Sick!

blech.

i’ve got the worst head cold E-Ver.  husband left town yesterday and my semester started this week.  i’ll have time to get to the gym despite taking five courses and completing 10hr/week at my practicum site.  it’s going to be one crazy semester (have to apply for practicum settings for next fall AND i applied to possibly transfer to a school near where my husband is living and working), but i’m up for the challenge!!!

btw–i’ve been logging my diet in a notebook rather than typing it up here everyday.  still have some not-so-great days here and there, but overall it’s going well.

but i’m a little freaked out… i heard high protein diets can cause kidney stones??!!! ewwwww!  i am TERRIFIED of anything like that forming in my body!!!!  anyone know if this is true???

laterz!

Hi Jess, dont stress about the high protein diet, plenty of research has been done over the past few years and it has been shown that protein is absoluely essential to every aspect of our growth, if anything high carb diets are one of the leading causes of Diabetes. When I was pregnant with my second child, the fetus was considered small for its age and after many assessments and opinions it was determined that I was not consuming enough protein. They told me it was too late to start now and that I would have to have the baby immediately for fear of of his survival, so a date was set for the c section. I went home and upped my protein intake considerably and 5 days later I was told that the baby’s structure had taken a dramatic change and had increased in size and developed his lungs and kidneys enough for me to deliver him without him staying in hospital for the 3 months that they said he would. To cut a long story short, after upping my protein I gave birth to a perfect little boy who is as healthy as ever. I have been on a high pro diet ever since and I also do similar with my children. Dr Patrick Holford (leading research doctor) also advocates a higher protein intake for children, my kids are top performers and are able to mantain fantastic concentration levels due to not having the highs and lows of sugar overdose. We eat plenty of wholegrains, spelt, oats, rye, brown rice and fruit and veg to compliment the protein intake. If you want to see real gains of muscle whilst staying fairly lean, you need a higher intake of protein than the average sedentary individual. In my opinion it is not only safe but also very essential. There are lots of articles on it on BB.Com. I also come from a medical backgorund so I do lots of research regarding nutrition. I hope this helps, you’re looking fab.

wow, melinda! thank you so much for that in-depth response. i can say one thing… my paranoia about kidney stones has def influenced my water intake for the better!!!! LOL

but from your own personal experience, it sounds like you have had nothing but positive gains from high protein diets. i, too, have noticed many positive changes in my overall well-being once i cut out sugar and implemented more proteins. i feel the best i have in my entire life (well, aside from my current head cold that is! LOL). i don’t plan to cut out the proteins… i’ve just been fearing the kidney stone thing since i heard that.

thanks again for taking the time to respond so thoroughly. it means heaps!
