Photography can be so brutal

Friday, November 30th, 2007

I know, I know, it is a tough gig but hey someone has to do it. Last night I attended an event for Mile High Sports Magazine, where they held their "Snow Angels" release party. Mile High Sports magazine is a Denver magazine that does a great job of covering the local sports scene. This issue features a few NPC figure competitors from Colorado. Five Performance Ready girls are featured in the magazine and a few of them you’ve seen here on bodybuilding.com. I’ll post up more info on the magazine and the event this weekend. Below is a photo from the event last night, brutal job huh?

Priscilla Giddings attributes bodybuilding to her success

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

She’ll be the only woman in her class but she doesn’t let that stop her. Check out the video segment on the news’ station web site.

Priscilla Giddings, 24, is leaving for Arizona on Monday to train as a fighter pilot for the Air Force, before serving in the Middle East next year.

She will be the only woman in her 140-person squadron.

Priscilla says her passion for bodybuilding has given her the endurance to pass the mentally- and physically-demanding tests.

In fact, she still holds eight world weightlifting records.
Before she embarks on her journey, she and her friend Linda Higgins have this message for young women.

Priscilla Giddings: “We definitely want to motivate young women to have confidence and get involved in an activity you enjoy and set a goal and go after it with all your heart because you can do anything you set your mind to!”

Newschannel 6 wishes Priscilla the best of luck.

Did you know Darth Vader was an Ex-Bodybuilder?

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

True story. Darth Vader was a bodybuilder. The actor who played Darth, David Prowse stood 6′7" and 265lbs in his prime.

Due to his imposing frame, the ex-bodybuilder was reportedly offered the choice of playing either the bear-like Chewbacca or Darth Vader by George Lucas, the film’s creator. He chose the latter after reasoning that cinema-goers were more likely to remember the movie’s villain.

From his official website:

I very quickly decided that I needed something a bit more strenuous than the Charles Atlas Course, so I bought myself a Health and Strength magazine and joined a weight training group that used to train in the house of the area organiser for the Health and Strength League. From there I graduated to buying my own set of weights and from then on trained either at home in the back garden in what used to be a coal shed, and with other dedicated enthusiasts living in and around the Bristol area in makeshift gyms that were invariably attached to larger sports or works social clubs.

My competing days started with the Junior Mr. West Britain that I never won, on to the Mr. West Britain where, for several years, I was always 2nd or 3rd to the 1ike of much shorter but more proportionate bodybuilders like Ron Thomas, John Pegler and Graham Price. By the time the 1960 Mr. Universe contest came round I’d blossomed from a start of 6′ 5″ and 11 1/2 stones (2meters and 75k) to 6′7″ and 17 stone 31bs (just over 2meters and 110k). But my problem was that although I was regarded as one of the top 20 physiques in the country, at 6′ 7″ I was nowhere near as heavily muscled as the shorter competitors and after the disappointment of being told by the chief judge that my ugly feet would always count against me, I decided to throw in the bodybuilding towel and turn my sights to competitive weightlifting.

Check out his website more info on his competitive bodybuilding and weight-lifting career.

Fit on Fox: Wheelchair Bodybuilders

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Local FOX NEWS station covers the Wheelchair Bodybuilders and this weekend’s competition.

They don’t have use of their lower bodies but their upper body strength more than compensates for that adversity.

Groups of wheelchair athletes will flex their muscles at the Rocky Mountain Bodybuilding and Carol Semple Fitness and Figure Championships this weekend.

Certified fitness instructor Joana Canals appeared on Good Day Colorado with some of these amazing athletes Wednesday morning.

The Lone Tree Recreation Center hosted Joana, the wheelchair bodybuilders and the Good Day Colorado crew.

Josh Dillaberry is a wheelchair bodybuilder from Orange Park, Florida. He will be competing in the event this weekend. Here is Josh’s quick autobiography:

I am 35 years old; I have been working out since I was 12. I got started wheelchair bodybuilding in 1994. My friend Billy Fraser and Phil Racardi told me about wheelchair bodybuilding. They told me about the wheelchair nationals that are held in West Palm Beach, Fl. I competed from 1994-1998 then took time off and came back in 2004.

I was born with cerebral palsy. I am able to walk and stand for short periods of time. But when I go to the grocery store or somewhere I will be on my feet for long periods I use my wheelchair. When I was born in 1972 they told my parents I was going to be a vegetable and not going to be able to do anything.

I was born with water on the brain, and I have had about 25 different surgeries in my life. Hopefully, there will be no more. I really enjoy working out and competing in wheelchair bodybuilding it is in my blood.

I got married in 1998 and we have one daughter that is now 6 going on 7. I hope to continue bodybuilding as long as I can, until I just do not want to do it anymore. I started using a wheelchair around 2000 when it started to become harder to stand for long periods of time and it was had to walk long distances.

Mason Stanfield is a wheelchair bodybuilder and fitness trainer from Evans, Colorado. He appeared with Joana Canals, but is not competing this weekend.

One of my photos with International Fitness Super-star, Oksana Grishina. I’ve had the opportunity to shoot with her twice and she is simply stunning. Keep your eye on her at the 2008 Arnold Classic.

Shedding pounds, Shredding muscles at 61

Monday, November 26th, 2007

From http://denver.yourhub.com

My husband,  Ron Testa, will be competing in the biggest bodybuilding contest in Colorado on Saturday, December 1 st, 5 weeks shy of his 61st birthday.

In March of 1973, he was involved in a near fatal automobile/motorcycle accident. He had 3 separate surgeries the first 5 days he spent in the hospital. For the next 13 months doctors tried unsuccessfully to save his leg, which had to be amputated after all. During his recovery, he worked out, began bench pressing and stayed pretty physically fit.

However, by 2005, Ron was totally out of shape - weighing almost 250 pounds. This was due to a work-related accident in October of 2000 which left him with a compressed disk in his low back and a torn up right knee which required surgery. At this point he decided to get back into training and found ways to work out around his injuries. In June of 2007, he competed in the NPC Mid-USA and placed 2 nd in the Over 60 at a mean, lean 176.

Not only does Ron look great, he’s an example of how working towards a goal, at any time in your life and with any physical limitations, can define and give you meaning. See him compete this weekend at the NPC Cyto Charge Rocky Mountain Bodybuilding Championships at East High School, 7 p.m. Go to www.jefftaylor.com for tickets and all the information. Go Ron!
