Posting Frequency Reduction

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I’ve been meaning to make this post for a while. For all those that regularly read my blog I’m sure you’ve noticed a significant reduction in posting frequency.  I’m in the process of getting my own website up that will be powered by a more focused, impactful, insightful, and entertaining blog. I haven’t really taken this blog very seriously because I don’t host it on my own. I’ve basically just thrown my thoughts into articles.  I get a decent amount of comments both on the blog and through my personal account here on bodyspace from members telling me that I write well and that they have added my blog to their favorites (so I must be doing something right).

To that end I’ve decided to take things seriously, focus my writing, and do something worthwhile with my blog.  I’ve got somethings to say that I’m sure you will enjoy.  I’ll cover more topics, plan the articles to provide a better flow, and write better.
I’m doing this for several reasons:

  1. I like to write/speak/communicate
  2. I’m interested in learning to code my own page
  3. I believe I’m good enough to attract significant traffic
  4. I want to own my own web based business to gain experience in managing a business.

For the next few weeks I’ll be slamming my computer against the wall trying to figure out how to code HTML, CSS, javascripts (maybe), and all the other goodies that come with the process.  When I come up for air I’ll be sure to post something here.
Thanks for reading and I look forward to having you at my new blog.

15 Words to Describe Yourself

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Just for fun a decided to take a look into my soul and describe myself.  I figured that the first 15 words that came to mind would be the ones I’d use.  The following is a list of adjectives that I’d use to describe myself and why.

  1. Young - I’m 24 :)
  2. Creative - I’ve come up with 30 speeches, 78 blogs, and 10 workout programs in the past year.
  3. Impatient - I like to get things done quick and in a hurry.
  4. Motivated - I lost 50 lbs in about 6 months.  Rocky can’t touch me.
  5. Strong - Bench 350, Squat 425, and I can pull off about 29 pullups
  6. Unconventional - it would take 40 blogs to tell you how crazy I am.  I like to challenge all standing theories on life.  That’s good enough :)
  7. Intelligent - I managed to pull out of the #1 engineering school in the south with a 3.01 GPA.  *Pats hand on the back*
  8. Straightforward - tell it like it is all day every day (unless it’s going to hurt my own feelings ;) )
  9. Funny - or at least I think I am.  You ever laugh while reading this blog?
  10. Headstrong - once I put my mind to something it’s as good as done
  11. Curious - my book list is at least 20 books long
  12. Charming - that’s what my grandma tells me :)
  13. Dedicated - see # 4
  14. Confident - I ain’t afraid of no ghost
  15. Silly - I have to keep it fun.  That’s all I know

What’s in a Handshake?

Sunday, March 2nd, 2008

Picture this.

You’re meeting someone for the first time.  The two of you introduce yourselves and you stick your hand out to shake hands.  The person you’re meeting with grabs your hand, squeezes so hard that he stops the blood flow, and shakes so hard that he tears your rotator cuff.

Your response is?

A) Oh that’s normal

B) I’ve just been blessed by a wonderful, strong, virtuous, powerful, insightful, brave, talented, healthy, and truly remarkable leader

C) Wow I don’t know if the death squeeze and rotator cuff tear was necessary

If I had to guess I’d say your answer is….C.

If you listen to the right people (or the wrong ones depending on how you look at it) you’ll get the impression that a strong handshake sends a signal of strength, power, and courage.  I, on the other hand, think its just a handshake.

I can count on zero fingers the number of times I’ve left a meeting with a person and thought "I wasn’t really sure about him until we shook hands. THEN and ONLY THEN did I know he was the one for the job."

Seriously who is making this stuff up?

Every now and again I’ll run into someone who believes in the myth of a powerful handshake.  They believe that a handshake sends a signal of power.   The last time I ran into a hand shake hero I began asking questions.

Me: Do you shake everyone’s hand like that?

Hand Shake Hero: No

Me: Why not?

Hand Shake Hero: It’s not always appropriate.

Me: Really?  Well when is it appropriate?

Hand Shake Hero: In a business setting or in an unfamiliar environment when I need to show presence, confidence, and power.

Me: You don’t need to establish any presence, confidence, and power with me.  Would you shake your mother’s hand like that?

Hand Shake Hero: No

Me: Show me how you’d shake your mother’s hand.

*Exchange a normal handshake*

Me: Do me a favor and shake my hand like you’d shake your mothers.  I know she may not be as pretty as me but they have surgeries for that :)

Hand Shake Hero: ………….

Me: Thanks!

Conclusion

A handshake is just a handshake.  It doesn’t make you a titan amongst mere mortals or a king amongst kings.  It only makes you a person that believes in ridiculous myths. I’m not sure where the idea got started but its being passed along to way too many people. If you’re a good person to know then a strong handshake doesn’t make me want to know you more.

Stop hurting people with your handshake and play nice.  People will appreciate it more than a broken hand.  Trust me.
