Man, I'm right there with you, and I say "Say what you think and feel, and let them deal with it"

If someone takes offense to it, it's probably because they resemble it way too much and it hurt. If someone is so stupid to let themself get to 300 lbs and say "How did I get this big?" (I mean, damn you were there weren't you?). Then let them deal with the comments, they chose to get like that.

If someone is making excuses for themselves you should let them be, they have their own problems. Just be nice to them like you would anyone, but I think if someone is bold enough to critisize the choices you're making to your face you should feel comfortable confronting them about their choices. Why are your choices wrong? What are their choices? Can they justify them? If they're not prepared to back up what they're saying they should stay quiet.

I get it all the time too. I got it a lot in the beginning from my family. My kids, etc. But now my son is riding his bike to the gym every day to workout. My daughter is trying out for Volleyball, and my husband is running as we speak. Our presence is a conviction. Kind of like telling an alcoholic that maybe they shouldn't have a drink. They take offense just because our we are so strong where they are weak. What we don't see is the conviction and even possible change they will make because of us.

Dude, it is so not EVEN about the need to say anything. Re-read. It IS about the double standard of the acceptability of criticising a healthy choice versus the taboo of commenting on what is patently UNhealthy. The NEED to say anything is not at issue. The double standard of what is publicly or socially permitted IS.

It can be difficult to look in a mirror and take complete stock of who you are, faults and all. On some level, we all lie to ourselves to get through it all, and obviously some lie more than others.

I guess my question would be...why the need to say anything or care what anyone says about you? You and I have chosen our lifestyle &amp; they theirs...help them if they ask, but obviously we can't change those who feel no need for one.
