The Scorned Ex-Trainer

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

I once broke off a budding relationship with a complete idiot who, even after I explained as kindly as possible why I wouldn’t continue to date him anymore, exploded into a chasm of anger and pathetic excuses along with finger-pointing towards my flaws. A few months ago, I broke off a potential relationship with a man who manipulated my words, painting an eloquent story of how I was the insensitive and insecure one in the matter. He did such a good job of it that, for a moment, I had re-thought what I had said questioning my actions – but I recovered quickly from that notion concluding that he was another idiot.

Well when I “broke it off” with my now EX trainer, it was almost as if he was an embattled and scorned lover of mine. I laugh at it now, but as I was reading his email it wasn’t so much of a laughing matter. More like a WTF moment in time, one where you are so dumbfounded by a person’s arrogance and/or ignorance you are left speechless. As my understanding was, personal training is just like any other business wherein the core and most important item being the relationship that the client shares with the trainer. Customer service is paramount, and respect is undeniably key to a successful relationship.

I kind of relate it to switching my cell phone services from Sprint to Verizon Wireless or leaving one car insurance company for the more attractive deal/customer service offered by another. He wasn’t meeting my expectations with his services, and I had sought out the services of another. Simple as that, no harm done right? It’s a business and as a client I just wasn’t satisfied.

Apparently, he missed that memo.

In short (regarding the situation w/him) he wasn’t being attentive enough towards my training; I dare say that he was basically milking me for the $ and brushing my concerns off with short vague answers. When he loosely joked about my apparent overtraining, I flipped. Enough was enough. I attempted to call him, to no avail; that’s another peeve of mine he’s VERY difficult to get a hold of. So I slept on it then the next day constructed a detailed email, along with examples, supporting my perspective. I told him that I was going to get another trainer. I did it in a calm professional matter - as routine as say, dropping one insurance company for another.

No answer. Next day no answer. Following day after that, no answer.

I called him. Again, no answer. W…T…F??? I left him a message for him to confirm receipt of my email.

Well this morning I awoke to an interesting message. I won’t go and post it up here but in short, it was a long message filled with drivel. Him complaining about my volume of emails (again, my ‘volume’ contained my logs, questions about his comments to them, and any questions I had asked for clarification regarding his nutrition and workout programs. No more, no less) his workload with all the clients he has to tend to, his arduous journey towards obtaining his pro card, his long 12-16-18 hour workdays, having to worry about his mortgage payment, and it was all written with just a hint of sarcasm towards my ‘concerns’.

But the best part was when he pulled the “you’ll never find…” spill. You’ll never find…another trainer who can get you in tip-top shape and on point for the stage….you’ll never find…a trainer with a rate as good as mine. Then came the “you’ll never…” spill. You’ll never… be ready for the stage, you need at LEAST 1-2 yrs of prep. You’ll never… get your posing routine down.

I scowled at the screen when I read it. But a few hours later, I’m laughing at it. He can not be serious? Oh but he are serious indeed. Just like some of my romantic relationships it all started out with so much promise and glee, but ended with a huge rash of bitterness. At least on his end. He took it WAAAYYY too personally.

I saw it as business. You are no longer providing me with a high-quality service, so I’m going to go to another who will. Chill out homie, go have a protein shake and lax out a bit.

This time around, I went ahead and sought out a number of CLIENT referrals, with one trainer referral. When I went with my now ex-trainer it was through two trainer referrals from my gym, no client referrals. Big difference I’m finding out, between a perceived service (as the trainers PERCEIVED the service to be great, blah blah) and then the actual received service (they RECEIVED great service because etc etc).

With that, I gave him a calm respectful reply that summed it all up in one paragraph: I was not assaulting you personally, this is business, I’m going with another trainer, I’m paying for my last one-on-one session, now please close my account. Thanks. Good luck! (have a nice life).

Same Meal, Different Day

Friday, June 8th, 2007

Nowadays i’m just kinda of automatic and robotic with eating my food - i try to jazz it up every so often and ‘trick’ my tastebuds into thinking they’re not eating the same old chicken or tuna. But most times they catch on and I have think of a new way to make an old thing seem new and yummy again. At times, i feel like i have to force-feed myself to finish the meal. That doesn’t happen too often, but enough times for me to take note. Hence, i’ve given up on my food porn addiction, no more browsing the naughty photos of decadent desserts in the recipe books, or ‘accidentally’ going down one of many trans-fatty aisles in the grocery store. I can’t tease myself like that anymore lol.  Eyes on the prize….

Socializing & nutrition

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

I am proud of myself, but at the same time i still feel a smidge of guilt lol. I went to a friends housewarming party/birthday party and although i started out with only the intention of celebrating, i did buckle down to the social pressure and have a drink as a toast to the b-day boy.  I had  a white wine spritzer. And although i feel good that that was the only drink i had, i still feel guilty about it and kept thinkin, dammit i shouldn’t have had that drink. I even guzzled down 4 water bottles throughout the night to wash my guilt away in a way (funny in its own special way but true). That night, i dreamt of overnight bloating and overnight lost gains…sheesh i’m only a couple of weeks into this thing and i’m already getting these things NOW….hate to see it when i’m only a few weeks out from a comp! Anywayz, i labeled the drink as my cheat for the week and look forward to starting another fresh week.

Are Personal Trainers Like Car Salesmen?

Saturday, March 24th, 2007

In late February, when I decided that I was definitely, without a shred of doubt, going to do my first competition I set out on a mission to find the right coach to help me get there.  I started out with a basic Google search which yielded me very few options – I decided to step it up a bit and see if I could find some decent referrals. I went on bodyspace and found other females who were in competition shape and who noted the various competitions that they have or intended to compete in on their profile.

I got some referrals – but none in my price range or weren’t able to do one-on-one sessions with me because of my geographical location. I knew that this would take a level of commitment – both physically and financially but I wasn’t going to break the bank. Another problem (not from the referrals that the competitors gave me but just in general) was finding someone who actually understood the nature of the beast. Preferably, someone who had competed before and knew FIRSTHAND what I would be experiencing, feeling, and what I needed to truly be focused on. Turns out, the bigger part of the challenge was finding a trainer who knew that the heck a competition WAS. One day, at my ok-but-not-too-fluff gym I stopped by the table laden with business cards from travel agencies to trainers to real estate brokers. As I stood there browsing the selection and screening them, one of the gym trainers walked up to me, glanced at the cards I had picked up and asked,

“Oh so you’re looking for a trainer?”  I told him yeah, I was.

“Well lemme recommend this guy” as he leans over and yanks a card from the desk. “This guy *insert name here* is really good, and he’ll give you a great rate.”

“Oh for real?” I respond, feeling somewhat skeptical. I asked the gym trainer if his “boy” had any experience with training people for their first figure competition.

Pregnant pause…followed by a perplexed facial expression…which faded into stammering verbalization “Uh, yeah, yeah, I’m sure he could help you with that.”

Uhhh. No. I had a couple of run-ins like that. When I called someone or talked to someone and as soon as I mentioned a figure comp or a bodybuilding competition they gave me a weird, confused look like “what the **** is that??”  or “Why’d you wanna do something like THAT?”

But then almost always they go to their game face as if to say, well I have no idea what the heck she’s talking about OR I don’t think I can help her with that – but lemme push this person on her instead and maybe she’ll go for that.

It kinda felt like the time I was looking for my first car and I told the salesmofo I wanted a Honda Accord but instead he kept trying to push the souped-up Dodge Neon instead. I consider myself a pretty straightforward person- that is once I’ve made up my mind on something. So I find it especially aggravating when someone PRETENDS to hear what I want, then push something else all together on me.

Fortunately, I did find a reputable trainer with the competition experience and reasonable rates close to where I live. Now, the problem is, I guess since they don’t see me one-on-one with him (I intend to meet with him biweekly) they assume that I’m still in the market or whatever. And it seems that even though I’m there in the mornings 730am, sometimes 630 or 600 there they all are in full force. Sometimes they’re with clients or sometimes, as it would seem, on the prowl to snag other clients. I kindly already told two of them that I already hired a trainer, and I already have a program…

…but it looks like I might have to be a bit more *ahem* forceful with some of the more obtrusive ones.
