Hump day…

November 25, 2009

always starts with an early morning spin class…me leading it that is.  I was quite impressed at the amount of energy that I had…as I was up til 130 f*#@*ing around with Itunes trying to make a new playlist.  So up at 515…and rocked it out in class!!

Headed home after class for some breakfast - 5 egg whites and 1 cup of green veggies - and was back at the gym by 9 for an hour of skipping, sparring, kickboxing and heavy bag.  I spar with this machine named Mickey.  He is 56 years old and puts most 20 year olds to shame.  Has boxed for years and still trains 3-4 times a day.  He popped me in the nose today….wow was I leaking.  Wouldn’t stop either…for a while.  More Vit K perhaps?  Or just keep my hands up and chin down!!

Anyways…great workout…would have loved to have gotten another half hour cardio and weights…..but such as life.

Alarm is set for 445.  Love getting everything in before most people are even awake.

Great recipe for a ‘cheat’….

November 25, 2009

So I am always trying to create cheats that aren’t really cheats now that I have a little bit of flexibility in my diet…for a couple weeks anyways!

I came up with this yesterday.

2 cups scotch oatmeal

1/2 cup natural peanut butter/almond butter

2 cups pitted finely chopped dates

1/2 cup ground flax meal

1/4 cup salba/chia

1/4 cup agave syrup

1 tbsp pure vanilla extract

1/4 cup sesame seeds

2/3 scoops chocolate isolate protein powder(or what ever flavor you want)

enough unflavored almond milk to make into a dough that isn’t too wet/runny

Mix all the ingredients together in a large bowl….use your hands to get in there and mix it up!!!

Line a baking dish(size depends on how thick you want the bars) with parchment and press the doughy mixture into the dish.  Cut into desired size bars and…YUM!

Didn’t figure out the nutritional content…but can’t be too bad…as long as you don’t eat the whole thing!

She’s got legs….

November 24, 2009

Trained a client this morning that I haven’t seen trained for a while.  Wanted to give her (mostly her legs) a wake up call.

Incredibly motivated girl.  And has done amazing since we started working together in August this year.  She had been training 5 days a week before we started together but wasn’t making any progress.  Big Plateau.  For a number of reasons - diet!diet!diet! she wasn’t eating enough or often enough and all the wrong foods.  Weight training routine wasn’t intense enough and her form was all off.  Not drinking enough water.  Cardio had no intensity either.  And she had no confidence in the training that she was doing nor did she enjoy it.

She lost 12 pounds the first week!!! Wish that I could post some progress pictures of her on here. She just bought a new Christmas party outfit and bought size 10 pants.  She said that she can’t remember the last time she wasn’t in plus sizes!!

Today was leg day.

I am not sure if she will be able to walk tomorrow.  This is what we did in an hour.

4×30 walking lunges/super set with 15 travelling quad jumps/triple set with 15 leg extensions

4×30 walking kickback lunges/superset with 15 each side step up jumps onto step with 6 risers/triple set with 30 side to side skip squats

4×15 each side russian lunges/superset with 15 travelling pop squats/triple set with 10 box jumps

4×15 leg curls/superset with 30 walking diagonal lunges/triple set with 10 reverse walk outs

Then we did abs.

I mentioned that I haven’t met with her in a while.  But the great thing about that is that I am so grateful so have such a motivated client. She has taken the knowledge that I have given her…and has made it her lifestyle now.  She understands the fundamentals of eating clean and balanced.  And knows that her workouts shouldn’t be easy and to challenge herself every time she steps foot in the gym.  That every step is a victory.

I am very proud of her…and look forward to seeing her reach her next goals.  And it feels good to know that I inspire her to keep moving forward…and I know that she inpires others as well.

Good bye Cankles…you will not be missed!!!

November 23, 2009

Quite incredible what a week of eating out of routine will do to a digestive system that normally runs like clockwork.  And eating stuff that I don’t normally eat….bread, dairy, sugar, wine, etc.

I had the most incredible water bloat after the competition this time….mainly in my gut.  I should have taken pictures because, wow, that wasn’t like anything I have ever seen before.  Plus water retention like crazy.  Gotta love Cankles!!!

I guess because I leaned out and dried out so much for this show, and didn’t take the right steps the following couple days after, it totally pissed my body off and it was going to hold every single ounce of fluid that I took in.  Great.  Just the look that I was going for!!

I was really careful the night after the competition because I had 2 shoots the next day.  I drank 2 gallons of water that nite and ate a protein bar, a steak, baked potato, asparagus(yes, I still chose to eat it!! :) and a couple glasses of red wine.  I should have gotten up in the morning and done cardio….but big suprise that I decided to sleep in instead….ate clean up until the shoots were over and then actually didn’t do too badly.  Brown rice sushi, a huge salad and then a good hour of hot yoga.  My 4 hour drive home the next day, however, wasn’t quite so disciplined.  Free for all.

I feel like I just really needed to get it all out of my system.  I have been so focused and dedicated for so long…if felt good yet at the same time I almost feel like it was stupid because of all those habits I have worked so hard to eliminate and change came screaming back in to my life.  But it is what it is.  And it’s done…so time to move on and get back into it.

So I just worked out my meal plan for this week.  I eat the same thing at the same time everyday for a week.  Then I change it.

Meal one - 5 egg whites with 1/3 c. green peppers, 4 asparagus chopped and Mrs. Dash.

Meal two - 1/2 c. steel cut oats(dry) 2 tbs AB and 1/2 scoop Allmax isoflex Chocolate - mix together and nuke

Meal 3 - 6 oz. chicken or turkey breast with 2 c. salad 3 veg of choice and balsamic/udo’s dressing(2 tbsp)

Meal 4 - grapefruit

Meal 5 - 2 scoop shake with water and ice

Meal 6 - 6 oz. flank 4 oz. sweet potato and big salad - Balsamic/udo’s dressing

Meal 7 - 2 scoops protein powder - usually made into a microwave ‘brownie/cupcake’ with 1/3 c. blueberries or strawberries.

Better get off my ass and get rolling…I hear the spin bike at the gym calling my name!!

35 lbs lighter? In less than a year? Time for a post I think!!

November 22, 2009

Has been a long time since I have been on here. Where to begin.

So 35lbs of fat gone!! Well mostly fat…some water too….but all I can say is that it has been such an amazing journey.

I really started training for real about the end of March of this year.  I attended Jenny Hendershott’s Phat Camp in Vancouver.  So many of the women there inspired me…along with Miss. Firecracker herself, Jen.

At that point I set my sights on a competition in July in Calgary.  3 months.

I can’t begin to tell you how bad I wanted to make a change…to begin a transformation.  Or how hard it was some of those days.

Cardio 7 days a week, weights 5. Plus added core work.  And a ridiculously clean diet.  With one cheat meal a week.  Most of the time.  Oh yeah, and then my kids and shift working husband and teaching yoga and spin….

I had a lot of 430/500 a.m. cardio sessions and a lot of 1000/1100 p.m. cardio sessions too!!

I began to see all the mistakes that I had been making before, not only with training, but with diet too.  Supplementation was another wake up call for me.  And as my body started to change daily it seemed, that was all that I needed for motivation.

I have had so many positive things come from the path that I have taken.  I recently travelled to the Olympia in Vegas with Status Fitness magazine that I am now working for.  Did a photo shoot in the desert with David Ford which was unbelievable.  Placed 6th in my second competition last weekend(p.s. competition politics suck!!), followed by a photoshoot with Larry Niven and another with David Ford.  My personal training business has taken off like you would not believe(am having to turn people away!!) and feel better than I ever have.  Love, peace, and elbow grease!!  I am living proof that anyone can do it…what ever you set your mind to!

YOUTH JUICE - ORGANIC WHOLE FOOD

February 25, 2009

I stumbled upon an amazing product that fits in with my training so well…and I thought that I should share it with everyone here.  It is called Youth Juice. It’s an excellent way to fill the gaps in your diet. As someone who was skeptical about the benefits of Youth JuiceTM, I can walk you through any doubts you may have. I think you'’ll find that after a little investigation, it’s something you don’t want to miss out on.

  • 100% of the daily vitamins and minerals that are most significant for your immune system.
  • 7 types of whole organic berries and  3 types of sea vegetables. Three pounds of whole organic product goes into every bottle.
  • Helps you meet or exceed the daily recommended amount of fruits and vegetables.
  • Contains Fucoidan which is touted for its detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • High concentration of phytonutrients with powerful antioxidant properties.
  • Developed in cooperation with a Canadian Government Research and Development grant.
  • An Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity (ORAC) rate of 13,000 units in every 3 oz serving.
  • All natural support for energy, immunity & optimal health.

One of the most popular questions I get is “are there any products you recommend to achieve a healthy body?” Every time I would answer, “no there are not.” Well the time has arrived that I have come across something that is pretty good. It is called “YJ” or “Youth Juice.” The popularity of juice has gone crazy. Many companies that sell them are now billion dollar organizations. Why are people spending so much money on juice? Most bottles sell for $30 to $60. I can tell you why. The companies that sell the juice are marketing their product to the public claiming “incredible” actually, “magical” weight loss, health and energy benefits. Why wouldn’t anyone want these improvements if they were as easy as drinking a juice?

My stance has always been that your body will take care of itself as long as you provide the right environment for that to happen. No product will change how you look or feel. The right amount of sleep, exercise and proper nutrition is the key. The belief that you can trash your body throughout your life and then drink a juice to make it all better would make you very naïve. Actually it would make you stupid. We all want the easy way out. We all want to believe that there is a product to delay aging, give us more energy, help us lose weight, and remove pain from our bodies. Sorry to say folks, it does not exist. So why am I endorsing a product when I don’t believe in anything that really works?

Let me tell you why I like Youth Juice:

1. It is an organic whole food product. There are ten ingredients, seven different types of berries and three sea vegetables, one being seaweed. These foods have an extremely high dose of nutrients.

2. It contains 100% of the Recommended Dietary Allowance of the vitamins and minerals you need daily to support a strong immune system and healthy cells.

3. Youth Juice was made in conjunction with a government research grant. The findings of the research on the product can be found at www.checkthescience.com.

4. It has the highest anti-oxidant content of any product on the market. Anti-oxidants are well know for fighting free radical cell damage caused by such things like sun damage, pollution, bad foods we ingest, and stress.

5. The first ingredient is raspberries. Most juice products list filtered water as their first ingredient. Why pay so much for a product where the number one ingredient is water?

6. You can justify the cost of the juice by the contents in it. If you were to buy the organic berries and vitamins YJ Juice contains separately you would be spending much more.

7. It tastes really good.

When you go to the YJ web site, there are testimonials that YJ has helped with joint pain by acting as an anti-inflammatory, increase your daily energy levels, and slow down the aging process. I cannot say for sure you will experience any of these things. Let me tell you what I do know. Every day cells in your body die and new ones are created. In six months the cells you have today will be replaced by a completely new set. Having healthy cells is vital to achieving the weight loss and fitness level you desire. When your brain, nervous system, organs, circulatory system, and muscles are functioning efficiently and without illness, you are more likely to achieve the body you have been striving for your whole life. To get to this position I recommend three things:

1. Get an eating plan set up for you specific for your metabolic rate. You need to know how many calories your body needs daily for it to perform intense exercise, get the nutrients to keep your cells healthy, but no extra that will be stored as body fat.

2. Get a proper exercise plan that you can maintain long term. The plan has to be specific to your current fitness level but also progressive to make sure you are constantly forcing change. The plan should contain a minimum of two to three resistance training workouts, plus five sessions of cardiovascular activity weekly.

3. Try YJ juice to supplement any nutrients you may not be getting from your eating plan. Even if you eat perfect, you may not be getting all the nutrients you need from our food supply. Poor soil nutrient content, transportation delay of getting foods to you, plus the quality of foods available to you all affect nutrient content.

If you would like to buy the juice by single bottle to try it out it is $55.

If anyone wants info about this fantastic product please don’t hesitate to ask!

Fresh start

February 9, 2009

Officially in the new place.  I used to love moving…but after staying in one place for 7 years and having a couple of kids…it isn’t what I remember.  The first place that we really put down roots.

It was time though.  Overdue.

This community has so much more to offer.  A pool…yay I can train for triathlons again!  Okanagan is triathlon mecca.   A gym that blows the old one out of the water…..no bitchy, territorial, monopolizing owners….that hired me on the spot today to teach Yoga, spinning classes, do personal training….the opportunities are endless!!

Today was the first official day of training for the figure competition in Calgary on July 4th.  I have been dabbling with the Cut Diet and had Scivation send me a program…..practicing with it for a few weeks.  I have pictures set up with Status Magazine for the Yummy Mommies section on the 10th of April…right before I leave for a week in Cuba. Man that sun is going to feel soooo good.  And damn I am going to look good in a bikini this year!

I know I need to post new progress pictures and measure again.  All in good time.

Why do the boobs have to be the first to go?

January 7, 2009

I know, I know, they are fatty tissue.  And I should be excited because it means that the fat is on it’s way out.  But really….couldn’t it go from my ass and thighs at the same speed that it disappears from the chest area?

Day 6 today with Cut diet.  I am doing the 1500 cal plan.  I want to lose a lot of BF as I think that I am at about 20%?  I hope that I am eating enough calories though.  I can’t believe the difference that it has made in a week.  I have to admit that I have never been so disciplined with eating before.  Ever.  And I am hooked…my body loves this.  I have always been a healthy eater and been active and worked out, but this feels different.  I kind of feel like I am a little obsessed with all the food that I have to consume and the times that I have to eat and the weight….blah blah blah.  I know that this is what I have to maintain in order to achieve my goals for 2009.  Whoo hoo!

I am having a hard time finding supplements that I want and info about what I would benefit from the most.  If I am going to spend that kind of money I want to get the best results possible.  I can get very limited SciVation in my area(western canada) and need some more info on Gaspari and BSN.  Hopefully I can get some feedback from the peeps on this site.

Peace.  Out.

Off to a great start…14 weeks to go…

January 2, 2009

Managed to keep on track over the past week…still stuck with cardio and workouts.  Wow the temptation though….almost makes me want to hibernate and not leave my house.  I think that this is making me a little antisocial as I have very few friends that share the same habits.  Mostly just my partner.  That’s okay….makes our bond stronger…ha ha.

So 14 weeks to go until the big pictures and the trip to Cuba.  26 weeks until the competition in Calgary.  Lots of stuff in coming up that are going to make this challenging.  We move at the end of the month and will be in transit for about a week….no kitchen, no fridge…..

2009 is going to be an amazing year.  I am going to work harder at achieving goals than I have ever worked before.

Team Scivation - who has results they would like to share?

December 29, 2008

….here I come!!!  Got my info sent off to Derek yesterday and recieved an email saying he got it…..wow that guy is fast!  Wondering who else out there has done this program and how they fared?

Anyways, very excited to hear back and get rolling with it.  My husband is interested in it too and send in his request for help….YAY!  Can’t wait to do this together.

Happy Almost New Year!
