

    Great post.

You are another example from this site that keeps me telling myself - ‘you can do it’. I’ll be 43 in April, and never really thought I had the willpower to get what I used to have in a body - everyday on here I get more motivation and learn that I can if I work. Thanks for a great post.

    Matt,
you are soo right! I hurt also but I love it. I am 56 and cannot explain why I do it but to look better than my brother-in-laws, with trhe exception of one who is a lifter. I see how outta shape they are and I am doing something about it.
I was out to dinner with friends I have had since college and by far I was the best shape, and I consider myself not totally in shape yet.
Yes I hurt, but it is a good hurt.
I too am thankful for this site and the people in here who share the same passion. I just wish I was as passionate as them. But I am getting there.
    Rick

That is one of the most concise statments of why anyone of us put ourselves through what we do….not ego….not fear..becaus we can not picture living any other way!

I love this post. My friends who are my age (or older) all think I’m nuts. They’ve given up even trying to be in shape. Meanwhile I feel like I’m just getting started.

At 41 I can attest to the little aches and pains in the morning, but like you said, it’s a lifestyle! You don’t let a little pain slow you down. the real athletes keep pushing and strive harder towards there goal. great job fine tuning the diet!
