I wrestled my entire life and was always right around the 130-140lbs class. The team’s 103lb wrestler was DJ Skelton. We always used to pummel him and said it was for his own good. He took it in stride and was a pretty good wrestler. D.J. left the small town in South Dakota and eventually found his way to becoming a West Point graduate. A Captain for an infantry platoon leader of the infantry division in Fallujah, Iraq. He was wounded by a rocket-propelled grenade and lost his left eye, suffered major damage to both of his arms, his leg and his palate. He spent six weeks on life support at an Army medical center.
I remember my parents telling me about it and he was on the local news when I was home for Christmas, he was in tough shape and it was a mircale he was still alive. He is now giving back and helping other wounded soldiers through sports. He was on Fox & Friends morning show to discuss that even though soldiers may get injured it shouldn’t stop them from following their dreams.
It’s guys like D.J. who are the true inspirations in life.
