An afternoon with IFBB Pro Bodybuilder Phil Heath

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

My work schedule is unique and changes daily. One day I’ll be writing preview articles for bodybuilding.com, the next creating a logo for a client. Every day is different in the land of LIFT. Yesterday I spent the afternoon with IFBB Pro Bodybuilder, Phil Heath as he prepares for the IRONMAN next month. He’ll then make the trip to Columbus for the Arnold Classic. Phil is focused and on track do doing very well in both contests. He trains hard and with great intensity.

Since my day changes every day I need to be prepared. I knew I wouldn’t be home for a few hours so I packed a protein shake. Luckily I did because we ended up shooting for 2 hours and then I made the trek home.

Let me tell you, when you see a guy like Phil train it is motivating and makes you step up your game. Will I ever look like Phil? of course not. That’s not the point. You don’t need to look like a pro bodybuilder or even train like one but you can learn something from them. Phil’s reminded me that when you set your mind to something nothing will stand in your way.

Check out the preview photos and story from our shoot at FLEXONLINE.com. A training video will be posted tomorrow on their site.

New York Times: Physical Culture | Gear Test, Protein Shakes

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

The New York Times recently ran this piece on protein shakes:

PROTEIN shakes used to be favored mainly by muscle heads, avid strength trainers who were looking to add bulk. But endurance athletes have discovered the benefit of ingesting protein along with carbohydrates after a challenging workout. In response, several new ready-to-drink shakes have hit the shelves.

“The big craze is for runners, cyclists and triathletes to use these shakes, helping them recover faster and exercise again sooner,” said Thomas Chapple, a coach of endurance athletes in Mountain View, Calif., and the author of “Base Building for Cyclists.” He pointed out that they are easy to digest and a convenient way to replenish muscle energy in the crucial 30-minute window after exercise.

To see if these shakes did speed post-workout recovery — and to give them a taste test — Molly Kimball, a multisport athlete and a registered dietitian who works at Elmwood Fitness Center in New Orleans, drank them after running, Spinning and strength training for at least 90 minutes.

My Favorite drink of the review was the Muscle Milk RTD, which you can get here on bodybuilding.com for a low price! These come in handy when you’re on the go and need to get a meal in.

Check out the reviews of a few drinks here.

This week the mainstream media will get a chance to meet Val as the press conference of the new American Gladiators kicks off. Ron Avidan and I had the chance to interview Val after her interesting display on the Olympia stage. We caught some slack from the die-hard Waugamaniacs but to that I say, RELAX BRO!

Check it out:
