Clavicular Osteolysis or Weightlifter’s Shoulder – it hurts
Friday, June 1st, 2007I haven’t updated my profile in a while, but a lot of good and bad things happened in the Powerlifting scene for me. First, I have won a couple of championships (http://www.athletebio.com/bra1963f1 ) and broke a national and South-American Bench Press record, which felt really good. I was prepared to lift 85kg, lifted only 81kg but did it – IPF style, with the slowest reacting referee (we timed him in 4 seconds paused at the chest). The following week I bench pressed 82,5kg in another contest and 90kg went up, but I didn’t lock-out properly.
So it is going ok.
The bad part is the political atmosphere surrounding powerlifting federations war in Brazil. I will not go into details right now, but will do so later. Unfortunately, for many reasons including my own performance, I don’t feel welcome at their meets anymore and will give preference to other federations.
On top of this stress, plus professional and personal ones, I was following, along with my team, a Sheiko training program which took about 3 hours to complete/day. Very high volume. I have my doubts about its effectiveness, but there is no doubt that it lead to my present injury: OSTEOLYSIS OF THE DISTAL CLAVICULE or Weightlifter’s shoulder.
According to my physician, in whom I totally trust (having treated me from previous very nasty injuries), it is not something I should be especially concerned with – just rest a little bit, ice it well and he applied local cortisone.
I will probably miss next week’s Brazilian Powerlifting Championship but I really don’t care. What I do want is my shoulder back to work, since this is only the beginning of my BP evolution and I have lot’s to learn and accomplish.
I am adding a few interesting resources I found which may be of some help.
