To the runners and fellow military
ok…so i have my annual PT test coming up in a little under a month and basically i have to do well or I’m in trouble. Well the test consists of pushups, situps, and a 1 1/2 mile run. the pushups and sit-ups won’t be a problem but that run is killing me. i have been trying to get my run time down but everytime i get to about the mile mark my calves are burning with lactic acid so bad i cant even walk but i push through it and finish the run. my problem is my run time is about 15-16 min and i just cant push myself through the pain of my calves so i walk a little run a little till im done. i need to get my time in the 13’s. please help.

have you tried interval training? run flat out for 200m then jog for 4oo repeat 4 times as you get used to it increase the flatout until you are doing 4oom each also make sure you warm up properly and don,t forget the carbs you can,t run on an empty tank. best of luck you got this half the battle is in your mind.

What kind of training are you doing to prep for the PRT? You should atleast a month out start running/jogging to get your legs used to moving. I ran mine in 10:04 two weeks ago. Kinda upset didn’t get under 10:00. Anyhow I atleast think you need to get to where you and jog the whole thing. Keep a pace of two minute qtr mile and you’ll pass. Is this going to be your 3rd strike? Right now I do cardio on a treadmill for about 65 minutes. From My understandings if you do sprints it well help you be faster. Howeer your calf problem is something I have never delt with.

You could try L-Glutamine. It helps with muscle soreness and that also comes from a build up of lactic acid.

When I was in the military I would use the treadmill. My best time was 10;30 2 mile.
Find your speed you can run the full 1.5 mile. Then when you feel like you can…about every week or so increase the speed and incline slightly. do this for a few weeks or months and you will see a difference. Good luck!
