Goodbye BodyBuilding, Hello Powerlifting

I’ve been following a bodybuilding routine for around 15 weeks now, and got some okay gains. But I’ve decided that what I really want to do is follow more of a powerlifting routine. A few guys at the kickboxing gym do powerlifting during the off-season and then on-season focus more on their kick-boxing technique and conditioning.

So I’ve reworked my schedule so I’m doing weights for only 30mins per session and then i’ll usually do some heavy bag or conditioning work straight after for 30mins. So here’s the split:

Monday - Workout Pecs, Triceps
Tuesday - Workout Quads, Hamstrings
Wednesday - MMA conditioning and cardio
Thursday - Workout Delts, Traps
Friday - Rest, Watch Some Star Trek
Saturday - Workout Lats, Lower Back
Sunday - Rest, Watch Some More Star Trek

And since its the end of my Bodybuilding routine, I should probably post my past results:

The Dilemma: Bodybuilding vs Boxing

What do you think?..

Okay.. I’ve realised now that the Bodybuilding routine of bulking wasn’t really the best way for me to increase my striking power in kick-boxing. If you read my last blog, you’ll understand the problem I encountered where my punching power actually decreased over 12 weeks. (Thanks for all the forum advice guys, massive help)

So here’s the dilemma. Do I continue down the Bodybuilding route and end up looking more like this? Built like fort knox, strong but not fighter strong.

Or train for my original passion, kick-boxing, and have bodytype looking more like the K1 fighter Remy Bonjsky? Fighter strong but no shirt splitting muscles.

Case in point. I have two friends: one is an amateur bodybuilder and the other is an amateur boxer. The amateur boxer has been in 28 fights and could probably knock most people out with a single punch but he doesn’t look like anything special (unless of course he takes off his shirt then he’s ripped as hell). But my Bodybuilding friend has is built like a truck, girls literally throw themselves into bed with him every week, plus he never gets into fights because people respect his physical presence. With all things being equal, I think my bodybuilding friend has the better lifestyle. But I love kick-boxing so..

Now I just don’t know what to train for?!?

Increase Punching Power

Ok can someone clever answer me this question:

I recently bulked up because I wanted to punch harder in Kick Boxing. I put on 6.5kg in 12 weeks and increased my bench press by around 20-25kg [You can check out my progress photos on my Bodyspace if you want]. I used a punching machine to measure my punching power before and after my bulking phase. At the beginning my punching power read 830lbs/sqin and after 730lbs/sqin. I’VE GOTTEN WORSE NOT BETTER!!!

Can someone offer me an explanation to why this is please?  I feel stronger when I lift low rep and heavy but I feel sluggish and clumsy when I punch now. Which exercises should I be doing to remedy this?

Oh.. It was so embarrassing when I stepped up to the punching machine today with everyone watching expecting me to hit a big score because of my larger framed body. This is the biggest anticlimax since losing my virginity!! You think it’s going be your greatest moment, only to be left feeling you could have done a lot lot better:S

Week 1 - 2nd Bulking Phase

I finished my first bulking phase and I managed to gain 6.5kg in 12 weeks. I think it is a good start but there is still a long way to go. Here are the following things I wish to improve upon in the next bulking phase: Layer my upper chest, add mass to all three triceps heads, and round off my lagging shoulders especially my anterior heads.

Last week I withheld my water and carb intake just to see the physical effects. I ended up losing lots of water weight and looking much less bloated around my waist BUT I felt so dehydrated and lacked energy to finish off my sets in the gym.. I felt like crap but hey at least I looked good..

My next goal is to put on an extra 2kg in the next 4 weeks. I’m also going to be adding in cardio for the first time in 3 months so I’ll have adjust my calorie intake accordingly. It’s gonna be a tough balancing act but I hope I can do it.

Week 10 - New Training Partners

27th November

Its my 3rd week back from injury and my 2nd week training with other people. Its a huge benefit working out with other people because you get to see what you need to improve on. Plus they can spot you for those last muscle growing reps.  Basically, my partners say I’m good at any pushing exercise but crap at any pulling (no wonder seeing as I’ve neglected my back).

I really hate that I’ve put on so much fat in bulking. I’ve got love handles now and the skin on my face is getting puffy. My partners are so lean and look really nice.  Basically, they’ve got an aesthetic build. I can’t wait for my cutting phase in week 12 now.

Week 9 - Carb Cutting

Been experimenting with my diet this week. I was concerned that I was putting on too much fat so I reduced my carbs while keeping the protein the same. I feel pretty shit and sluggish and I’m not recovering as fast after workouts. Next week I’m bring the carbs back in.

Ive rearranged my workout schedule so I now do chest and shoulders on the same day. Upper chest size is my priority so it makes sense to train these two muscle groups at the same time. Going to do more isolation work on my quadriceps because my hamstrings are now stronger!! As a result, my regular deadlift tends to favour a romanian stiff-legged style deadlift form rather than a deep squat deadlift form.. if that makes any sense.

Going to really try and isolate my triceps in the coming weeks and hopefully I’ll be able to bench 250+lbs in week 12.

Week 7&8 - Rehab Completed

It was my first week back training upper body and my left shoulder has not given me any problems so far. However, I am no longer training with the same intensity as I did in my first month. I think I’m just erring on the side of caution and holding back pushing myself too hard to fast. After all, that’s how I got injured in the first place which slowed down my progress in the long run.

I have changed my workout routine so that I’m stimulating each muscle group from different angles. Hopefully I can put some bulk on the top half of my chest and my posterior deltoids  which have been lagging.

My diet almost completely went out of the window for the past few weeks. As a result, I have put on a noticeable amount of fat. But I plan to lose the excess in December.

It’s so frustrating to have your inbox filled with 100s unread junk emails per day.. And Bodyspace has become the latest platform these con-artists are using to target their next victims. If someone asks you for your email DO NOT SEND IT TO THEM!!!

Well I’ve had enough! And I say it is time to fight back and take back this site from these wrong-doers… I’ve decided to set up a fake email address and reply to every single one of these Spammers personally. Week 6 - Diet Advice and Shoulder Rehabilitation

A few people have been asking me recently about my diet. It’s a huge compliment seeing as I have only been taking it seriously for the past 6 weeks. The best advice I can give is to keep a log-book of what you eat everyday. By monitoring and recording your Calorie and protein intake its easy to see which foods work best for you. If you just randomly eat anything and at the end of the week you see no improvements then how would you know what to change to get it right the next time? I used to eat 3300 calories but I ballooned too fast so I reduced it to 2800 calories and now I’m seeing steady muscle gains. It’s all about trial and error to find out what works best for you. (If anyone wants to view my diet log-book for ideas, I have an Excel spreadsheet with my meals for one week that I can send via email if you drop me a message)

I’m by no means an expert on diet and I am still constantly learning myself. The following video is one of my favourites and was the first video which got me thinking about what I was eating. I really recommend it especially for those taking part in combative sports e.g. Boxing, Muay Thai, MMA, etc..

As for the suppliments, I found the Maximuscle range works for me but it’s expensive. I’m sure there are cheaper products on the market that are just as good without the brand name.

My shoulder is still sore but I’ve got loads of good advice on rehabilitating it properly now. I’ve just bought a resistant band which knocks my ego because I doubt it would even give a toddler a decent workout. But hey, everyone is telling me to be patient and to let it heal fully. It’s so frustrating!!!
