Cardio should be done after weight training. If you train with weight with intensity, you need carbohydrate based energy to power your workout (glycogen). Afterwards, do some fat burning cardio for 30-40 minutes.

All the literature talks to doing cardio after weightlifting to burn fat. It is much more diffficult though because you are already very tired from the weights. Doing interval training after weights on the treadmill will also burn more fat for longer than just doing a moderate cardio session at the same pace. Good luck. It will be difficult but if you push yourself you will see a quick response by your body and loose a lot of fat,

I Agree with Oak on this. Also your heart rate will already be elevated from the weight training so all the cardio you do after the weights is positive fat burn.

what about swimming in the way of Cardio?

the most effective fat burning cardio that i know [ and i’ve lost 110+ lbs from it ] is interval training on the stepper. beginning at a 6 or 9 min . and increasing up to a 12 min. after 2 weeks. couple this with light treadmill and interval bike and the fat will drop off.

I think if you do interval training I’d do it on a non-weight training day. If you do cardio on a weight training day I’d go lower intensity fat burning. There are lots of opinions out there on this. All I can say is that I’ve gotten to 4% body fat on my approach without having to torture myself.

After, because with weight training you already used your stored carbs as energy and if you train with high reps and short rest periods between sets, you start the fat burning process even before starting your cardio session.
If you go straight to cardio before weight training, what happens is that you start by burning down stored carbs and start moving the fat to the cells to be burnt, but that happens some 20 minutes after you`ve started so the first 20 minutes (more or less) you didn`t burn any fat.
Hope it helps

Definately after. I think therre was a study posted on herre somewhere and I’ll try to find it and send you the link but they took two groups and had one do cardio before and one after. The one that did it after weight training lost 50% more on average than the first group. Hope this helps some.

ALL the studies say you burn much more fat with cardio AFTER rather than before.

Hey good looking, there is a great article in M & F Nov 07 pg 136 "The Do Not Do" List. GETTING LEAN. It addresses your dilema on before or after. "Doing Cardio after weight training is almost twice as productive at burning fat" reason the body plows through stored glycogen during your weight routine, making fat the primary fuel source once it’s time for your cardio session. Hope that helps. Great Soccer Legs *wink*

Personally speaking…ditch the cardio and up the intensity while moving the iron….

Hi there, like the rest, I tend to do cardio after the weights. I have a question for you though - I am curious as to how heavy you lift? What poundage do you leg press, curl, lat pull…etc.? I have a pretty similar body type as yours (well, at least close enough for the potential to be like yours, hopefully
) - but I get conflicting advice in this department. There are some who tell me to do a lot of cardio and lift pretty light. For example, once I got up to 2 plates on each side of the leg press or squatting plates - to just stop going up. I am pretty strong though and this got easy. Others like my boyfriend tell me to lift as heavy as my body needs to grow. I want to know what a real life body role model liek YOU does. Thanks!!

the best training to do is warm up jogging on a treadmill or on an elyptical for 5 minutes before you work out. this will get your metabolism jump started. the best work out to do for fat burning/cardio purposes is HIT training. this is called high intensity training. everything you do should be timed. i have also read studies by the top trainers that doing two lifts at once is very good for cardio purposes. an example would be doing bench and rows at the same time in intervals. a person would do a set of bench then right after finishing do a set of rows. this optimizes the work done in a certain time frame and works your cardio at the same time. i do this myself. the after your workout the best cardio to burn fat is again the HIT training cardio. what i do is ten to fifteen 20 to 30 second sprints then between each set i rest 30 seconds. while i was doing that style of training my body fat was 5%!!! i also work as a trainer with a physical therapist for a hospital and he graduated from the top school in alabama, lets just say he knows his stuff. i also habe trained with some of the top trainers that train only professional athletes. this is what they recommend too!

Thanks for asking this question. I’ve been doing cardio before weights and zero results. Thank you to everyone who answered too.

I have done cardio before weightlifting and i have done cardio after weights. currently, i am doing each on seperate days since i am doing interval training for cardio. it was making me extremely tired when i was doing it after weights, so i am giving this new routine a try.
You are going to have to try some different methods and see what works best for you. i also know that no matter how great your cardio is, if you diet isn’t on point, then you will never see the results that you want.
Another thing that is good is doing supersets during weight training to help boost your metabolism. Just a thought. no matter what, enjoy the journey.
take care

Scientifically speaking, if you can perform your cardio first thing in the morning upon waking up on a semi-empty stomach, that may provide the most fat loss cardio. Then, later on in your day, perform your weight training. I could supply you with quotes from the ACSM, but that’s kinda boring material.
I didn’t read through your entire profile yet, so I’m not sure what kind of cardio you’re performing. If you could do 1-2 interval training sessions per week, and 3-4 moderately paced cardio sessions per week for 30-45 minutes, that should be suffice, especially since your bodyfat looks to be around 11-14%…which is pretty good. Keep up the great work.

okay…that’s great to know…I’ve been doing cardio before my weights. I’ll definitely flip flop that and see how it goes….thanx

I can think of times when an individual may need cardio before training with weights or even after but, Do you think that you need to do cardio? I say I think not. One should do it only when they need it and you do not need it. You do not qualify for chubby. You look awesome. Eyes don’t lie. Keep up the great work.

Before or after does not makes difference for fat burning purposes, but depending what type of work-out you want to accomplish, it may affect your performance on some exercises during that session.
