15 Words to Describe Yourself

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Just for fun a decided to take a look into my soul and describe myself.  I figured that the first 15 words that came to mind would be the ones I’d use.  The following is a list of adjectives that I’d use to describe myself and why.

  1. Young - I’m 24 :)
  2. Creative - I’ve come up with 30 speeches, 78 blogs, and 10 workout programs in the past year.
  3. Impatient - I like to get things done quick and in a hurry.
  4. Motivated - I lost 50 lbs in about 6 months.  Rocky can’t touch me.
  5. Strong - Bench 350, Squat 425, and I can pull off about 29 pullups
  6. Unconventional - it would take 40 blogs to tell you how crazy I am.  I like to challenge all standing theories on life.  That’s good enough :)
  7. Intelligent - I managed to pull out of the #1 engineering school in the south with a 3.01 GPA.  *Pats hand on the back*
  8. Straightforward - tell it like it is all day every day (unless it’s going to hurt my own feelings ;) )
  9. Funny - or at least I think I am.  You ever laugh while reading this blog?
  10. Headstrong - once I put my mind to something it’s as good as done
  11. Curious - my book list is at least 20 books long
  12. Charming - that’s what my grandma tells me :)
  13. Dedicated - see # 4
  14. Confident - I ain’t afraid of no ghost
  15. Silly - I have to keep it fun.  That’s all I know

3 Dynamic Ways to Keep Your Motivation Alive

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Picture yourself 20,30, 40, or even 50 years from now.  You’re 80 years old. Gray hair now dominates your skull.  Your muscles have atrophied with age and your face is wrinkling gently with each passing day.

Today you wake up like you do every morning.  The alarm clock goes off and you roll over to quiet the noise.  Slowly you pull the covers back, swing your legs over the bed, and sit up straight.  Next, you slide your feet into your slippers.  With a grunt you bring yourself to your feet and make your way into the kitchen.  You pour yourself a cup of coffee and take a seat at the kitchen table.

As you drink the coffee you begin to daydream.  Your thoughts wander into the life that you desired to build but lacked the motivation to follow through on.  As you dream you start to have thoughts:

  • I remember when I had that idea!
  • I remember when I wanted to create that contact!
  • I remember when I got halfway done with that goal and stopped.

I remember, I remember, I remember…You count the number of times you sold yourself short.  Thoughts race through your mind like a Ferrari on the tracks.  Your emotions go back and forth between anger and anxiety.
After a few minutes the coffee cup is entirely empty.  You find yourself identifying with that emptiness.  You find a mirror and stare into it and ask yourself this question…Why did I let my Inspiration Die?
Reading and following the tips outlined in this article will ensure that you’ll never have to answer that question.  Here are 3 truly dynamic methods to keep your inspiration ignited.

1 - Daydream

Daydreaming is often labeled as negative because you could be doing something “more productive”.  I disagree with that statement.  This world is created and made better by dreams that have become fullfilled realities.  Those dreams are from people just like you and me.  So why not have them?

A wave of positive emotions sweeps you up when you’re off in daydreaming.  Here’s another thing about daydreaming.  When you daydream you imagine yourself in places that you have a deep rooted desire to be in. Keep thinking about those places and taking action to get there.

2 - Find Inspiring Material

Maintain a library of inspiring material.  When I say inspiring material I mean anything including but not limited to:

  • Books
  • People
  • Short Stories
  • Webpages
  • Movies
  • Magazines
  • Articles
  • Music
  • Photographs
  • Quotes
  • Artwork

Whenever I need an extra boost I turn to my library…most often in the form of music.  It’s usually just what the doctor ordered.

Your best work comes right after you get yourself fired up (which you can do on command).  My best workouts have been fueled by high energy motivating music.  I’ve given some of my best speeches after someone either got me upset or I was able to listen to my favorite song right before.  It works like a charm because my energy level is guaranteed to be high.

Seek, keep, and USE inspiring material so that you can live an inspired life.

3 - Continue to Learn

Knowledge is the key that unlocks all doors.  Those who possess it are unstoppable.  All too often I witness people get out of schools and literally turn their brains off.  Its sad to see people think that learning stops when school is over.  It’s a big problem in our world.  It’s the main reason why people get caught in the vicious cycle of starting things and giving up on them.  It’s easy to get frustrated when you have no clue what you’re doing.

I look back at some of my earlier weight loss efforts and laugh.  They were truly pitiful.  I’d nearly starve myself while running 5-6 miles a day.  My long term plans were non existent.  I wanted to lose weight NOW and I did everything in my power to make it happen. I lost a little weight but it didn’t last long.  Eventually, I returned to my normal eating patterns and totally slacked off running.  The weight I lost found soon found its way back home  as well :(

Finally, after years of struggling with weight I sat down and put some actual research into it.  I found out that I needed to eat 5-6 lean meals a day, perform cardio, AND lift weights.  For once I knew exactly what I was supposed to do and why.  After gaining the knowledge and using it a miracle occured.  The weight came and stayed off.

It’s easy to get demoralized when you have no idea what you should be doing.  It’s hard to get demoralized when your knowledge base is growing day in and day out.

When you have something in mind set your sites on it and study it.  Study it like your life depends on it and you can’t go wrong.  He (or she) who has the knowledge has no problem being motivated to get the job done.

Conclusion
Maintaining your motivation can be challenging if you aren’t equipped with the tools to do it properly.  In this article I’ve described 3 dynamic methods to help you keep your motivation alive.
  1. Dream
  2. Collect Inspiring Material
  3. Continue to Learn
Do these 3 little things and you’ll wake up motivated and inspired every day.

The Assault On Macho Men Round 1 - Talent is Feminine

Monday, October 1st, 2007

As I promised last week I’m going to deliver the first article in the Assault on Macho Men Series.  My first article is about the talents that men have and hide.

Somewhere in ancient history the great man’s man (whoever that is) decided that only a few tasks on this earth were indeed manly.  They include

  • Killing animals with your bare hands
  • Launching projectiles
  • Chewing Rocks
  • Lifting Huge Objects
  • Dragging your knuckles on the ground
  • Pounding your chest
  • Construction
  • Staring at women
  • Sports or Athletics

Since the great man’s man has decreed it then so it shall be.  We as men are supposed to do things like bite rocks, lift boxes, and bash each other’s heads in.  In the year 8 A.D. this behavior was acceptable when we didn’t know any better.  It’s slightly ridiculous to see the number of men who frown on creative writing, poetry, speaking, singing, art, and plays as “feminine” professions.

Here’s a perfect example.  A little over a year ago I decided to look into professional speaking as a career path.  I’d began to speak often and I was slowly falling in  love with the experience (while simultaneously losing what was left of the passion I had for my job).  The females I knew where very encouraging for the most part.  Not only did they encourage me but they wanted to be actively involved in my new career.   I was very uptight about sharing these same feelings with any males because I didn’t know what to expect.

Slowly but surely I began to open up to my male friends to very mixed reviews.

“That’s pretty cool”

“That’s stupid”

“That’s ok I guess”

“Aww I see you getting in touch with your feminine side”

“Haha. You write poems now?  How do they start roses are ride violets are blue?”

“What kind of man goes around talking about his feelings like that?”

“Are you gay or something man?”
When the negative sarcastic remarks started to pour in I was caught off balance. A million thoughts ran through my mind.  Why was I being treated like this?  Why were men taking my innermost desires and dreams and turning them into a big joke? Was I going to be outcast from my male peer group because of this?

This inner battle went on for about a month before I’d had enough.  I soon realized that I was acting out of character and allowing the opinions of others to shape the career path I chose to create.  I became angry with myself for falling prey to such basement level motivations.  Eventually I decided that people were going to say something either way.  What difference doesn’t make to me one way or the other?

That’s when I realized the difference between myself and the macho men.

The macho man is not expressive.  He is a sheer brute like the many brutes that came before him.  Even if he can’t jog a 1/2 mile, bench press half his body weight, or climb a flight of stairs.  He can still be MACHO.  He can still drag his knuckles on the ground, chew rocks, scratch sticks together for fire, and throw projectiles into the air.  After all isn’t that what we all want out of life?  The drag our knuckles on the the ground, chew a rock, and then throw that rock at a defenseless animal ?  Well I don’t but I know plenty of people who do.
MACHO brutes hide behind their vail of pride and never really explore their true talents.  They are too consumed with worry over what is masculine and feminine in this world.  Lifetimes have been wasted hiding behind the macho curtain.  I prefer to take the curtain away and live the way I see fit.

I’ll explore my talents even if they are “feminine”.  I can take comfort in knowing what my talents are and knowing that I’m doing my best to develop them.

Hey Mr. Macho Man! “Can you say the same?”

The Assault on Macho Men (Introduction)

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Have you ever payed any attention to what the image of a man is "supposed" to be?  If you haven’t then pick a man out of a crowd (any one should do). Fire up a conversation about sex, emotions, life, dreams, working out, eating, or anything remotely emotional like homosexuals (OH MY GOD A GAY DUDE IS WITHIN A BAJILLION FEET OF ME!!!!! OH MY GOD!OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD!) and you’re likely to get some sort of pre-programmed Macho Man grunt.

Somewhere in the evolutionary chain the dean of all that is "manly" decided that in order to uphold the code you must:

  1. Hide your true talents
  2. Display no emotion
  3. Juggle 3-4 women
  4. Practice Homophobia 24/7

Even though it happens daily I’m always shocked to run into a true "Macho Man".  I don’t understand what you’re trying to communicate.  However, I do know how ridiculous the mentality is.

With that said I will launch my own personal assault on the Macho Men of this world.  I plan on showing them that its ok to be talented, show your emotions, be of normal size, and dream all while being a man.  It’s possible.  I know because I do it.  It’s actually very fun.

On Monday for the next six weeks I will launch a full scale assault on the six tenants of being a Macho Man.  Don’t turn into cavemen on me before its over :) .

Above Average!

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Yesterday a friend of mine got me really fired up.  We were having a discussion about buying a house and he spouts off and says "The Average person our age is blah blah blah".  As soon as he said average I stopped paying attention.  That word absolutely drives me up a wall.  Average has never been very attractive to me so it makes me crazy when someone quotes an average or a statistic.

I had to look at faithful www.dictionary.com to figure out why I despise that word so.  On the site the word average is described as a typical amount, rate, degree, etc. To me that reads the same as everybody else.  Never has that option been attractive.  Not in the school yard, high school, college, working, blogging, or working out.  Why do anything with an aim of being normal???
Seriously…According to statistics (depending on who you quote)

  • 65% of Americans are overweight –> I used to be one of them until I decided it wasn’t for me.  The statistic is sad but it can be swayed easily.  Other countries are living healthy so one of the wealthiest in the world sure can.
  • 95% of diets fail–> I won’t even touch this one.  We all know there is no quick fix for the body!
  • 90% of new businesses fail –>  Yet another statistic that can depress us if we allow.  I use it to motivate me.  Somewhere out there 10% of business owners know what’s going on.  It seems to be in my best interest to find them if I want to succeed.
  • 70% of Americans hate their jobs–> One time I had a job I wasn’t too fond of.  My manager was indirect, the tasks weren’t mentally stimulating, and I felt stagnant.  I did the only thing I knew how….I sucked it up, found a new position, and moved on with my life.
  • The average credit card debt is 9,000USD–> No sir I don’t like it.  If backing myself up 9 grand is how I fit in I think I’ll pass.  No really I’m serious I’ll pass.

Far too many of us hide behind averages and statistics to make us feel better.  Saying things like

  • If 65% of people are overweight then its ok right?
  • If 70% of people hate their jobs then its ok if I rot away in mine too right?
  • If my first business venture fails then I should just hang em up because 90% of new business fails anyway right?
  • If I have 6,000USD in credit card debt I’m good since the average is 9,000 USD right?

Whenever I hear this I just want to drive a steak into my heart because I absolutely don’t care what the average is. It doesn’t relate to me in the slightest bit.  There are only a few BILLION people on this earth.  I’m not very interested in trying to emulate them all.  I’d rather exceed the average and enjoy myself in the process.

Status quo is for people who want average results.  I’d prefer to aim for something higher.  That’s why I sprint out the last 1/2 mile of a 6 mile run.  That’s why I slap on 45 lb plates when I do dips.  That’s why I consume 1 book a month.  That’s why I seek out danger and new experiences.  Being average is easy and so much less rewarding than truly extending yourself and growing.

I’d like to close with this final thought.  There’s enough average going around.  In the event that you decide to be ABOVE AVERAGE the precious "average’ won’t budge.  The law of large numbers says little ole me can’t change the average.  I can and will strive to change myself and remain above average in the weight room and in life.  Hopefully you will too.

5 Reasons to Never Work out at Home Again

Monday, August 27th, 2007

A while ago I was discussing they gym with a friend of mine.  He constantly creates reasons to "work out" at home and avoid the 2 excellent gyms within 2 miles of his home.  I broke down his defense with these points.
1 - You are cheating yourself!

The best equipment is in your gym.  LA Fitness, Gold’s Gym, 24 hr fitness, and Bally’s are designed with fitness in mind.  Working out at home (unless you have ALL the right equipment) won’t provide the stimulus you need to create lean muscle tissue.  No weight (or bodyweight) exercises are good when nothing else is available.  To really stress your body you need weights.  The local gym is happy to have you.

2 - Success breeds success

Success is contagious no matter the venue

  • Business
  • Dating
  • Cooking
  • The Gym

If  you’re around a good business man you pick up on their acumen.  If you know someone who fairs well at dating more than likely you’ll gather tips from them.  If mom is a good cook chances are you’re a good cook.  Being in the company of fit people rubs off.  People tend to take on the patterns of those around them.  If you workout at home then you take on the patterns of your furniture :) .

3- People are already isolated enough

Our circle of associates and contacts can all use some expansion.  It’s good to experience other human beings.  The boss, wife, kids, and coworkers are a constant in all our lives.  Life gets stale when you experience the same 6-7 people.  Go to the gym and mingle with the people there.  If you go at the right time you can meet some VERY interesting people.

4-Gym Rats have valuable FREE Advice

Sitting in the locker room and listening to people talk is invaluable.  The really hardcore and successful gym rats discuss their sets, reps, weights, timing, and breaks in the locker room.  If you ask them they are more than willing to help.  Everybody likes to feel needed so…make the gym giants feel needed.  They’ll return the favor with their vast knowledge.  When they do PAY ATTENTION!

5-There is no reason to be intimidated

I’ve had friends, clients, and coworkers all express sentiments of being intimidated in the gym.  Whenever I hear that I get confused.  I understand that there are some fantastic looking people in the gym, but they are in the minority.  Most people in the gym are striving to meet their fitness goal just like you.

Just about everybody in the gym these days has on an Ipod.  We spend more time finding a song to rep out to than looking at other people.  Everybody is in their own little world once the workout starts.  Chances are one person is concerned with the way you are looking.  I’ll leave it up to you to guess who it is.

#1 Reason that Diets Fail

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

Since I’ve lost weight I constantly get asked what diet program I used to lose weight.  Which miracle program helped me shed all those unwanted pounds?

  • Marcus are you “in the zone”?
  • Marcus did you use the Atkins diet?
  • Marcus do you have a south beach bod?

The answer is No, No, and not yet.

Like many people I tried and tried to use diets and miracle programs to lose weight.  I’d start with hopes of miracle results in 10 days and be thoroughly disappointed with the results.  It wasn’t until I began to lose weight that I realized why 95% of diets fail.

Diets are SHORT TERM solution (shortcut) to a LONG TERM problem.  No amount of tricky pills, widgmos, or diet cycling can compete with evolution.  Our bodies are too smart and evolved  to fall for short term over night trickery.  Long term issues can only be addressed with  true behavioral shifts.

That my friends is the #1 reason why diets fail.  Our lifelong eating and fitness patterns are out of wack.  Think of the way we celebrate.  99% of the time there is cake, wine, pizza, or beer involved.  For an entire lifetime we eat these patterns up.  Wreaking havoc on our metabolism and muscles.  Turning your attention to the matter at hand for a mere minute or 2 won’t do it.

Physically fit people (and the 5% of successful dieters) committ to the correct nourishment and physical fitness plans.  No shortcuts allowed.

Great News Today!

Friday, August 17th, 2007

On Sunday I submitted my 2nd article to JP for publishing to the site.  I was determined to continually submit articles until my material made the site.  When the article gets published I’ll be sure to post the link.  Writing and speaking are two of my passions so I’m very happy right now.  Have a great weekend and keep it lean.
