I suffer on and off with depression and I et like this as well. The only thing is I eat more than I should. I have no energy to do anything even to go to the gym. It is very difficult and it is hard to get out of the funk. Hang in there and do it no matter how you feel and I promise you'll feel better and be happy that you went. Vinny

wow, melinda! thank you so much for that in-depth response. i can say one thing... my paranoia about kidney stones has def influenced my water intake for the better!!!! LOL

but from your own personal experience, it sounds like you have had nothing but positive gains from high protein diets. i, too, have noticed many positive changes in my overall well-being once i cut out sugar and implemented more proteins. i feel the best i have in my entire life (well, aside from my current head cold that is! LOL). i don't plan to cut out the proteins... i've just been fearing the kidney stone thing since i heard that.

thanks again for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. it means heaps!

Hi Jess, dont stress about the high protein diet, plenty of research has been done over the past few years and it has been shown that protein is absoluely essential to every aspect of our growth, if anything high carb diets are one of the leading causes of Diabetes. When I was pregnant with my second child, the fetus was considered small for its age and after many assessments and opinions it was determined that I was not consuming enough protein. They told me it was too late to start now and that I would have to have the baby immediately for fear of of his survival, so a date was set for the c section. I went home and upped my protein intake considerably and 5 days later I was told that the baby's structure had taken a dramatic change and had increased in size and developed his lungs and kidneys enough for me to deliver him without him staying in hospital for the 3 months that they said he would. To cut a long story short, after upping my protein I gave birth to a perfect little boy who is as healthy as ever. I have been on a high pro diet ever since and I also do similar with my children. Dr Patrick Holford (leading research doctor) also advocates a higher protein intake for children, my kids are top performers and are able to mantain fantastic concentration levels due to not having the highs and lows of sugar overdose. We eat plenty of wholegrains, spelt, oats, rye, brown rice and fruit and veg to compliment the protein intake. If you want to see real gains of muscle whilst staying fairly lean, you need a higher intake of protein than the average sedentary individual. In my opinion it is not only safe but also very essential. There are lots of articles on it on BB.Com. I also come from a medical backgorund so I do lots of research regarding nutrition. I hope this helps, you're looking fab.

i know i do!!!

and can you believe i used to eat significantly less than this for YEARS (and some days not at all)?? i don't know how i functioned!

i usually do try to aim for 1g protein per pound of weight... guestimating my weight as compared to photos. i haven't weighed myself since february and have no intention on stepping on a scale anytime soon.

but i recently read this article that said the protein your body doesn't use turns into fat... and that terrifies me. i didn't know that before, so i think that might have something to do with how restrictive my diet has become.

i don't know... i mean, how can i know how much protein my body is using???

WOW!, You need to eat a hell of alot more. If this is how you have been eating then your metabolism is most likely shut down. First of all where is the PROTEIN?????!!!!! You look like you are not a big canidate for putting on alot of bodyfat, so if you added in the proper nutrients and training you would be sculpted in no time. First of all you should be eating .7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight per day. I would go for the 1 gram. I notice you don't have your weight posted. If you want to PM your weight to me I will figure out your macronutrient amounts for you, to give you some idea of a sample diet.

I would suggest taking in protein at every meal. Good luck with your goals.
