Fit on Fox: Wheelchair Bodybuilders

Local FOX NEWS station covers the Wheelchair Bodybuilders and this weekend’s competition.

They don’t have use of their lower bodies but their upper body strength more than compensates for that adversity.

Groups of wheelchair athletes will flex their muscles at the Rocky Mountain Bodybuilding and Carol Semple Fitness and Figure Championships this weekend.

Certified fitness instructor Joana Canals appeared on Good Day Colorado with some of these amazing athletes Wednesday morning.

The Lone Tree Recreation Center hosted Joana, the wheelchair bodybuilders and the Good Day Colorado crew.

Josh Dillaberry is a wheelchair bodybuilder from Orange Park, Florida. He will be competing in the event this weekend. Here is Josh’s quick autobiography:

I am 35 years old; I have been working out since I was 12. I got started wheelchair bodybuilding in 1994. My friend Billy Fraser and Phil Racardi told me about wheelchair bodybuilding. They told me about the wheelchair nationals that are held in West Palm Beach, Fl. I competed from 1994-1998 then took time off and came back in 2004.

I was born with cerebral palsy. I am able to walk and stand for short periods of time. But when I go to the grocery store or somewhere I will be on my feet for long periods I use my wheelchair. When I was born in 1972 they told my parents I was going to be a vegetable and not going to be able to do anything.

I was born with water on the brain, and I have had about 25 different surgeries in my life. Hopefully, there will be no more. I really enjoy working out and competing in wheelchair bodybuilding it is in my blood.

I got married in 1998 and we have one daughter that is now 6 going on 7. I hope to continue bodybuilding as long as I can, until I just do not want to do it anymore. I started using a wheelchair around 2000 when it started to become harder to stand for long periods of time and it was had to walk long distances.

Mason Stanfield is a wheelchair bodybuilder and fitness trainer from Evans, Colorado. He appeared with Joana Canals, but is not competing this weekend.
