the amazing www.nutritiondata.com

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I love this page. Specially, I like the search feature that allows one to find foods with a particular carbs:fats:protein ratio. It’s called "caloric ratio search". I requested a search for foods with very high protein and very low carbs and fats contents, and I got a huge list of foods that will be the basis of my food intake. Very convenient!

How to Measure Body Fat Using the US Navy Method

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009
  1. Measure your height, without shoes.
  2. Measure the circumference around your abdomen, at a horizontal level around the navel for men, and at the level with the least width for women. Don’t pull your stomach in.
  3. Measure the circumference of the neck, below the larynx with the tape sloping slightly downward to the front. Avoid flaring your neck out.
  4. For women only: Measure the circumference of the hips, at the largest horizontal measure.
  5. Plug the numbers into one of the formulas below

Formulas

  • For men, measurements in centimeters.
    %Fat=495/(1.0324-.19077(LOG(abdomen-neck))+.15456(LOG
    (height)))-450
  • For men, measurements in inches.
    %Fat=(86.010*LOG((abdomen)-(neck)))-(70.041*LOG(h
    eight))+36.76
  • For women, measurements in centimeters.
    %Fat=495/(1.29579-.35004(LOG(abdomen+hip-neck))+.2210
    0(LOG(height)))-450
  • For women, measurements in inches.
    %Fat=(163.205*LOG((abdomen)+(hip)-(neck)))-(
    97.684*LOG(height))-78.38
