From Westside Raw Basic to 5/3/1
November 28, 2009I’ve got a contest (**** the Card) on January 6. I’ll be doing the full meal deal. (for those of you who don’t know, that’s powerlifting talk for full power meet of squat/bench/deadlift total) I was going to do my first single ply meet, but I’ve yet to recieve the gear. SO, with that said, I have gone off my Westside Raw template a little bit in preps for the contest. I will be aiming for a 1600 lb total. (I know this is quite low for me, bear with me) While Westside has done me good, I’ve also battled off two back injuries within 2 months of each other and gone through major surgery 6 weeks ago. As a natural lifter who absolutely refuses to take any supplement, vitamin, protien, or other substance that would make me a fake, Westside has proven to be a bit too much for me to do LONG TERM. 4 to 6 months is a good deal for me, I had hit a slump before Westside Raw and came back to a a 565 squat, 400 bench, and 715 deadlift with it. Now due to extenuating circumstances those numbers dropped back down just a little bit. (more than enough to piss me off pretty good). After the contest on the 6th I’ll be going to Jim Wendler’s 5/3/1 and swapping my assistance exercises every cycle (month) between the following:
Cycle 1: Bodyweight
Cycle 2: Big but boring
Cycle 3: Dumbbell/Kettlebell olympic/athletic
Cycle 4: Barbell
REPEAT
However! I will continue to do good mornings throughout EVERY cycle because I soley believe they are the best assistance exercise for the posterior chain, bar none. I can very well relate 100 lbs of my deadlift to learning them and doing them, whether heavy or just for the fact of doing them period. Strongman will be on the back burner for about the first 4 cycles until the weather here in Washington (state not DC) warms back up. Then I will be doing events as assistance exercises. I’m at a point where my event strength is very good, and highly competitive. HOWEVER, the one thing I am lacking is the brute gym lifts (overhead strict press, squat are the primary ones I’m talking about) that are given to either the people who have been doing the sport for 10 plus years, or to the younger generation rampant on huge amount of steroids trying to live in the now. I will continue my natural battle against my body, I will outlast them, I will beat them. (hell, I beat most of them now)
Matt
