This is the last entry before I post photos from the evening show. Backstage I had the good fortune to catch the promoter, Brian Cannone, and Cathy Savage. For those of you out of the loop. Cathy Savage is a former competitor and runs a figure/fitness consulting business that assists competitors and non-competitors alike. See http://www.cathysavagefitness.com
Below are a couple of photos I took of Brian and Cathy.

I should preface my next statement with a disclaimer: I have not been compensated by Cathy Savage or any affiliates. This is just my own personal opinion.
Ladies if you ever have the opportunity to attend any of Cathy Savage’s camps, I suggest you do. In all of the mid-atlantic and northeast competitions I have covered, you can pick out the Camp Savage veterans quickly. Their routines are very polished and they have a stage presence that is lacking in many competitors. You can have the best physique in the competition, but if you rush through your stage routine or mandatory poses, the judges have a difficult time judging you correctly.
Ok, enough rambling. I went through the rest of the backstage photos and picked out a few that I thought you all might like:

Tomorrow will be my final entry on the FA 2008 and I will post a few photos from the evening show…don’t forget. This show allows all the competitors to shine in the evening show.

I’ve been extremely busy and have neglected the blog. Spring time always seems to be the busy time for a photographer. Anyways…on to the backstage photos.
The Fitness Atlantic 2008 ran the gamut of competitors. It combined male models, figure, fitness, bikini and bodybuilding. Basically there was something for everyone.
Like I said, if you have never been backstage at competition, you don’t know what you are missing. While everyone is competing against one another, there is a level of camaraderie. Its not unusual to see competitors giving each other encouragement or some form of assistance. As you can see from the photos everyone is smiling and having a great time. This is amazing given the fact that many of the competitors are depleted from diet, water and food restriction. I suspect most of us would not be that happy if the last drink of water we had was yesterday!

I think the most overlooked aspect of a competition is all the behind the scenes stuff that goes on to make everything look seamless. Has anyone every wondered how all the music is cued? Here are a few photos of the DJ system that is used to load and cued the music for the hundreds of competitors along with the MC (Unfortunately his name slips my mind at the moment):

Sometimes there is a snafu…music maybe miscued…lighting goes awry… When you see first hand the complexity of a fitness show you gain an appreciation for the staff and promoters. The promoter for this show was Brian Cannone. Evidently alot of promoters do multiple shows each year. Brian has chosen to do just the Fitness Atlantic. I think by focusing on just one show each year it allows a promoter to really focus on the event and it shows in the details. I have covered several fitness and body building events . Unless you are attending a national event, when was the last time you saw stage lighting and backdrops like these?

Ok, thats it for now. Im suffering from jet lag.
Tomorrow I will follow up with more backstage photos and photos from the evening show.
just a teaser…The Fitness Atlantic adds a unique twist to the evening show that gives ALL the competitors a chance to shine….more on that tomorrow!

Ok, I finally am able to post all the photos from the FA 2008.

I used to allow commenting on the site hosting the photos, but after some derogatory comments, they are and will stay disabled.
Although I am curious as to whom people though were the best.

I know I said I would post yesterday, but I have to pay my bills so that meant I had to get the photos processed and sent off to the promoter.
I have been to several fitness events in the past, but this was by far the most sophisticated event. Most events consist of a hotel ballroom, very crappy lighting..in some cases they just use utility light bought at Lowes.
The Fitness Atlantic Championship was held at the East Haven Performing Arts Center. How a highschool landed something like this is beyond me, but it was very nice. Brian Cannone is the promoter of the event and a great guy to work with. He was right there getting down and dirty cleaning up, moving stuff, etc. I think most people thought he was just one of the event staff.
Here is the link to the event: www.fitnessatlantic.com
Backstage:
How to describe what goes on backstage….picture spray tan everywhere, bikini bite and 100+ people that havent drank or eaten anything in 24-48hrs. To top it off the women have to stand around in heels for 8 hrs straight. But yet they all managed to keep a smile on their face and seemed to be having a great time.
The competitors were fantastic. I know alot of people that have never competed would think these people were the most vain, bitchy people in the world, but its the exact opposite. My hat goes off to every single one of them.
Ok, on to pics..Over the next few days I will post a few pics of backstage shots.

I just got back from the Conn. Fitness Atlantic Championship. This is probably the most grueling event I have done to date. Up at 7am..arrived at the venue at 8am and didnt finished covering the event until 9pm…non-stop.
This is the first time I have covered this event and it was an eye opener. I need to get onto processing the photos so I will post more on Thursday evening, along with some backstage action shots. For those of you who have never competed, its total controlled chaos.
