The beginning!
Saturday, September 29th, 2007Well I’ve finaly decided to start a blog on my Quest for leanness. A little background first. 29 years ago when I first got married and entered the full time work force I weighed a total whopping 145lbs. In desperation for money I went to work on an oil drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. This was very hard due to the long hours and heavy lifting but I perseveared and as I worked my weight started to climb along with a good muscle mass. By the end of 4 months I was at about 180lbs and solid. I was injured on the job and spent a month in the hospital at the same time they closed down the rig and I was out of work for several months. Of course with an injury I could not workout. Once I recovered I went to work for a wireline company rigging explosives and doing Open Hole logging. I worked on a wireline truck in the marshes and swamps of Louisiana and at that time there were no cranes or fork lifts to help lift the loads out of the trucks. We had tools that weighed 300+ lbs and were 20′ long. The idea to handle these was for the first guy to grab the tool and walk and I was to catch the other end when it cleared the truck rack and carry this in tandem with the other guy about 50 yards to the cat walk of the rig. My first time I was ready I thought and the older guy starts walking. When my end cleare the truck and landed on my shoulder I dropped to the deck. Since these tools weighed so much and they were limber the tools just about beat the other guy into the deck as well. He told me then and there to either get stronger or quit. Well my wife was pregnant so I couldn’t quit. I went from 180 lbs to 220lbs in 3 months and was gaining in strength faster than I was growing in size. I started working out at the YMCA and after my first week I placed on their power lifting board with a 250lb bench (I know it sucked) 350lb squat, and 500lb dead lift. This all came about by working in my job. I have been working out off and on ever since but never tried to trim down. Over the years my weight has gone up to 288lbs as of the beginning of this summer. That is when I realised that I had to do something. My metabolism was way slow due to my eating and sleeping habits over the years. In my job sometimes you would not stop for days and sometime not eat for over a day then at other times just sitting on your butt for days on end with nothing to do but eat and sleep. Now that I have basicly an office job along with frequent international travel I have time to correct those patterns and my metabolism has improved greatly by eating 5-6 meals per day and cutting out the sugar and snacks. My weight has dropped down to 262.3 lbs and my lifting has improved dramticly over the last few months. I intend to use this blog to document my progress and keep myself accountable for that progress.
