It’s all about the CORE!

Friday, March 28th, 2008

My trainer truly believes in core strength.  Fridays of the week are always gymastic type workouts along with many body weight type movements.  You’d be amazed how tired your shoulder and arms get when your doing a handstand. Or a cicuit of regular pulls, combined with negatives, dips, negative dips, v-shaped pull ups, and some others all on the pull up stand without rest! I walked out of there today feeling like an animal! Just a really weak and tired animal.. :-)

Meals

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

I’m not real motivated about my brown rice, chicken, and greens.. Anybody have any simple lunch and dinner solutions?  I’m not very creative when it comes to cooking.. Single guys tend to eat whatever is the quickest to prepare.

Legs and begining to miss the work.

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Ryan pushed me through an impressive leg work out.  It’s just something about closing your eyes when your brain tells you you can’t anymore… and pushing up another rep.. and then again.  What’s happening..? Is your body telling you to quite or is it your brain?

We wrapped legs up with some vertical jumping lunges to work explosive strength and any zap anything I had left.  You go to the gym strong and leave weak.

I’m begining to miss the streets.  I watched a video of a pursuit I had last november.  I drove right into a 12ft Ravine.  Not often when the suspect outdrives you!  I pulled all my back muscles and blame it on my kettle bell workout from before shift.  I was really tight to begin with.

But I stay strong.. I met with the Krav Maga school yesterday who told me a regional Law Enforcement training center is being considered for my area.  She asked me to be one of her core instructors.  It’s going to take dedication.  My second instructor seminar is next week. 4 days / 8 hours of just straight training.  It’s going to be great conditioning, but I won’t get much actual strength work in.  I’ve asked Ryan to consider me for that Friday, but we’ll have to see how sore and tired I am from that week.

Until then I’m keeping my head up adn dreaming hight dreams.. Just want to make sure I get that Mortgage paid. :-)

Saying good bye to the Police Life Style!

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Well, I left my job after four years on patrol.  I’ve been dedicated to Krav Maga (defense system for the modern world) and after branching off into the law enforcement instructor portion I became a bit addicted.  I’m considering training full time in addition to my work outs and seeing what it would take (more importantly how long) to become general law enforcement instructor!

It’s been tough because my workouts have always centered around my performance on the street.  Now I’m centering them around the performance of self defense.. which is actualy more challenging.  My savings will only last so long so I have to choose my new path soon.

My dream goal would be to train Cops on a full time basis!

Day 6

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

I’ve missed posting a few days.  I wanted to give an all around impression of this personal trainer idea.. LOVE IT! I’ve had spotters and I’ve thought I pushed myself.  The reality of it is that I haven’t ever pushed myself as hard as I have with him.  Yesterday we worked chest, arms, and shoulders.  After bench he was having me doing push up crawls and on to negatives for arms.  What killed me the most was shoulder presses at 220lbs.. no I’m not as strong as some of you guys… but we did 4 sets of 3 negative reps.  At the end of the fourth set he ligthened the load to 60lbs and had me doing reps till failure.  I’ve found that my brain tricks me into thinking I’m more tired than my muscles really are.

My nutrition has suffered and I haven’t been consistent like my goal was.  I have just been drinking too much beer! Not a ton persay, but a couple every night is NOT ok! This week I’m keeping track well of my meal plans and cutting alcohol out completely.  Except wine.. the girl really likes it so she gets a glass or two out in front of me now and again.  I justify it to myself saying.. lots of antioxidants!

I got her up on this personal training gig too.  She wants to loose some weight and tone up.  It shouldn’t really take her very long so I’m exicted that I can talk shop with her! It’s also going to be motivating that I we can stick to our meal plans together and cardio it up together leaving the temptation of that buffalo mini-pizza and domestic brew at BJs "Hoppy Hour" at bay.

I guess my desire to be stronger and build is stronger than my desire to loose body fat.. I’ll see what I can do. I’m giving it another 3 weeks before my second progress photo.

Day 3

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I’ve never pushed my muscles to fatigue like I have with Ryan. I’ve had buddies spot me before.  But he’ll get me pushing a negative even after I’m 2 reps past fatigue. He turned a normal bench into a stabalizer workout also, but I promised him I wouldn’t give away his secrets.  My abs hurt so much I had trouble sleeping last night for using them when I rolled over.  I’m headed the right way.

Day Two

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Today was my second day with my new personal trainer.  I like him a lot… but he also talks alot… granted he is giving me a lot of information on nutrition and what we’re doing and why.  But sometimes it seems like the rests area little bit long.  I know many times I think I know more than others because I’ve researched a lot.. but compared to results.. this guy obviously knows more than me.. with that said all my confidence is in him.

He’s really into body weight type work.  After several sets of squats and lunges, he was having me do handstands near the end.  My whole body was shaking, but it made sense.  He feels what’s the point of building strength, size, and muscle if you can’t hold yourself in a handstand or other balance type position.

I’ll keep you posted.

Spotter

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Today was my first day with a personal trainer.  45 minutes into it I was light headed and could have sworn I was pale.  Finally he asks, "Are you feeling ok? Light headed?"  Geez, I’m glad that it’s a normal thing.  It took some serious concentration to keep me from throwing up on his gym floor. The work out was upper body.  He had me doing everything from bench to weighted pull ups!  It rocked! I just can’t figure out why I can’t get myself to push that hard when I’m on my own.  The fact that he could spot got me around three more reps and some negatives which I never get to do.  The werid thing is… you’d think more of my co-workers would want to train as hard as I do.  It’s hard to find someone with the same schedule.

I’m used to working out alone so I never had a spotter.  It was great to feel the muscle failure!  I’ll keep you posted.  Tomorrow is leg day.
