Thursday, February 12th, 2009I went on my ride yesterday and the darn thing costed me more than $100. I was lazy and didn’t get out until 1:45 PM. The ride was fun. The first couple of hours my lungs were clogged but that didn’t matter because I didn’t want to hammer anyways. Right before I got to Marble Falls all of my muscles started camping. First it was my left problem calf and then my other calf, both of my thighs and my inner thighs. It was totally confusing to me because I’ve only cramped once before in my life and that was because I was hammering off the couch. I was like, "Am I just too old to be able to go on a four hour ride without training?". Is this what getting old is? I’m only 35. Is something wrong with my diet? I had plenty of electrolites and water in me. I decided that if I got a painful and debilitating cramp I would abandon the ride and two seconds later it happened to my right inner thigh and so I immediately pulled over and took all of my weight off of it and it went away before it got worse. When I rolled into town I asked some ladies if there was a bus station there and they said no and I was like "Of course this is America, not some third world country". Then I suddenly had an epiphany. Maybe I’m cramping from all the weight training I’ve been doing which has made me too tight to go long distances. I sat down and spread my legs and did a limberity test and sure enough I was tighter than ever. I couldn’t touch my elbows to the ground and so I decided the cramps are from not mixing stretching in with the weight training. My muscles were too tight to allow proper circulation for the enduro stuff. From now on when I plan on a big ride I will liberally stretch the day before and I’ll be OK. I stretched for a couple minutes and was filled with a new desire to go ahead and complete the ride. I didn’t have a rear light anymore though because for some reason I didn’t have a rear light on my road bike so I took the one off of my mountain bike but I put it on upside down and even though I thought I clicked it, my seat bag pushed it off and I lost it, so I took my front one off and put it on the back which left me with no light on the front. I started so late because I figured I would get this months full moon experience one day after the full moon as I forgot about it on the full moon the day before. I knew the moon comes up considerably later the day after, but I forgot that it’s way after. On the full moon night the moon comes up as the sun goes down, but one day after you have to wait like three hours! So I was riding down the road and I couldn’t see one foot in front of me. I got to a place where there were concrete dividers and so shoulder for me so I rode on the other side of them where I had a lane all to myself which was cool. I was riding down the road minding my own business and listening to music and all of a sudden I’m flying through the air. When I landed I slid another 10 feet down something and when I stopped I found myself at the bottom of a riverbed looking up at a concrete river embankment. The lane I was riding didn’t have a bridge to go with it! I suddenly lost the taste in my mouth to continue riding so I road down to the next gas station and had to get a $40 cab ride back home. Then I had a shower and went to the hospital and got four stitches in a gash in my leg that wouldn’t stop bleeding. That’s the LAST time I go on a night ride on the road. It’s just too dangerous. There are too many things that can go wrong. From now on I will begin my rides at the crack of dawn. I think that ride is smaller than I thought. I thought it was like 150 miles but I think it’s more like 130 or something. The first half of it out to Marble Falls is no joke though. The entire thing is either straight up or straight down these quater mile to half mile long rolling hills that are so steep some of them are illegally graded.
