Birthday Challenge: $397 for groceries and no heat

Friday, January 30th, 2009

holbee

Furnace went on the blink this morning. No heat. Turns out Property team hasn’t had it serviced in 4 years and the filters we more clogged than a teenager’s pores. So, no workout (had to get the boys to somewhere warm)

Let’s go to the grocery store!

So, no workout, but let’s go buy food. Three hours, one transformer action figure, two shopping carts, two dirty diapers, and $397 dollars later, we left the store.

Oh, and we still have to buy meat.

Dude. I don’t think I can handle missing another workout. lol!

Birthday Challenge: “Tick-tick-tick” 19 days to go

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

holbee

Nothing melancholy here! Just amazed at how close I am to my Birthday challenge date and how close to my goals as well. Time seems to go by so quickly some days. Others, it simply drags. Actually, I might hit the 3 lifts in the next week! The bf%, the most difficult goal, is getting there slowly but surely.

Yesterday wasn’t as busy as I had thought that it would be. I had 2 events postponed due to the ice and snow, so that freed up 90 minutes for lunch and the entire evening. It was nice to relax with the family in the evening rather than trek over the river and through the woods and back again. I did manage to get in my visits for the day though. Today is Squat and DL day. We’re reintroducing powercleans today as well. ***shudder*** this’ll be fun.

Birthday Challenge: Bench: Tripled 330, walmart rubber bands, and fillings

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

holbee

Getting closer! Yesterday I did NOT feel like working out, and unfortunately neither did my workout partner. However we pushed through anyway and it paid off. I tripled 330 with pauses on the bench! That’s a pr for triples. It felt pretty solid. The rest of the workout felt tired and bleh (lol). But that’s ok.

Dr. and Dentist were both able to help me. Dentist found a tiny cavity UNDERNEATH of my sealent. Not fair! Apparently, since it was underneath of the sealent (caused by a crack in the side of the sealent) all of my brushing and care wouldn’t have helped. So, I go in on my birthday @ 1pm to get a filling. Otherwise, he said everything was great.

Dr. prescribed a nasal spray for my sinuses/allergies/snoring. Already seems to be working. Also, she said that my hands are going numb due to impingement. My bi’s and pecs are getting too big without having complementary work done on the rotator cuff in the back, so pinching stuff and causing numbness. Her prescription?

… Buy more workout equipment and do band exercises for my cuff!

I love my Dr. !  I went out and bought 2 bands and began my cuff work yesterday. I felt so silly buying the little walmart rubber tubes, but they felt like they were working.

Anyway, there we go. Thursday is squat and dl, Friday is speed and reps.

Birthday Challenge: “Just one” syndrome

Monday, January 26th, 2009

holbee

"Daddy! I want to make a bake sale in our house!" says the 3 year old thanks to Handy Manny’s latest adventure.

"Oh? What do we want to have at the bake sale?" asks the silly dad.

"Cupcakes, birthday cake, chocolate chip cookies, donuts, and EVERYTHING!" replies the reasonably child.

"Mmmm. Those sound good buddy. Where should we get those from?" says the funny father.

"From the kitchen you silly goose-y!" says the sage-like-son with a tone of amusement.

"…"

"Daddy?"

"Our kitchen?"

"Yeah, you silly daddy!"

"… dang. Err…uhhh…ok buddy. have fun!" (drinks another cup of coffee and fights his body’s sudden urge to sprint into the kitchen and find a fork).

I hadn’t realized it, but Ian is right. We’ve had all of those things in our kitchen within the last THREE DAYS!!!!! Between friends b-days, congregational dinners, and the kids normal snacks, we’ve got a veritable baby bake sale in our home. And since I’ve been less than strict, I’ve had "just one" of each of them. Just one cupcake. Just one slice of cake. Just one piece of blueberry pie. Just one chocolate chip cookie. Just one donut. Just one…

…Dang. I hadn’t realized it. I hadn’t been watching it. I’d just been sucked back into the "Just one" syndrome that got me fat in the first place.

Today’s moral of the story: If you’re going to have "just one", keep count. Those "ones" add up to bigger numbers.

Current: 21.5% & 219 lbs. Physical and dentist today as well. Wish me luck.

Birthday Challenge: 27 Days left

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

holbee

Today was bench ME and accessory work. Getting close to a new pr again. Weight is hovering around 218, but I’ve yet to check bf% this week. My belt is still on the smallest notch, my sleeves are shrinking, and my strength is going up, so something is working.

Brad, the new guy from yesterday…no show today. lol. Kyle said that he stayed home from school today due to DOMS. We’ll see come Thursday.

Birthday Challenge: 28 days left

Monday, January 19th, 2009

holbee

HA! Looks like I can’t count! Apparently there’s only 28 days left till my goal date.

I did some sled work yesterday, in the truest sense of the word. We have 20 or so inches of powder, so the family and I went to play in it. We have this old wooden sleigh that’s just the perfect size for Evan. So, in he goes, dad steps into the "harness" and we ride around the yard for 20 minutes or so. After he and Kim went back inside Ian and I finished building a couple of snow forts and then went inside ourselves.

Today is a prayer march for MLK Jr.; then squats and DL’s Max effort day with accessory work.

Birthday Challenge: 36 days left

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

holbee

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrr. -14 degrees here at the moment. Fortunately, everything for today has been cancelled already except for worship tonight (Think we’ll be fine). Might have a new kid on the powerlifting team. We’ll see. My lifting partner said that a high schooler named "Brad" that he knows very well and works out with on occassion wants to join. He’s supposedly comming to worship tonight too (Price of working out/training: attend worship for that week or $50 an hour cash before the session. )

I’ve been getting a numbness in my hands and sometimes my arms for the past week or three. I have an appointment to see my Dr. on the 26th. I think I have some nerve pinched in my shoulder area (seems to be what triggers it) but we’ll see. No loss of strength or movement as of yet though.

Birthday Challenge: 37 days left

Friday, January 16th, 2009

holbee

Update on the challenge: dang.

I’ve picked up the pastoral duties of another church in the past week/10 days and have been fairly busy. I’ve kept up with all of my workouts and diet, but I’ve been unable to write in my blog. The long and the short of it is that my strength is going up up up, but so is my weight AND my bf%. I was hoping that I could be more friendly with the good carbs this time around, but I guess that I’m too insulin sensitive. So, I just had some oats :) Guess it’s time to cut out the carbs after breakfast except for workout time.

Birthday challenge day 7: ice nepa

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

holbee

Today and yesterday our area was hit with about 2-3 inches of nice, solid, ice. So, rather than my usual basement cardio, I had the pleasure of fresh air and a sense of accomplishment from breaking and hauling ice. I got our driveway and sidewalk twice, infront of our property line once, and around the church (2.5 hours solid!) this morning.

Feels good.

Birthday challenge day 6: rule of 10 and 90

Tuesday, January 6th, 2009

holbee

I was reading on one of my bb friends sites about the "rule" of 10 and 90, and it has stuck with me. It said something to the effect of:

"Fat loss is 10% gym and 90% kitchen"

…but mt wife won’t let me put the elliptical next to the toaster.

>*sigh*<

She just doesn’t understand. lol

yesterday was box squats and rack pulls w/ 3 singles on the dl afterwards. managed 475. Nepa consisted of cleaning house/scrubbing the kitchen floor. I really didn’t do a great job of either cardio or cleaning to be honest, but it was movement. I’ll have to finish up the floor today at some point (probably after supper and the boy’s bath time).

41 days to go!
